    Abstract
Friction stir processing (FSP) is a solid state route with a capacity of preparing fine grained nanocomposites from metal sheets. In this work, we employed this process to finely distribute TiO2 nanoparticles throughout an Al-Mg alloy, aiming to enhance mechanical properties. Titanium dioxide particles (30 nm) were preplaced into grooves machined in the middle of the aluminium alloy sheet and multipass FSP was afforded. This process refined the grain structure of the aluminium alloy, distributed the hard nanoparticles in the matrix and promoted solid state chemical reactions at the interfaces of the metal/ceramic particles. Detailed optical and electron microscopic studies showed that the...

The effect of protein corona on doxorubicin release from the magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol coating

    , Article Journal of Nanoparticle Research ; Volume 17, Issue 4 , April , 2015 ; 13880764 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Tehrani, Z. M ; Mahmoudi, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present work, biocompatible superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated by mesoporous silica were used as drug nanocarriers for doxorubicin (Dox; an anticancer drug) delivery. In biological media, the interaction of protein corona layer with the surface of nanoparticles is inevitable. For this reason, we studied the effect of protein corona on drug release from magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) in human plasma medium. Besides, we used hydrophilic and biocompatible polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG), to decrease protein corona effects. The results showed the increased Dox release from PEGylated MMSNs compared with bare MMSNs. This result indicated that the coating...

    Abstract
A heterogeneous and recyclable catalyst with a high loading of silver nanoparticles was synthesized via the silver nanoparticles being supported onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticles coated with poly(4-vinylpyridine). The synthesized catalyst was used in the dehydrogenation of alcohols to corresponding carbonyl compounds. A broad diversity of alcohols was converted into their corresponding carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. The catalyst was easily recovered by applying an external magnetic field and reused for seven reaction cycles without considerable loss of activity. The catalyst was fully characterized using various techniques. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

    Abstract
We report a novel strategy for the synthesis of magnetic nanocomposite for highly efficient catalysis. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) chains were grafted to the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) through surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Then, the oxirane rings in the PGMA chains were opened with 2,6-diamino pyridine (DAP) molecules as ligands to prepare the solid support. Finally, this magnetic nanocomposite was used for the immobilization of gold nanoparticles. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, gel permeation...

Review - Towards the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) electrochemical sensing platforms

    , Article Journal of the Electrochemical Society ; Volume 167, Issue 12 , 2020 Angizi, S ; Khalaj, M ; Alem, S. A. A ; Pakdel, A ; Willander, M ; Hatamie, A ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Electrochemical sensing performance of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) has traditionally been suppressed by their intrinsic electrical insulation and deficient electron transportation mechanism. However, the excellent electrocatalytic activity, high specific surface area, N- and B-active edges, structural defects, adjustable band gap through interaction with other nanomaterials, and chemical functionalization, makes 2D h-BN ideal for many sensing applications. Therefore, finding a pathway to modulate the electronic properties of 2D h-BN while the intrinsic characteristics are well preserved, will evolve a new generation of highly sensitive and selective electrochemical...

    Abstract
Although numerous molecular methods for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) detection have been exploited, most of hem are laborious, time consuming and costly. Recently, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted attention in the field of colourimetric bioanalysis, because AuNP aggregation can be tracked with the naked eye as well as ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) peak analysis. Here, based on a non-cross linking platform, a colourimetric-based method was used to evaluate the capability of thiolated oligo-AuNPs (Au nanoprobes) to distinguish between normal individuals, carriers and those with SMA. In this platform, removal of the repulsive force of the Au nanoprobes using high salt concentration...

    Abstract
Microbial contamination poses a serious threat to human health. The evaluation of alternative systems and their reliability for the treatment of water is essential. In this work, a new method for the deposit of more silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the external surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is presented. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesised by chemical co-precipitation and were modified in two stages using 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane and grafting allyl glycidyl ether and N, N-dimethylacrylamide. Then, AgNPs were loaded onto the modified Fe3O4 to be used for water disinfection. The resulting nanoparticles were characterised by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction,...

Aggregates of plasmonic nanoparticles for broadband light trapping in dye-sensitized solar cells

    , Article Journal of Optics (United Kingdom) ; Volume 18, Issue 1 , November , 2015 ; 20408978 (ISSN) Sharifi, N ; Dabirian, A ; Danaei, D ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have not been effective in improving the overall performance of the cells with micrometer-thick absorbing layers mainly due to the parasitic optical dissipation in the metal. Here, using both experiment and theory, we demonstrate that aggregates of metallic NPs enhance the light absorption of dye-sensitized solar cells of a few micrometer-thick light absorbing layers. The composite electrode containing the optimal concentration of 5 wt% Au@SiO2 aggregates shows the enhancement of 80% and 52% in external quantum efficiency and photocurrent density, respectively. The superior performance of the aggregates relative to NP is attributed to their larger scattering...

    Abstract
The study of the surface free energy (SFE) of metal at nanoscale is far from perfection and the obtained results are approach dependent. Despite the extensive investigations, there is still a lack of a complete model for the surface energy of metallic nanoparticles which could be able to consider effects of the particle size and shape. Most studies emphasize the size dependence of the melting characteristics, rather than considering the lattice deformation and the surface energy of nanoclusters. This research aimed at computation of SFE of copper nanoclusters depending on temperature over a wide range of sizes, containing 147 to 10179 atoms. We employed molecular dynamics simulation by using...

    Abstract
In the present work, accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was used as an effective method for manufacturing nanoparticle/Al composite filler metals of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. After welding, the distribution of ceramic nanoparticles and mechanical properties of welds were investigated. By applying ARB, ceramic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the composite filler metals. Consequently, the welds produced by these filler metals had a uniform dispersion of ceramic nanoparticles in their compositions. The test results showed that the yield strength of welds was greatly increased when using the nanoparticle/Al composite filler metals. The improvement in the yield strength was...

    Abstract
In the present research, iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through the hydrothermal method, and the influence of processing parameters such as pH of the initial coprecipitation reaction, time and temperature of hydrothermal treatment was studied. The magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were coated with a negatively charged, thin layer of silica. The product is then coated with a layer of mesoporous silica. As a result of the electrostatic attraction between the cationic CTAB and the primary silica coating, the formation of mesoporous silica would be mainly localized on the surface of nanoparticles. Calcination was performed in an argon atmosphere tube furnace at 550 °C, through which...

    Abstract
Nanoparticles of high-Z elements exhibit stronger photoelectric effects than soft tissues under gamma irradiation. Hence, they can be used as effective radiosensitizers for increasing the efficiency of current radiotherapy. In this work, superparamagnetic zinc ferrite spinel (ZnFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction method and used as radiosensitizers in cancer therapy. The magnetic nanoparticles showed fast separation from solutions (e.g., ~ 1 min for 2 mg mL- 1 of the nanoparticles in ethanol) by applying an external magnetic field (~ 1 T). The ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were applied in an in vitro radiotherapy of lymph node carcinoma of prostate cells (as high...
