Templated growth of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles by temperature programming in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol)

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 518, Issue 15 , 2010 , Pages 4281-4289 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, M ; Simchi, A ; Imani, M ; Stroeve, P ; Sohrabi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanostructures with different morphologies including uniform nanoparticles, magnetic beads and nanorods were synthesized via a co-precipitation method. The synthesis process was performed at various temperatures in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at different concentrations. It is shown that small amounts of PVA act as a template in hot water (70 °C), leading to the oriented growth of Fe3O4 nanorods, which was confirmed by selected area electron diffraction. Individually coated magnetite nanoparticles and magnetic beads were formed at a relatively lower temperature of 30 °C in the folded polymer molecules due to the thermo-physical properties of PVA. When a moderate...

Lipid membranes with transmembrane proteins in shear flow

    , Article Journal of Chemical Physics ; Volume 132, Issue 2 , 2010 ; 00219606 (ISSN) Khoshnood, A ; Noguchi, H ; Gompper, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effects of embedded proteins on the dynamical properties of lipid bilayer membranes are studied in shear flow. Coarse-grained molecular simulations are employed, in which lipids are modeled as short polymers consisting of hydrophilic head groups and hydrophobic tail monomers; similarly, transmembrane proteins are modeled as connected hydrophobic double- or triple-chain molecules with hydrophilic groups at both ends. In thermal equilibrium, rigid proteinlike molecules aggregate in a membrane of flexible lipids, while flexible proteins do not aggregate. In shear flow parallel to the membrane, the monolayers of lipid bilayer slide over each other. The presence of transmembrane proteins...

    Abstract
This study reports the importance of physicochemical characteristics of the core-shell structured polymer-coated Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 nanocomposite particles for designing the biocatalysts used for transesterification of soybean oil. To demonstrate this issue, two different types of polymer molecules such as polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) each with two different molecular weights are employed. The highest fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) synthesis yield values are achieved by the lipases immobilized onto the low- and high-molecular-weight PEI-coated particles as compared to those of the low- and high-molecular-weight PAA-coated particles (i.e., ∼64.8% and ∼73.1% versus...

    Abstract
Comprehensive structural/molecular simulations have been undertaken to study the poly(benzimidazoles) (PBI) membrane combined with four different nano-oxide materials (ZnO, Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2) for purification and production of hydrogen from natural gases. Composite membranes were built with different amounts of nano-oxide materials to investigate the influence of nano-oxide content on the PBI membrane performance. Several structural characterizations such as FFV, WAXD and also a thermal one (glass transition temperature) were done to study the structural properties of all simulated membrane cells. Moreover, MSD and adsorption isotherms tasks were used to estimate the diffusivity and...

Electrokinetic properties of asphaltene colloidal particles: determining the electric charge using micro electrophoresis technique

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 541 , 2018 , Pages 68-77 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Azari, V ; Abolghasemi, E ; Hosseini, A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Dehghani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
In this work, the electrokinetic properties of asphaltene particles have been investigated. Micro-electrophoresis method by applying DC electric field, was utilized to different mixtures containing asphaltene to determine its electric charge. It was observed that in the case of using n-heptane and its mixture with toluene (heptol), the asphaltene particles were showed to be positively charged however for toluene itself, they expressed no tendency toward the electrodes. While it is expected that larger asphaltene aggregates carry higher electric charge, the results contradictorily showed that they are mainly governed by gravity rather than electro-static force and that “aggregation” reduces...

    Abstract
Wettability alteration analysis form gas-repellent to gas-wet with the aid of chemical agents has been subjected of numerous studies. However, fundamental understanding of the effect of surface tension of liquid on repellency strength, the change in the intermolecular forces due to the adsorption of nanoparticles onto the rock surfaces, and exposure of treated rock in brine are not well discussed in the available literature. In this study, X-ray diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were applied to characterize the treated and fresh samples. Dynamic and static contact angle measurements were then combined with six methods...

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces ; Volume 103 , March , 2013 , Pages 652-657 ; 09277765 (ISSN) Hosseini, F ; Panahifar, A ; Adeli, M ; Amiri, H ; Lascialfari, A ; Orsini, F ; Doschak, M. R ; Mahmoudi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) were synthesized and coated with pseudopolyrotaxanes (PPRs) and proposed as a novel hybrid nanostructure for medical imaging and drug delivery. PPRs were prepared by addition of α-cyclodextrin rings to functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain with hydrophobic triazine end-groups. Non-covalent interactions between SPIONs and PPRs led to the assembly of SPIONs@PRs hybrid nanomaterials. Measurements of the 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times T1 and T2 allowed us to determine the NMR dispersion profiles. Comparison between our SPIONs@PRs hybrid nano-compound and the commercial SPION compound, Endorem®, showed a higher...

A colorimetric sensor array for detection and discrimination of biothiols based on aggregation of gold nanoparticles

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 882 , July , 2015 , Pages 58-67 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Ghasemi, F ; Hormozi-Nezhad, M.R ; Mahmoudi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
Developments of sensitive, rapid, and cheap systems for identification of a wide range of biomolecules have been recognized as a critical need in the biology field. Here, we introduce a simple colorimetric sensor array for detection of biological thiols, based on aggregation of three types of surface engineered gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The low-molecular-weight biological thiols show high affinity to the surface of AuNPs; this causes replacement of AuNPs' shells with thiol containing target molecules leading to the aggregation of the AuNPs through intermolecular electrostatic interaction or hydrogen-bonding. As a result of the predetermined aggregation, color and UV-vis spectra of AuNPs...

Poly(citric acid)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers-new biocompatible hybrid materials for nanomedicine

    , Article Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology, and Medicine ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , Aug , 2010 , Pages 556-562 ; 15499634 (ISSN) Tavakoli Naeini, A ; Adeli, M ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Linear-dendritic ABA triblock copolymers containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as B block and hyperbranched poly(citric acid) (PCA) as A blocks were synthesized through polycondensation. The molecular self-assembly of synthesized PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in water led to formation of nanoparticles and fibers in different sizes and shapes depending on the time and size of PCA blocks. Ten days after dissolving PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in water, the size of fibers had reached several millimeters. Mixing a water solution of fluorescein as a small guest molecule and PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers led to the encapsulation of fluorescein by products of molecular self-assembly. To investigate their potential...

Nanocapsules based on carbon nanotubes-graft-polyglycerol hybrid materials

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 20, Issue 48 , 2009 ; 09574484 (ISSN) Adeli, M ; Mirab, N ; Zabihi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work the effect of a conjugated macromolecule on the conformation of CNT was studied. Typically polyglycerol (PG) was covalently grafted onto the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and MWCNT-graft-PG (MWCNT- g-PG) hybrid materials were obtained. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments showed an average diameter around 100nm for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials in water. The difference between this size and the expected size for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials (the length of pristine MWCNTs was several micrometers) was assigned to the effect of the grafted PG on the conformation of MWCNT in the solution state. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) evaluations showed a change...

    Abstract
A gas-phase heterogeneous kinetics is described over perovskite with formula La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (LSCF) for the oxidative coupling of methane under differential conversion conditions in a microcatalytic fixed-bed reactor. The ethane (C2H6) and carbon oxides (COX) formation and methane conversion rates were obtained as a function of methane and oxygen partial pressure under experimental conditions of: 0.20 < PC H4 < 0.82 atm, 0.04 < PO2 < 0.15 atm, and 1073 < T < 1173 K. The different kinetic models were examined and two Eley-Rideal mechanisms (a and b) were successfully performed to fit the experimental data into the theoretical relations from which two mechanisms having a first step of...

    Abstract
We have investigated hydrogen sensing properties of electrodeposited Pd clusters on macroporous silicon substrates. Porous layer was prepared by electrochemical etching of p-type silicon (100) wafer in organic electrolyte DMF (dimethylformamide) diluted by HF (%95 Vol. %). The deposition of Pd was carried out by linear voltammetry (LV) technique. This technique was taken for reduction of palladium ions in the potential range from 0.4 V to -1 V vs. SCE, at the scan rate of 20 mV s-1. Some samples were annealed at 300°C for an hour in air to study the effect of heat treatment on their gas sensitivity. Surface structural and chemical properties of the samples were characterised using Scanning...

    Abstract
This review covers the most recent developments of inorganic and organic-inorganic composite coatings for orthopedic implants, providing the interface with living tissue and with potential for drug delivery to combat infections. Conventional systemic delivery of drugs is an inefficient procedure that may cause toxicity and may require a patient's hospitalization for monitoring. Local delivery of antibiotics and other bioactive molecules maximizes their effect where they are required, reduces potential systemic toxicity and increases timeliness and cost efficiency. In addition, local delivery has broad applications in combating infection-related diseases. Polymeric coatings may present some...

Development of nanocrystalline TiO2-Er2O3 and TiO2-Ta2O5 thin film gas sensors: Controlling the physical and sensing properties

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 141, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 76-84 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Mohammadi, M. R ; Fray, D. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A systematic comparison of single and binary metal oxide TiO2, TiO2-Er2O3 and TiO2-Ta2O5 thin film gas sensors with nanocrystalline and mesoporous microstructure, prepared by sol-gel route, was conducted. The gas sensitivity was increased by secondary phase introduction into TiO2 film via two mechanisms, firstly due to the inhibition of anatase-to-rutile transformation, since the anatase phase accommodates larger amounts of adsorbed oxygen, and secondly due to the retardation of grain growth, since the higher surface area provides more active sites for gas molecule adsorption. The binary metal oxide gas sensors exhibited a remarkable response towards low concentrations of CO and NO2 gases at...

    Abstract
In the present study, the tri-layer nanofibers were synthesized via triaxial electrospinning process to control the sustained delivery of Doxorubicin (DOX), Paclitaxel (PTX) and 5- fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drugs from nanofibers. The 5-FU molecules were incorporated into the core solution (chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA)) to fabricate the CS/PVA/5-FU inner layer of nanofibers. The intermediate layer was prepared from poly(lactic acid)/chitosan (PLA/CS) nanofibers. The DOX and PTX molecules were initially loaded into the g-C3N4 nanosheets and following were incorporated into the PLA/CS solution to fabricate the outer layer of nanofibers. The synthesized nanosheets and nanofibers were...

    Abstract
Porphyrins are organic compounds that continue to attract much theoretical interest, and have been called the “pigments of life”. They have a wide role in photodynamic and sonodynamic therapy, along with uses in magnetic resonance, fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging. There is a vast range of porphyrins that have been isolated or designed, but few of them have real clinical applications. Due to the hydrophobic properties of porphyrins, and their tendency to aggregate by stacking of the planar molecules they are difficult to work with in aqueous media. Therefore encapsulating them in nanoparticles (NPs) or attachment to various delivery vehicles have been used to improve delivery...

    Abstract
With the passage of time and more advanced societies, there is a greater emergence and incidence of disease and necessity for improved treatments. In this respect, nowadays, aptamers, with their better efficiency at diagnosing and treating diseases than antibodies, are at the center of attention. Here, in this review, we first investigate aptamer function in various fields (such as the detection and remedy of pathogens, modification of nanoparticles, antibiotic delivery and gene delivery). Then, we present aptamer-conjugated nanocomplexes as the main and efficient factor in gene delivery. Finally, we focus on the targeted co-delivery of genes and drugs by nanocomplexes, as a new exciting...
