Pareto-based robust optimization of water-flooding using multiple realizations

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 132 , 2015 , Pages 18-27 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Yasari, E ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
Robust optimization (RO) approach is inherently a multi-objective paradigm. The proposed multi-objective optimization formulation would attempt to find the optimum - yet robust - water injection policies. Two multi-objective, Pareto-based robust optimization scenarios have been investigated to encounter the permeability uncertainties. These multi-objective RO scenarios have been done based on a small representative set of realizations but they have introduced optimum points that could be reliable for the original set of realizations either. In both scenarios, the desired objective functions are expected value and variance of Net Present Value (NPV). The underlying RO scenarios have been done...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 63, Issue 8 , 2015 , Pages 2948-2958 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Ranjbar Zefreh, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, we present an analytical approach in obtaining the probability density function (pdf) of the random decision variable Y, which is formed at the output of the power-cubic all-optical nonlinear preprocessor followed by the photodetector, with applications in ultrafast optical time-division multiplexing and optical code-division multiple-access systems. Our approach can be used to accurately evaluate the performance of ultrafast pulse detection in the presence of Gaussian noise. Through rigorous Monte Carlo simulation, the accuracy of the widely used Gaussian approximation of decision variable Y is refuted. However, in this paper, we show that the so-called log-Pearson type-3...

Efficiency enhancement of optimized Latin hypercube sampling strategies: Application to Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis and meta-modeling

    , Article Advances in Water Resources ; Volume 76 , 2015 , Pages 127-139 ; 03091708 (ISSN) Rajabi, M. M ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Janssen, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The majority of literature regarding optimized Latin hypercube sampling (OLHS) is devoted to increasing the efficiency of these sampling strategies through the development of new algorithms based on the combination of innovative space-filling criteria and specialized optimization schemes. However, little attention has been given to the impact of the initial design that is fed into the optimization algorithm, on the efficiency of OLHS strategies. Previous studies, as well as codes developed for OLHS, have relied on one of the following two approaches for the selection of the initial design in OLHS: (1) the use of random points in the hypercube intervals (random LHS), and (2) the use of...

    Abstract
An algorithm for determining optimal reserve capacity in a power market is presented in this paper. Optimization process in the proposed algorithm is based on the cost-benefit trade off. Market clearance is executed with consideration of uncertainties of power system components in an aggregated environment. It is assumed that both generating units and interruptible loads participate in the reserve market. In addition, customers' reliability requirements are considered as constraints for decision making process of ISO. The rendered method considers random outages of generating units and transmission lines and determined outage of interruptible loads and employs Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS)...

    Abstract
In this paper, we design a dimming compatible visible light communication (VLC) system with asynchronous and optimum indoor positioning method in a standard office room in combination with asynchronous and optimum indoor positioning method according to illumination standards under channel constraints. We use overlapping pulse position modulation (OPPM) to support dimming control by changing the code weights. The system parameters such as a valid interval for dimming together with an upper bound for bit rate according to the channel delay spread are investigated. Moreover, considering the dispersive VLC channel and using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, a method is proposed to determine the...

    , Article Optimization Letters ; Volume 3, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 199-210 ; 18624472 (ISSN) Azaron, A ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper is concerned with the study of the constant due-date assignment policy in a multistage assembly system. The multistage assembly system is modeled as an open queueing network. It is assumed that the product order arrives according to a Poisson process. In each service station, there is either one or infinite machine with exponentially distributed processing time. The transport times between every pair of service stations are independent random variables with generalized Erlang distributions. It is assumed that each product has a penalty cost that is some linear function of its due-date and its actual completion time. The due date is found by adding a constant to the time that the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present an in depth analysis and discussions on the behavior and performance of using either thin or thick second harmonic generation (SHG) crystals prior to photodetector in ultrahigh-speed optically amplified digital lightwave communication systems. Our study begins by considering a conventional low-speed optically amplified lightwave receiver and study its performance in ultrahigh-speed regime and show its substantially degraded behavior, indicating the need to use advance optical nonlinear elements such as SHG prior to photodetection. In studying SHG effects, we begin by discussing the mathematical models of thin and thick SHG crystals in the context of statistical...

    Abstract
In order to determine the activity of C137s in soil resulting from nuclear accidents or fallouts, the best choice is to use HPGe detectors due to their best energy resolutions. In this regard, in order to enhance the detection efficiency, the Marinelli beakers have been used to increase the radiation interaction with the sensitive volume of the detector. In previous works, to optimize the dimension of Marinelli beakers, the assumption was that the emission rate of the source is homogeneous in beaker volume. In the present study, to investigate the effect of the inhomogeneous emission rate of the source on the optimum dimensions of the beaker, in a simple case, the beaker was divided into two...

    Abstract
Oil spills are serious environmental issues that potentially can cause adverse effects on marine ecosystems. In some marine areas, like the Baltic Sea, there is a large number of wrecks from the first half of the 20th century, and recent monitoring and field work have revealed release of oil from some of these wrecks. The risk posed by a wreck is governed by its condition, hazardous substances contained in the wreck and the state of the surrounding environment. Therefore, there is a need for a common standard method for estimating the risks associated with different wrecks. In this work a state-of-the-art model is presented for spatial and stochastic risk assessment of oil spills from...
