    Abstract
Aximum coverage location problem is considered in this study. Extension of this problem is investigated for situations that coverage areas are elliptical; these ellipses can locate anywhere on the plane with any angle. Mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) is applied for formulation. This problem can be used in many practical situations such as locating wireless transmitter towers. A heuristic algorithm named MCLPEA for solving this problem was designed. This algorithm can produce very good results in efficient running time. Abstract
This paper deals with the question of existence of periodic solutions of nonautonomous predator-prey dynamical systems with Beddington-DeAngelis functional response. We explore the periodicity of this system on time scales. New sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of periodic solutions. These conditions extend previous results presented in [M. Passivity enforcement using an infeasible-interior-point primal-dual method

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 23, Issue 3 , August , 2008 , Pages 966-974 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Porkar, B ; Vakilian, M ; Iravani, R ; Shahrtash, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Application of the network equivalent concept for external system representation in electromagnetic transient studies is well known. However, the challenge in application of an equivalent model, approximated by rational functions, is to guarantee passivity of the corresponding model. Therefore, there is a need to enforce passivity of the equivalent model. In this paper, the passivity enforcement problem is first formulated as a quadratic programming (QP) problem, and then solved based on an efficient implementation, using an infeasible-interior-point primal-dual method. An application of this method for passivity enforcement of a six-port admittance model (with large passivity violations)...

    Abstract
The relatively large number of structural elements and the variety of design code requirements complicate the design process of tall buildings. This process is exacerbated when the target is to obtain the seismic code-compliant optimal design with minimum weight. The present paper aims at providing a practical methodology for the optimal design of steel tall building structures considering the constraints imposed by typical building codes. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through the determination of the optimal seismic design for 20-, 40-, and 60-story buildings with a framed tube as well as a tube-in-tube system. Such a design gives rise to a basis for the fair...

Optimizing the multi-product, multi-constraint, bi-objective newsboy problem with discount by a hybrid method of goal programming and genetic algorithm

    , Article Engineering Optimization ; Volume 41, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 437-457 ; 0305215X (ISSN) Taleizadeh, A. A ; Akhavan Niaki, T ; Hoseini, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This article points out the real-world prevalence of the multiple-product, multiple-constraint newsboy problem with two objectivesthe 'newsstand problem'in which there are total and incremental discounts on purchasing prices. The constraints are the warehouse capacity and the batch forms of the order placements. The first objective of this problem is to find the order quantities that maximize expected profit, and the second objective is maximizing the service rate. It is assumed that the holding and shortage costs, modelled by a quadratic function, occur at the end of the period. Moreover, the decision variables are integer. A formulation of the problem is presented and shown to be an...

Optimizing multi-product multi-constraint inventory control systems with stochastic replenishments

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 8, Issue 7 , 2008 , Pages 1228-1234 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Taleizadeh, A. A ; Aryanezhad, M. B ; Akhvan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Multi-periodic inventory control problems are mainly studied employing two assumptions. The first is the continuous review, where depending on the inventory level orders can happen at any time and the other is the periodic review, where orders can only happen at the beginning of each period. In this study, we relax these assumptions and assum that the periodic replenishments are stochastic in nature. Furthermore, we assume that the periods between two replenishments are independent and identically random variables. For the problem at hand, the decision variables are of integer-type and there are two kinds of space and service level constraints for each product. We develop a model of the...

    Abstract
While the usual assumptions in multiperiodic inventory control problems are that the orders are placed either at the beginning of each period (periodic review) or depending on the inventory level they can happen at any time (continuous review), in this paper we assume the periods between two replenishments of several products are identical and independent random variables. For the problem at hand, the order quantities (decision variables) are of integertype and there are two kinds of space and service level constraints for each product. A model of the problem is first developed in which a combination of backorder and emergency orders is considered for the shortages, and the costs are...

Optimizing a multi-vendor multi-retailer vendor managed inventory problem: Two tuned meta-heuristic algorithms

    , Article Knowledge Based Systems ; Volume 50 , September , 2013 , Pages 159-170 ; 09507051 (ISSN) Sadeghi, J ; Mousavi, S. M ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sadeghi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The vendor-managed inventory (VMI) is a common policy in supply chain management (SCM) to reduce bullwhip effects. Although different applications of VMI have been proposed in the literature, the multi-vendor multi-retailer single-warehouse (MV-MR-SW) case has not been investigated yet. This paper develops a constrained MV-MR-SW supply chain, in which both the space and the annual number of orders of the central warehouse are limited. The goal is to find the order quantities along with the number of shipments received by retailers and vendors such that the total inventory cost of the chain is minimized. Since the problem is formulated into an integer nonlinear programming model, the...

Optimizing a multi-item economic order quantity problem with imperfect items, inspection errors, and backorders

    , Article Soft Computing ; Volume 23, Issue 22 , 2019 , Pages 11671-11698 ; 14327643 (ISSN) Khalilpourazari, S ; Pasandideh, S. H. R ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a multi-item economic order quantity model with imperfect items in supply deliveries. The inspection process to classify the items is not perfect and involves two types of error: Type-I and Type-II. To cope with the uncertainty involved in real-world applications and to bring the problem closer to reality, operational constraints are assumed stochastic. The aim is to determine the optimal order and back order sizes of the items in order to achieve maximum total profit. As the proposed mathematical model is a constrained nonlinear programming, three different solution methods including an exact method named the interior-point and two novel meta-heuristics named grey wolf...

Optimizing a location allocation-inventory problem in a two-echelon supply chain network: A modified fruit fly optimization algorithm

    Abstract
In this paper, a design of the supply chain distributer-retailer network for a seasonal multiple-product location allocation-inventory control problem in a planning horizon consisting of multiple periods is modeled. The distance between the distributers and retailers are assumed to be Euclidean and square Euclidean while retailers purchase the products from the distributers under all-unit and incremental quantity discount policies. Furthermore, the products are delivered in packets of known size of items and in case of shortage, a fraction of demand is considered backorder and a fraction lost sale. Besides, the distributers store the manufactured products in their warehouses before...

Optimising multi-item economic production quantity model with trapezoidal fuzzy demand and backordering: Two tuned meta-heuristics

    , Article European Journal of Industrial Engineering ; Volume 10, Issue 2 , 2016 , Pages 170-195 ; 17515254 (ISSN) Sadeghi, J ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Malekian, M. R ; Sadeghi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a multi-item economic production quantity model with fuzzy demand is developed in which shortages are backordered and the warehouse space is limited. While the demand is assumed to be a trapezoidal fuzzy number, the centroid defuzzification method is used to defuzzify fuzzy output functions. The Lagrangian relaxation procedure is first employed to solve the problem. Then, the model is extended to a constrained fuzzy integer nonlinear programming, in order to suit real-world situations. As the extended model cannot be solved in a reasonable time using exact methods, two meta-heuristic algorithms, named the genetic algorithm (GA) and the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) each...

Optimal tracking control of an underactuated container ship based on direct Gauss Pseudospectral Method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 6 , 2014 Ghorbani, M. T ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of optimal tracking control for a container ship is addressed. The multi-input-multi-output nonlinear model of the S175 container ship is well established in the literature and represents a challenging problem for control design, where the design requirement is to follow a commanded maneuver at a desired speed. To satisfy the constraints on the states and the control inputs of the vessel nonlinear dynamics and minimize the heading error, a nonlinear optimal controller is formed. To solve the resulted nonlinear constrained optimal control problem, the Gauss Pseudospectral Method (GPM) is used to transcribe the optimal control problem into a Nonlinear Programming...

    Abstract
In future smart grids, energy storage systems (EESs) and demand response (DR) are expected to have an important role in balancing load changes arising from life-style of consumers and varying output of some renewable energy resources. However, activating DR and installing ESSs need huge investment forcing system owner to justify their effectiveness prior to any implementation. This paper presents a model to find the optimal capacity of EESs in distribution systems with demand responding to electricity price changes. The model aims at maximizing system owner profit by lessening total electricity provision costs. The model is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem. Due to...

    Abstract
In future smart grids, energy storage systems (EESs) are expected to play an indispensable role in balancing continuous load changes arising from customers' life-style as well as varying output of intermittent energy resources. This, however, needs significant investment that should be justified prior to their implementation. This paper presents a model to find the optimal capacity for ESSs in distribution systems. The model aims at maximizing system owner profit by reducing total electricity procurement costs. The model is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem. Due to the complexity and large size of the problem, a decouplebased method is proposed wherein optimal...

Optimal riser design in sand casting process by topology optimization with SIMP method I: poisson approximation of nonlinear heat transfer equation

    , Article Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization ; Volume 36, Issue 2 , 25 January , 2008 , Pages 193-202 ; 1615147X (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The optimal design of a casting feeding system is considered. The problem is formulated as the volume constrained topology optimization and is solved with the finite element analysis, explicit design sensitivity, and numerical optimization. In contrast to the traditional topology optimization where the objective function is defined on the design space, in the presented method, the design space is a subset of the complement of the objective function space. To accelerate optimization procedure, the nonlinear unsteady heat transfer equation is approximated with a Poisson-like equation. The feasibility of the presented method is supported with illustrative examples. © 2007 Springer-Verlag

    Abstract
In this letter, we study a receiver architecture technique for joint resource allocation in a downlink (DL) multi-user multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). In this framework, the subcarrier set is partitioned into two groups that are assigned to perform information decoding (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) at the receiver side based on the optimization problem. This letter seeks to maximize energy harvesting while meeting a minimum data-rate requirement for each user. The underlying optimization problem is mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP). To that end, we employ the monotonic optimization...

Optimal power flow problem considering multiple-fuel options and disjoint operating zones: A solver-friendly MINLP model

    Abstract
This paper proposes a solver-friendly model for disjoint, non-smooth, and nonconvex optimal power flow (OPF) problems. The conventional OPF problem is considered as a nonconvex and highly nonlinear problem for which finding a high-quality solution is a big challenge. However, considering practical logic-based constraints, namely multiple-fuel options (MFOs) and prohibited operating zones (POZs), jointly with the non-smooth terms such as valve point effect (VPE) results in even more difficulties in finding a near-optimal solution. In complex problems, the nonlinearity itself is not a big issue in finding the optimal solution, but the nonconvexity does matter and considering MFO, POZ, and VPE...

    Abstract
Utilization of Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFCs) can be more beneficial in the restructured power systems due to their capabilities in increasing the transmission line capacities as well as shunt reactive compensation. So, these devices should be installed such that the most benefit can be gained. In this paper, the problem of optimal placement of UPFCs is solved using Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) method. Hence, the problem is completely formulated based on this method and is solved using available commercial solvers. The salient feature of this method is having potential to simultaneously determine the optimal location of multi UPFCs. Also, since a full AC Optimal Power...

    2008
    Abstract
Passive control of vibration of beams subjected to moving loads is studied in which, an optimal tuned mass damper (TMD) system is utilized to suppress the undesirable beam vibration. Timoshenko beam theory is applied to the beam model having three types of boundary conditions, namely, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and the clamped-clamped ends, and the governing equations of motion are solved using the Galerkin method. For every set of boundary conditions, a minimax problem is solved using the sequential quadratic programming method and the optimum values of the frequency and damping ratios for the TMD system are obtained. To show the effectiveness of the designed TMD system, simulations of...
