Compare numerical modeling and improved understanding of dynamic sessile drop contact angle analysis in Liquid-Solid-Gas system

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 184 , 2020 Azadi Tabar, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Dehghan Monfared, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Dynamic contact angle measurement; as a standard method for surface wettability analysis, is usually conducted through the analysis of sessile drops formed following the low rate injection of fluid from beneath through a drilled hole via an injection needle. However, understanding/characterizing the changes of drop contact angle from the point where the flat solid surface begins is not well discussed yet. Moreover, during the evaluation of size-dependent behavior of contact angle of millimeter-scale drops, the effect of the drilled hole is ignored. In this regard, in the current study, the experimental and thermodynamic characterizations of the sessile drop advancing contact angle...

A rigorous algebraic-analytical method for pore network extraction from micro-tomography images

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 590 , 2020 Barzegar, F ; Masihi, M ; Azadi Tabar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Static and dynamic properties of porous media are highly dependent on its internal geometry. CT scan images are generally used to characterize porous media geometry. Direct simulation of fluid flow on CT scan images is possible but considerably time-consuming. In this study, a new method was developed for extracting a simplified representation known as “pore network model” by utilizing a rigorous algebraic-analytical method. By using a moving frame in the 3D matrix of the CT scan image and stepwise identifying-removing of image components, running time for a 4003 voxels sample in a typical computer system decreased to less than 350 s. The identification of throats was based on a new...

Numerical and experimental investigation on a BRB confined with partially carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 223 , 2020 Bashiri, M ; Toufigh, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have been spread widely, especially in high seismic hazard zones due to their excellent energy absorption capacity. BRBs are composed of a main load-carrying steel core restrained with other elements mostly made of concrete and steel casing to preserve it from buckling. Although BRBs provide excellent cyclic behavior, a problem is with their heaviness, which leads to difficulties such as installation and transportation. This study presents a numerical and experimental investigation on a BRB with a new proposed restraining system composed of concrete panels confined with partially carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips to reduce the weight of the...

A comparison of different geometrical elements to model fluid wicking in paper-based microfluidic devices

    , Article AIChE Journal ; Volume 66, Issue 1 , 2020 Boodaghi, M ; Shamloo, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Inc  2020
    Abstract
Recently, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have outstripped polymeric microfluidic devices in the ease of fabrication and simplicity. Surface tension-based fluid motion in the paper's porous structure has made the paper a suitable substrate for multiple biological assays by directing fluid into multiple assay zones. The widespread assumption in most works for modeling wicking in a paper is that the paper is a combination of capillaries with the same diameter equal to the effective pore diameter. Although assuming paper as a bundle of capillaries gives a good insight into pressure force that drives the fluid inside the paper, there are some difficulties using the effective...

Searching for the finance–growth nexus in Libya

    , Article Empirical Economics ; Volume 58, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 567-581 Cevik, S ; Rahmati, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
This paper investigates the causal relationship between financial development and economic growth in Libya during the period 1970–2016, providing new insights from a resource-dependent economy. The empirical results vary with estimation methodology and model specification, but indicate no long-run relationship between financial intermediation and nonhydrocarbon output growth. The OLS estimation shows that financial development has a statistically significant negative effect on real nonhydrocarbon GDP per capita growth. However, both the VAR- and ARDL-based estimations present statistically insignificant results, albeit still attaching a negative coefficient to financial intermediation. It...

Effect of oxygen enrichment in spectral thermal radiation in an unconfined turbulent bluff-body flame

    , Article Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer ; Volume 247 , 2020 Darbandi, M ; Barezban, M. B ; Fatin, A ; Bordbar, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Oxy-fuel combustion is a modern carbon capture and storage (CCS) technique that improves the combustion process and reduces the environmental penalty of many combustion systems. Evidently, the accurate radiative calculation of oxy-fuel combustion is very important to obtain more improved combustion system designs with less environmental drawbacks. In the present study, a small scale unconfined turbulent bluff-body flame is numerically simulated to calculate the gas radiative properties using three different approaches of ignoring radiation, applying a modified version of the weighted sum of gray gases (WSGG) model, and employing the spectral line based weighted sum of gray gases (SLW) model....

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 96 , 2020 Dashtimanesh, A ; Tavakoli, S ; Kohansal, A ; Khosravani, R ; Ghassemzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Stepped planing hulls have the potential to reach high-speeds in the sea. The step on the bottom of these vessels influence the pressure distribution and thus stability of the vessel, especially in transverse plane. Understanding the behavior of these vessels in a non-zero heel condition is fundamental in the early stage design. In the current paper, numerical simulation of the viscous flow field around a heeled one-stepped planing hull is performed to evaluate influences of the asymmetric planing on the performance of the vessel. The numerical model is validated in two steps. At the first step, performance of a heeled stepless planing hull operating in calm water is simulated using the...

Excess sensitivity and borrowing constraints: Evidence from Iranian households

    , Article Economics of Transition and Institutional Change ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 137-160 Einian, M ; Nili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Inc  2020
    Abstract
In contrast to the findings of simple rational expectations permanent income hypothesis models, empirical studies show that income changes can help predict consumption change. This is dubbed as excess sensitivity in the macroeconomic literature. We use Iranian household data to investigate the excess sensitivity using civil servant status as a proxy for borrowing constraints. We observe that the excess sensitivity is different among different panels. Much less excess sensitivity is observed for government employees who have better access to finance due to the structure of the labour market and banking system in Iran. Our proxy variable to divide data, which is the working status of the head...

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; 2020 Erfani, H ; Karimi Malekabadi, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Rostami, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media B.V  2020
    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known as the controlling mechanism of oil recovery in naturally fractured reservoirs. The efficiency of this mechanism is controlled by block-to-block interactions through capillary continuity and/or reinfiltration processes. In this study, at first, several free-fall gravity drainage experiments were conducted on a well-designed three-block apparatus and the role of tilt angle, spacers’ permeability, wettability and effective contact area (representing a different status of the block-to-block interactions between matrix blocks) on the recovery efficiency were investigated. Then, an experimental-based numerical model of free-fall gravity drainage process was developed,...

    Abstract
Greenhouses require energy in order to provide a proper environment for crop production. Utilizing solar energy in solar greenhouses is a sustainable solution to face this problem. In this study, a solar greenhouse concept is considered, and a dynamic thermal model is developed to predict the inside air temperature. The model is integrated into an optimization procedure to find the optimal greenhouse design that has the best thermal performance by adjusting its structural parameters. This optimization procedure provides a tool to find the optimal solar greenhouse design for each climate condition and predict its performance. For instance, for the case study of Tehran (Iran), the optimal...

An investigation into the energy transfer efficiency of a two-pigment photosynthetic system using a macroscopic quantum model

    , Article BioSystems ; Volume 197 , 2020 Ghasemi, F ; Shafiee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ireland Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Despite several different measures of efficiency that are applicable to the photosynthetic systems, a precise degree of efficiency of these systems is not completely determined. Introducing an efficient model for the dynamics of light-harvesting complexes in biological environments is a major purpose in investigating such systems. Here, we investigate the effect of macroscopic quantum behavior of a system of two pigments on the transport phenomena in this system model which interacts with an oscillating environment. We use the second-order perturbation theory to calculate the time-dependent population of excitonic states of a two-dimensional Hamiltonian using a non-master equation approach....

    , Article Earth Sciences Research Journal ; Volume 24, Issue 3 , 2020 , Pages 328-336 Ghassemi, A ; Seyfi, S ; Shahir, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Universidad Nacional de Colombia  2020
    Abstract
In this study, a fully coupled dynamic finite element model was employed for numerical simulation of the response of level to gently sloping saturated sand layers subjected to cyclic loading. This model utilized a critical state two-surface-plasticity constitutive model to simulate the cyclic behavior of sandy soil. Moreover, a recently proposed variable permeability function was implemented in the numerical model to reflect the effects of soil permeability variations during the liquefaction phenomenon. The numerical model was validated by simulating a number of well-documented geotechnical centrifuge tests with different relative density of sand, base acceleration time history, and surface...

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 477 , 2020 Gholizadeh, T ; Vajdi, M ; Rostamzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Despite the fact that humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination systems can be driven by various renewable or waste heat energies, many of the available renewable technologies are expensive in some parts of the globe. Hence, proposing and developing high-efficient mechanical-based HDH units can be an encouraging alternative which is more highlighted in recent investigations. In pursuance of this objective, three innovative mechanical-driven HDH units are simulated and the results are compared with each other. The simulated hybrid desalination system consists of a HDH unit and an ethane ejector expander transcritical refrigeration cycle (ethane-EETRC). The simulated hybrid systems...

A numerical study on utilizing horizontal flat-panel ground heat exchangers in ground-coupled heat pumps

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 147 , March , 2020 , Pages 996-1010 Habibi, M ; Amadeh, A ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Horizontal ground heat exchangers (GHEs) have a lower cost in comparison to vertical ones; however, they require more land area. For the sake of reducing the required land area for horizontal GHEs, flat-panel GHEs have been recently introduced. In this piece of research, a 3-D numerical model has been developed to predict the thermal performance of flat-panel GHEs. In this study, at first, the thermal performance of a flat-panel GHE has been compared with that of linear horizontal ones. The results demonstrate that the flat-panel GHE has a better thermal performance of about 27% in comparison to an arrangement of linear GHEs with a value of 0.5 m for pipe spacing. In the second part of this...

    Abstract
Despite the fact that hydrophobic nanosilica can improve the stability of water/oil emulsion, there exist controversies pertaining to its influence on oil-based drilling fluid rheological behavior and the subsequent formation damage. The present study addresses the above using a surface modified nanosilica, where the particles were functionalized with different silane-based groups to alter their hydrophilicity: 3-glycidoxypropyl-triethoxy silane (GPTS) and combined GPTS and propyl silane (PGPTS). The NPs were characterized through FTIR analysis, particle size, and zeta-potential measurements followed by flow behavior experiments, core-scale mud flow tests, Computed Tomography (CT) scanning...

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 185 , 2020 Harimi, B ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Capillary continuity between adjacent matrix blocks through formation of liquid bridge controls the recovery factor of gravity drainage process in fractured reservoirs. However, stability of liquid bridges as well as related capillary pressure in horizontal rough fractures is not well discussed in the available literature. In this work, new models of rough-walled fracture are developed and the role of roughness size and frequency on formation of liquid bridge and fracture capillary pressure are investigated. The Young-Laplace equation is numerically solved to characterize the liquid bridge formed in the proposed models of rough fractures. Critical fracture aperture for a range of liquid...

Numerical simulation of proppant transport and tip screen-out in hydraulic fracturing with the extended finite element method

, Article International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences ; Volume 128 , 2020 Hosseini, N ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a numerical model is developed based on the X-FEM technique to simulate the proppant transport and tip screen-out in hydraulic fracturing. The governing equations are based on the momentum balance and mass conservation of the fluid. The hydro-mechanical coupling between the fracture and surrounding porous medium is fulfilled through the weak form of the governing equations. The fluid inflow within the fracture is modeled using the one-dimensional mass conservation of the injected slurry and proppant along the fracture, in which the viscosity of the slurry is dependent on the proppant concentration. The transition from the Poiseuille to Darcy flow regime is incorporated into...

Numerical modeling of density-driven solute transport in fractured porous media with the extended finite element method

    , Article Advances in Water Resources ; Volume 136 , 2020 Hosseini, N ; Bajalan, Z ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a numerical model is developed based on the X-FEM technique to simulate the transport of dense solute in a single fluid phase through the fractured porous media. The governing equation is based on the mass conservation law which is applied to the fluid phase and the solute in both matrix and fracture domain. The integral governing equations of the mass exchange between the fracture and the surrounding matrix is derived. The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is applied by employing appropriate enrichment functions to model the fractured porous domain. The superiority of the X-FEM is that the FE mesh is not necessary to be conformed to the fracture geometry, so the regular...

    Emerald Group Publishing Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Purpose: Spiral-wound heat exchangers (SWHEs) are widely used in different industries. In special applications, such as cryogenic (HEs), fluid properties may significantly depend on fluid temperature. This paper aims to present an analytical method for design and rating of SWHEs considering variable fluid properties with consistent shell geometry and single-phase fluid. Design/methodology/approach: To consider variations of fluid properties, the HE is divided into identical segments, and the fluid properties are assumed to be constant in each segment. Validation of the analytical method is accomplished by using three-dimensional numerical simulation with shear stress transport k-ω model, and...
