    , Article International Conference on Communications (ICC2001), Helsinki, 11 June 2000 through 14 June 2000 ; Volume 5 , 2001 , Pages 1476-1480 ; 05361486 (ISSN) Sharif, M ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has a large peak to mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR), which can result in significant signal distortion in presence of nonlinear amplifiers. In this paper, we will show that peak of the continuous envelope of OFDM signal can be bounded by maximum of corresponding oversampled sequence. This fact is then used as the corner stone of our study in two parts. In the first part, statistical analysis is used to find probability upper bound for complementary cumulative distribution function of PMEPR. It is also proven that for large number of subcarriers, only one redundant bit is necessary to limit PMEPR within %10 of its maximum value. In the...

Robust timing and frequency synchronization for OFDM systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 60, Issue 8 , Oct , 2011 , Pages 3646-3656 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Abdzadeh Ziabari, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper deals with timing and frequency synchronization in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A robust multistage scheme that works in the time domain, independent of the preamble structure, is proposed. After coarse-timing estimation, joint timing and integer frequency synchronization is performed. Then, fractional frequency correction is carried out, and finally, fine-timing estimation completes the synchronization process. The new timing estimation method is flexible and can be adjusted according to the degree of channel distortion. Furthermore, frequency synchronization is efficiently accomplished with an estimation range that is as large as the bandwidth of...

PAPR reduction of space-frequency coded OFDM systems using active constellation extension

    , Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 65, Issue 10 , 2011 , Pages 873-878 ; 14348411 (ISSN) Naeiny, M. F ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Active Constellation Extension (ACE) is one of the techniques introduced for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction of OFDM systems. In this technique, the constellation points are extended such that the PAPR is minimized but the minimum distance of the constellation points does not decrease. In this paper, an iterative ACE method is proposed for the PAPR reduction of OFDM systems with spatial diversity of Space Frequency Block Coding (SFBC). The proposed method is such that the PAPR is reduced simultaneously at all antennas, while the spatial encoding relationship still holds. In this method, at each iteration, the antenna with maximum PAPR is selected and the ACE algorithm is...

    Abstract
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the widely used multiplexing techniques in wireless communications and especially cognitive radio networks. One of the key challenges of this technique is its high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal. This paper, introduces a new approach to PAPR reduction of OFDM signals using harmony search algorithm (HSA) based on the partial transmit sequence (PTS) method. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better PAPR reduction performance as an accurate and low complexity approach for OFDM systems

    Abstract
The nonlinear characteristic of an laser diode, LD, impacts on the performance of optical wireless systems using OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). First, the influence of the nonlinear characteristic on bit-error performance is analyzed using a high power LD (LML-808.7B-XX). Next, the paper proposes a pre-distorter to compensate the nonlinearities. Finally, the coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) system is considered and the performance without linearization and after linearization is analyzed via simulations in an AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) environment. It is shown that LD nonlinearity can significantly degrade the performance. However, it is demonstrated that this...

    Abstract
This paper presents an optimum pre-filter for ICA based multi-input multi-output OFDM system. In our former work, we presented a pre-filter solution for multiuser reconstruction in ICA based MIMO-OFDM systems [1,2]. Here, based on the structure of the system and former pre-filter solution, an optimization problem has been designed to give us the optimum pre-filter. The designed problem is based on minimization of the estimation error of ambiguities inherent to ICA in reconstruction of the data after separation. The optimization problem is mathematically solved and a set of optimized coefficients are obtained. Among the obtained set as optimum coefficients, optimum coefficients are acquired...

Selected mapping algorithm for PAPR reduction of space-frequency coded OFDM systems without side information

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 60, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 1211-1216 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Ferdosizadeh Naeiny, M ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Selected mapping (SLM) is a well-known technique for peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this technique, different representations of OFDM symbols are generated by rotation of the original OFDM frame by different phase sequences, and the signal with minimum PAPR is selected and transmitted. To compensate for the effect of the phase rotation at the receiver, it is necessary to transmit the index of the selected phase sequence as side information (SI). In this paper, an SLM technique is introduced for the PAPR reduction of space-frequency-block-coded OFDM systems with Alamouti coding scheme. Additionally, a suboptimum...

Performance and Analytical Discussion on OFDMA-Based Cognitive Radio Networks with Relaying Capabilities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golrezaei-Khuzani, Sakineh (Author) ; Nasiri Kenar, Masoumeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a novel OFDMA-based cognitive cooperative relaying scheme is proposed in which cognitive users not only try not to interfere with primary users but also assist them by relaying their information. Both primary users (PU) and cognitive users (CR) communicate to a common base station (BS). Bit error probability (BEP) of primary users and outage probability of primary users are investigated to evaluate performance of the primary users. In all parts of this thesis, we assume that data of users is not jointly encoded across subcarriers. So, the outage probability and BEP are investigated for each subcarrier independently. In the last part of the thesis, it is assumed that data is...

    Abstract
Clipping and filtering is a well-known technique used at the transmitter side of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems to reduce the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). In this paper, the extension of clipping and filtering to spatially multiplexed OFDM systems will be introduced. In the proposed scheme, the channel coding and clipping operations are performed at the transmitter branches independently. Based on this scheme, a receiver is proposed, which is based on the detection method of Nulling Cancellation (NC). In this method, the layer with the minimum average noise power over all subcarriers is selected and an iterative method is used to compensate for its clipping...

    Abstract
In this paper, we first propose a space-time-frequency (STF) coding method for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMOOFDM) transmission over frequency-selective fading channels and then, based on channel mean feedback model, we develop an adaptive MIMO-OFDM transmitter by applying an adaptive energy and bit loading scheme across OFDM subcarriers. Under the constraints of fixed transmit-energy and prescribed error performance, our objective is to maximize the transmission rate. Simulation results are presented which confirm the performance of our proposed system and show that under certain circumstances, the transmission rate improves considerably as...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new scheme for adaptive subcarrier, bit and power allocation for downlink transmission of multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is presented. An adaptive algorithm is introduced to maximize the total data rate in a frequency selective channel, while satisfying requirements on total transmit power, minimum data rate of each user and desired BER to offer various quality of service (QoS) levels for different users. The performance and complexity of the proposed scheme is also compared with similar methods and other OFDM-based multiple access methods. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm leads to higher performance in comparison with...

    Abstract
In this paper, the impact of both time offsets (TOs) and carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) on the average output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a frequency selective channel is investigated with a novel approach. First, TOs are partitioned into five cases based on how they occur. Then the mathematical models for different cases are derived. Considering CFOs and benefiting from the obtained models, closed-form expression for the SINR in each case is derived. It is proved that, SINR is independent of the observed subcarrier for the given TO and CFO. Besides, it is shown that the performance of the affected system deteriorates rapidly as the number of subcarriers increases. It...

OFDM channel estimation based on adaptive thresholding for sparse signal detection

    , Article European Signal Processing Conference2009 ; 2009 , Pages 1685-1689 ; 22195491 (ISSN) Soltanolkotabi, M ; Amini, A ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Wireless OFDM channels can be approximated by a time varying filter with sparse time domain taps. Recent achievements in sparse signal processing such as compressed sensing have facilitated the use of sparsity in estimation, which improves the performance significantly. The problem of these sparse-based methods is the need for a stable transformation matrix which is not fulfilled in the current transmission setups. To assist the analog filtering at the receiver, the transmitter leaves some of the subcarriers at both edges of the bandwidth unused which results in an ill-conditioned DFT submatrix. To overcome this difficulty we propose Adaptive Thresholding for Sparse Signal Detection (ATSSD)....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pakrooh, Pooria (Author) ; Marvasti, Farokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we investigate the problem of OFDM channel estimation exploiting channel sparsity. Due to the sparse nature of the scattering objects, most of wireless multipath channel have a sparse impulse response. Therefore it is possible to use the methods in the field of sparse signal processing for the purpose of estimating such channels for better accuracy, and efficient spectrum usage.
First of all the problem of OFDM channel estimation using scattered pilots is stated. Then the so-called IMAT methods together with the other sparse signal processing methods are used for the purpose of estimating channel nonzero taps. Furthermore, since efficient use of spectrum in...

Partial Frequency Reuse in Multi-Cell OFDMA Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shaghaghian, Shohreh (Author) ; Golestani, Jamaloddin (Supervisor) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the modern world today, the increasing need for transfering data in high speeds and long distances has encouraged the investors of this area to use more efficient technologies of this field. With regard to the need for extensive and scalable communication networks, reusing the bandwidth in closer distances seems to be inevitable. Hence, finding an optimal way of using resources like bandwidth and power is necessary. In OFDMA-based networks there is no intra-cell interference due to using orthogonal subbands and the most important limiting factor in designing these networks is inter-cell interference. Therefore in this thesis we are gonig to analyase the partial frequency reuse method...

Quantum Key Distribution in Quantum Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bahrani, Sima (Author) ; Salehi, Jawad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the rapid development of communication technology, the importance of information security is growing daily. Data Encryption, as one of the most important tools of secure communication, has attracted a lot of attention. Most conventional cryptography methods are based on computational complexity assumptions. Hence, they are threatened by computational power enhancements. One of the most important approaches of cryptography that does not have this drawback is quantum cryptography. The unconditional security of this method has been proved by laws of quantum mechanics. One application of quantum cryptography is quantum key distribution that enables secret key exchange between two users. The...
