A new Approach in Reliability Based Robust Optimization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sharafi, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A mechanical system inherently affected by the conditions, factors and parameters of uncertainty. Without including the uncertainty effects in the optimal design procedure, the mechanical system will not be reliable. To include uncertainty effects in an optimum design, there are two different approaches; the robust design optimization and the reliability based design optimization. In robust design optimization process, the main aim is to enhance the system performance by minimizing the variations. In reliability based design optimization process, the target is that the optimal design variables to be in appropriate reliably levels. In this paper, a new model for the reliability based robust...

    Abstract
A compact printed monopole antenna for broadband application is presented. The proposed antenna, having a total physical size of 21 × 6.5 mm consists of a patch fed by a coaxial line and an SMA connector as partial finite ground plane. The modified patch plane with a slot in its feed point helps to increase the impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna. The optimal design may offer an ultra-wide impedance bandwidth from 2.56 GHz to 20 GHz. A prototype is fabricated and tested. The agreement between the simulated and measured results is quite good

Optimization of a vanillin assay for determination of anthocyanins using D-optimal design

    , Article Analytical Methods ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , Feb , 2012 , Pages 824-829 ; 17599660 (ISSN) Khoshayand, M. R ; Roohi, T ; Moghaddam, G ; Khoshayand, F ; Shahbazikhah, P ; Oveisi, M. R ; Hajimahmoodi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The vanillin assay is a spectrophotometric method for anthocyanin determination that is simple, quick and inexpensive. The method is preferred because of its high sensitivity, specificity and simplicity; however, the results of this test are influenced by several factors. Hence, a D-optimal experimental design approach was investigated to simultaneously, without loss of information, optimize five factors that influence the vanillin assay: acid normality, vanillin concentration, temperature, time and acid type. Further optimization with a D-optimal design and response surface analysis (RSM) showed that a second-order polynomial model fit the experimental data appropriately. The optimum...

    Abstract
In this research, design methods of radial flow compressor volutes are reviewed; the main criteria in volute primary designs are recognized and the most effective ones are selected. The effective parameters, i.e., spiral cross-section area, circumferential area distribution, exit cone, and tongue area of the compressor volute are parametrically studied to identify the optimum values. A numerical model has been prepared and verified through experimental data which are obtained from the designed turbocharger test rig. Different volutes are modeled and numerically evaluated using the same impeller and vane-less diffuser. For each model, the volute total pressure ratio, static pressure recovery...

    , Article Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering ; Volume 300 , 2016 , Pages 265-293 ; 00457825 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
An algorithm is proposed to optimize the performance of multiphase structures (composites) under elastodynamic loading conditions. The goal is to determine the distribution of material in the structure such that the time-averaged total stored energy of structure is minimized. A penalization strategy is suggested to avoid the checkerboard instability, simultaneously to generate near 0-1 topologies. As a result of this strategy, the solutions of presented algorithm are sufficiently smooth and possess the regularity of H1 function space. A simple method for the continuum adjoint sensitivity analysis of the corresponding PDE-constrained optimization problem is presented. It is general and can be...

    Abstract
In this present research work, a new configuration of the hybrid magnetorheological (MR) brake via T-shaped drum with an arc form surface boundary - the biomechanical geometric design of the hybrid MR brake as a prosthetic knee - is discussed and experimentally tested. The main purpose of this study is to develop a prosthetic knee with one rotary disc to fulfill the desired objective. To achieve this, three steps are considered. In the first step, to model the brake, slab method modeling is used to calculate the braking torque due to the arc surface. In the second step, the biomechanical geometric design is adjusted as an optimization problem to maximize the braking torque, minimize the...

    Abstract
Radiofrequency coils provide high-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of human tissues. A small RF coil produces MR images with a higher resolution compared to the commercial volume MR coils from mass limited samples. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) plays a key role in the optimal design of receiver radiofrequency coils. In this work, we present a three-loop saddle coil suitable for MR imaging of digits of the human body. The geometry of the introduced coil is optimized to achieve the highest SNR. The coil performance is evaluated through comparing the measured SNR maps of the optimal coil derived from MR images of a saline phantom with the corresponding measured SNR maps of a commercial...

    Abstract
Multi-speed resolvers are used in the applications that need higher accuracy. However, they suffer from losing absolute position information. To overcome this challenge and improve the reliability of detecting position, using multi-turn resolvers is recommended. The conventional configuration of multi-turn resolver is using two individual resolvers on one shaft and into a common frame. Using such configuration needs special care on setting the distance between two resolvers. In this paper a new structure based on dual side configuration is proposed. The performance of the double sided resolver is analyzed and optimized using an analytical model based on magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC)....

    Abstract
Laser shock peening (LSP) is known as a post processing surface treatment which can improve the mechanical properties of some materials. Shock waves are generated by confining the laser-induced plasma to cause a large pressure shock wave over a significant surface area. In the present study, effects of LSP on the electrochemical corrosion and micro hardness properties of 316L stainless steel alloy were investigated by changing the laser parameters such as the laser spot size, the average number of impacts, and the laser intensity. Since laser parameters do not cover the desired region of LSP, we have to use the proper design of experiment method, in which the D-optimal design of MATLAB was...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Gorgin-Poor, Hamed (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, electricity generation using renewable energy sources especially wind has gained considerable attention worldwide. Various generating systems have been proposed for wind turbines to convert wind mechanical power into electrical power. Up to 70% of the installed wind turbines incorporate Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and a fractionally rated power converter. Other schemes still have technological and economic penalties such as high cost of active materials, complexity of machine manufacturing and control systems and large and expensive converter, which limit their spread in wind power plants. Among these, Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) has...

Modeling and Optimal Design of a Solar Chimney Power Plant

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gharagozlou, Ali (Author) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The power generation system of this type of power plants operates on the air flowing through the power plant’s chimney and colliding with the turbine blades within the chimney. When the solar collector warms the nearby air and thus expands the air by absorbing the sunlight, a difference is created in the density. Then, this difference in the density creates the phenomenon of buoyancy, making the air pass to the top of the chimney through the collector. This study simulated and optimized a solar chimney power plant. The simulation and optimization were performed based on the information of Manzanares Solar Chimney Power Plant in Spain (located in 150 km from the south of Madrid). It was...
