The Investigation of the Forecast of Rail-Passenger Transport Ticket Reservation Demand

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi Asl, Ali (Author) ; Karami, Naser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Demand estimation has always been one of the most important components of marketing in all industries. Because the profitability of any organization depends on the demand for the product or service that the organization offers to the market. On the other hand, in order to optimize the performance of the organization and better planning, we need to have an estimate of demand in order to avoid wasting the available facilities by optimally allocating resources. Another issue that shows the importance of demand estimation is the dependence of optimal pricing on the amount of demand, which can be said to be the most important tool of the organization to manage its revenue. Optimal pricing can be...

Price-taker and price maker companies are considered in this thesis separateky. For the price-taker hybrid structure, the predivtion of day-ahead prices are used to evaluate the optimum bidding and offering strategies. Also, day-ahead market price uncertainty is modeled, using non-probabilistic Information Gap Decision Theory...

Optimum Highway Alignment Using Parallel Processing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Farzan (Author) ; Shafahi, Yusof (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optimum highway alignment problem is among the most substantial but large and complicated topics in transportation area. Infinite number of feasible solutions, numerous local optima and the constrained feature of the problem, associated with complex and mainly non-linear constrains, has put an extra effort into the problem-solving process. Moreover, the problem has a sensitive objective function to input variables. Due to the nature of the problem, conventional methods fail to find any exact solution, and so, using heuristic methods during the solving procedure is inevitable. Large-scale, complexity and sensitivity of the problem leads to a solution which is time-consuming and...

Effect of Obesity on Spinal Loads during Various Activities: A Combined in Vivo-Modeling Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Hossein (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide growing health challenge affecting ~30% of the world's population. Increased rate of disc degeneration and herniation, low back pain and surgery has been reported in obese individuals. Although obesity-related low back diseases have multifactorial etiology, presumably greater mechanical loads on the spine of heavier individuals during their daily activities may be considered as a risk factor. Likely larger trunk muscle sizes, disc sizes and thus passive stiffness in heavier individuals may however partly or fully offset the effect of their additional body weight on the spinal loads. In absence of in vivo approaches, the present study aims to construct subject-specific...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kazari, Hessam (Author) ; Oraee, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, two parts of research has been conducted. First, with the aim of minizing the fluctuations of power output of wind farms and the need for energy storage system, optimization of wind farm (WF) layout has been studied. Deployment of battery energy storage system (BESS) is a viable option to alleviate the inherent power fluctuation of wind farms. In this thesis and based on the power spectrum density (PSD) theorem, it is hown that the WF layout affects not only the total harvested energy but also the level of power fluctuation, which in turn influences required capacity of battery energy storage system (BESS) needed to mitigate the inherent power fluctuation of the wind...

Sensor Network Localization Using Semidefinite Representations and Facial Reductions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karkhaneh, Mohammad Mehdi (Author) ; Mahdavi Amiri, Nezamoddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to record environmental data such as temperature, sound level, and light intensity has grown dramatically. The specification of the locations of sensors is important. Using tools such as global positioning system (GPS) to find the location of sensors is not economical. Sensors can record their distances from neighboring sensors. On the other hand, the locations of some sensors are fixed. In wireless sensor network localization (SNL), we want to find the location of sensors using the available information. An approach for solving the SNL problem is to model the problem as an optimization problem and use an interior point method for its solution. Interior...

Image Steganalysis Based on Feature Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karandish, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Ghaemmaghami, Shahrokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image steganalysis is the technique and art of detecting covert communication via images.Reduction of features dimentionality is an important issue according to accuracy and time complexity. In this thesis, GA (genetic algorithm) and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) are used to reduce the dimentionality of JRM, a recently proposed feature set containing 11255 features which looks high dimentional compared to other feature sets which has been reduced by evolutionary algorithms so far. So, inspite of other works done using evolutionary algorithms in this field, we use the class sepearability criterion as fitness function instead of the accuracy of the classifier. Investigating these features,...

Passenger Aircrafts Wing Sections Optimization Using Shock Control Bump

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chaharlang Kiani, Kiarash (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The development of the boundary layer and shock boundary layer interaction essentialy determine the performance boundaries of transonic aircrafts. Employing shock and boundary layer control has therefore a large potential for improving flight performance. Aerodynamic surfaces of these aircrafts usually have very closed design points and critical points so small changes in angle of attack and free stream mach number cause entering drag divergence. Adaptive wings are the aerodynamic surfaces that use additional devices to control the flow pattern for improvment of aerodynamic performance in different flight conditions. Shock Control Bump is a control mechanism that is used for shock wave...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Chaharlang Kiani, Kiarash (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Mohsen (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present thesis is devoted to deeply reconsider the anti-vortex film cooling method and its undiscovered features using numerical optimization and advanced turbulence models. In this regards, a modified turbulent heat-flux model was developed to enhance the predictions in complex flow fields with highly anisotropy and non-equilibrium flow/thermal features. Next, the model was introduced to ANSYS FLUENT 16.0 package to prepare a more accurate flow solver. Then, the solver was coupled with an in-house Differential-Evolution (DE) optimization algorithm to find the optimum configurations of anti-vortex holes for several flow and geometric conditions such as flat-plate, convex/concave surfaces...

Localization Optimization: A Customized Cuckoo approach on DV-Hop Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chamani Tabriz, Solmaz (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor) ; Mazinani, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Node localization is an important issue in dynamic environments for location-dependent applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Geographical location information is necessary in many WSN applications. The goal of localization algorithm is to assign geographical coordinates to each unknown node position. Among different localization algorithms, DV-hop is one of the well- known algorithms. DV-hop algorithm is a range-free algorithm and has significant error in node location estimation. Since the node deployment is stochastic, minimizing this error has a critical role in location estimation accuracy of the algorithm. Increasing communication radius and number of anchors, to the certain...

    Parallel Machines with Batch Processing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chaghazardy, Delaram (Author) ; Salmasi, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the undeniable importance and applicability of both "batch processing" and "parallel machines" in service and industry, this survey strives to solve a real-world problem in which some identical parallel machine, capable of processing jobs in batches, are available. In batch processing the process of jobs starts and ends simultaneously. In real world the processing time of the batch is a function of some characteristics of the jobs in the batch. in this survey, for simplicity (as calculating the mentioned function is so difficult), we assume that the processing time of a batch equals the sum of the processing time of the jobs in the batch. we also have assumed that the capacity of a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Charkhtab Basim, Mohammad (Author) ; Esmaeil Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, most of the codes have placed a high value on Performance Based Design of structures; however, these methods are computationally complex and time-consuming, and caused researchers to seek new and efficient methods to investigate performance of structures under different intensities of seismic loading. This issue is much more obvious when optimum design of structures, which requires repetitive analysis, is investigated. In the present research, using Endurance Time analysis, we are trying to provide better insights into the dynamic behavior of structures in continuous performance levels. Then, as a first step, we will use the verified method to find the optimum outline of...
