    Abstract
    In this paper, a new radiation model for a single-slope solar still has been developed which for the first time takes into account the effect of all walls of the still on the amount of incident solar radiation on the water surface and each wall. In this model, the walls are projected on the cover to calculate the amount of beam radiation received by any components inside the still. This is in contrary to the previous models in which stills' walls were projected on a horizontal surface and their shadows on the water surface and the walls were either neglected or not computed properly. We propose a framework for systematic analysis of the tradeoff between the structural complexity of the controller and its performance. As the measure of the controller performance, an LQG based index is used. The problem is augmented with an additional term which forces sparsity on the complexity of a decentralized PID controller.     In this investigation, seismic behavior and design coefficients of the ribbed bracing system (RBS) are evaluated by considering various archetypes that reflect configuration variability. RBS is a lateral bracing system with a unique mechanics that prevents buckling-induced damage by allowing free deformation of brace under compression.     The performance of an HTPB/N2O hybrid motor was experimentally investigated. A hybrid motor was designed and manufactured in a laboratory with the purpose of studying the effects of various parameters on the motor's performance, including fuel regression rate and specific impulse. A series of tests were conducted to find a correlation between the fuel regression rate and the oxidizer's mass flux. The effects of chamber's pressure on the regression rate as well as other performance parameters were investigated.     This paper presents a new combined method for accurate upscaling of two-phase displacements in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. The method has the capability to retain its high performance for various flow regimes, from viscous to gravity dominant displacements, without the need for further modifications and computational steps. The grid on fine scale is used to recognize the complicated physics of flow which depends on dominated driving forces and their interaction with heterogeneity.     Here, nadir echo suppression (NES) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites is studied in detail. Moreover, advantages of suppressing the nadir echo in space domain, by beamforming, rather than in time domain, which imposes stringent restrictions on radar timing, are addressed. Performing NES in time domain restricts the swath width, as well as the selection of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF). It is shown that the spatial NES could increase the swath width by ∼25%. It also increases the freedom in PRF selection, which is useful in multiple-swath imaging modes and high-resolution wide-swath satellites.     This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performance of a two-class priority M/M/1 system. The prioritized class-1 jobs are real-time, served either with the preemptive or non-preemptive Earliest- Deadline- First (EDF) policy and can preempt the non real-time class-2 jobs. The preempted service of the class-2 job is resumed from the time in instances where no class-1 job is in the system. The service discipline of class-2 jobs is FCFS.     In this paper, the application of regular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes in Multi-Carrier Frequency-Hopping (MC-FH) CDMA systems is studied. To this end, different well-known constructions of regular LDPC codes are considered and the performance of LDPC coded MC-FH-CDMA systems, based on these constructions, are evaluated and compared in a frequency-selective slowly Rayleigh fading channel. These results are compared with those previously reported for super-orthogonal convolutionally coded MC-FH-CDMA systems.     In this paper, the performances of both uncoded and coded multiple access TH-UWB systems, introduced in [1-3] in multipath Rayleigh fading channels, are evaluated. The receiver is a selective diversity combining receiver, known as SRake.     A new impeller configuration with innovatively-designed shrouds is introduced, and its impact on the pressure head and efficiency of the semi-open centrifugal pump is explored using experimental and numerical approaches.     The performance of several regression methods is investigated to estimate the distribution of engineering demand parameters conditioned on intensity measures (EDP|IM) for small record sets. In particular, the performance of the multivariate ordinary least squares (OLS), a simultaneous mean-variance regression (MVR) done by a penalized weighted least-square loss function, and a mean-covariance/variance regression based on expectation maximization method (EM) are assessed.
