    Abstract
Hydroelastic effect in bottom slamming problem of high-speed craft is one of the most challenging issues in structural design. In this paper, numerical method is used to investigate the hydroelastic effect in bottom-water impact analysis of high-speed monohull craft. Slamming with two viewpoints of rigid and elastic structures (hydroelastic effect) is modelled by coupled computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and finite element method (FEM) techniques. The results showed that considering hydroelastic effect, especially in high-impact speed, reduces the structural deformations and stresses compared with quasi-statistic analysis. The effect of different parameters, such as boundary condition, plate...

    Abstract
During recent years, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) have been effectively used to control the seismic response of structural systems. Recovering the residual strains upon unloading (super-elasticity) or by heating (shape memory effect) is the main characteristic of SMA materials. This paper explores the efficiency of a proposed application of steel & SMA bolts in improving the seismic behavior of connections in steel Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) structures. A new semi-rigid, end-plate, beam-column connection is introduced, which is based on parallel application of steel and austenite-phase SMA bolts. A number of 3-D steel MRF structural models with different numbers of stories and mass...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of a baffle plate on flame deflection and its throttling are investigated numerically in a combustor consuming jet propellant JP. We study the plate effects on the resulting soot volume fraction, soot particles diameter, mass fractions of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and benzene (C6H6). We use a two-equation turbulence model, a PAH-inception two-equation soot model imposing oxidation due to OH agents, a detailed chemical kinetic consisting of 121 species and 2613 elementary reactions, and the flamelet combustion model to perform the current study. We also take into account the turbulence-chemistry interaction using the presumed-shape probability...

    Academic Press  2016
    Abstract
The flow-induced oscillation (FIO) of bluff bodies is commonly encountered in the fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems. In this study, we use an unstructured moving grid strategy and simulate the FIO of two rigid plates, which are elastically hinged at the two ends of a fixed flat plate in a cross-flow. We use a hybrid finite-element-volume (FEV) method in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) framework to study FIO of the two hinged plates. The current simulations are carried out for wide ranges of flow Reynolds number (50–175), spring stiffness coefficient, and the two hinged plates’ moment of inertia magnitudes. The influences of these parameters are investigated on the magnitudes...

    Abstract
The aero-thermo-elastic stability of layered cylindrical shells with viscoelstic cores is investigated. The Donnell's shell theory for the outer layers and the first order shear deformation theory for the viscoelastic layer are employed in conjunction with the von Karman-Donnell kinematic nonlinearity to construct the model. The pre-stresses and pre-deformations arisen from the temperature rise and static aerodynamic pressure are first determined by solving the nonlinear thermo-elastic equilibrium equations using by an exact analytical method. The results are then used in the linear aeroelastic stability equations and analyzed with the Galerkin's procedure to determine the supersonic flutter...

    Abstract
Based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the free vibration of the functionally graded (FG) truncated conical shells is analyzed. The truncated conical shell materials are assumed to be isotropic and inhomogeneous in the longitudinal direction. The two-constituent FG shell consists of ceramic and metal. These constituents are graded through the length, from one end of the shell to the other end. Using Hamilton's principle the derived governing equations are solved using differential quadrature method. Fast rate of convergence of this method is tested and its advantages over other existing solver methods are observed. The primary results of this study were obtained for four...

    Abstract
Rocks and rock-like materials frequently fail under compression due to the initiation, propagation and coalescence of the pre-existing microcracks. The mechanism of microcrack coalescence process in rock-like materials is experimentally and numerically investigated. The experimental study involves some uniaxial compression tests on rock-like specimens specially prepared from portland pozzolana cement, mica sheets and water. The microcrack coalescence is studied by scanning electron microscopy on some of the prepared thin specimens. It is assumed that the mica sheets play the role of microcracks within the specimens. Some analytical and numerical studies are also carried out to simulate the...

    Abstract
Based on the first-order nonlinear von Karman theory, the post-buckling analysis of FG circular plates under asymmetric transverse and in-plane loadings are presented. The nonlinear governing equations are reformulated using a stress function and a boundary layer function, and solved by employing a multi-parameter perturbation technique and Fourier series method. The material properties are assumed to vary through the plate thickness according to a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the constituents. The results are verified with the known results in the literature. The effects of loading, material properties, and boundary conditions on different response quantities are...

    Abstract
In this paper, nonlinear dynamical behavior of a rectangular plate traveled by a moving mass as well as an equivalent concentrated force with non-constant velocity is studied. The nonlinear governing coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) of motion are derived by energy method using Hamilton's principle based on the large deflection theory in conjuncture with the von-Karman strain-displacement relations. Then Galerkin's method is used to transform the equations of motion into a set of three coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) which then is solved in a semi-analytical way to get the dynamical response of the plate. Also, by using the Finite Element Method (FEM)...

    Abstract
Controlling topographic features at all length scales is of great importance for the interaction of cells with tissue regenerative materials. We utilized an indirect three-dimensional printing method to fabricate polymeric scaffolds with pre-defined and controlled external and internal architecture that had an interconnected structure with macro- (400-500 μm) and micro- (∼25 μm) porosity. Polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as model system to study the kinetics of tissue growth within porous scaffolds. The surface of the scaffolds was decorated with TiO2 and bioactive glass (BG) nanoparticles to the better match to nanoarchitecture of extracellular matrix (ECM). Micrometric BG particles were...

    Abstract
The dynamic response analysis of a delaminated composite beam with a general lay-up traversed under an arbitrary moving/non-moving force is presented. By employing the energy method and introducing a new finite element, the global mass and stiffness matrices for a Laminated Composite Beam (LCB) of Timoshenko type are derived in which the material couplings (bending-tension, bending-twist, and tension-twist couplings) with the Poisson's effect are considered. In deriving the governing equation the non-penetration condition is imposed by employing the method of Lagrange multipliers. Out of a self-developed finite element program, the natural frequencies and time response of such LCB are...

    Abstract
Superconducting materials are known to exhibit nonlinear effects and to produce harmonic generation and intermodulation distortion in superconductive circuits. In planar structures, these nonlinearities depend on the current distribution on the strip which is mainly determined by the structure of the device. This paper investigates the current distribution at the step-in-width discontinuity in superconducting microstrip transmission lines, which is computed by a numerical approach based on a 3-D finite-element method. This current distribution is used to obtain the parameters of the nonlinear circuit model for the superconducting microstrip step-in-width discontinuity. The proposed...

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of a concrete gravity dam considering an elastoplastic constitutive model for the foundation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 6 , 2013 , Pages 1676-1684 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Aghajanzadeh, S. M ; Ghaemian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2013
    Abstract
Dam failure can result in a catastrophic break followed by a ood wave, often with considerable loss of life or property. One of the main causes of dam failure is loss of shear strength and the existence of discontinuity within the foundation. Dynamic analysis of concrete dams usually considered concrete behavior to be nonlinear and the foundation rock is assumed to be linear. In this study, seismic analysis of a concrete gravity dam was conducted to investigate the effect of the foundation on the nonlinear response. A finite element model of a dam-reservoir-foundation was considered to properly model the foundation as well as dam body nonlinear behaviors. An elasto-plastic formulation was...

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 226, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 2902-2911 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Bazardehi, S. R. K ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Filtered mode shapes are used to detect the presence, location, size and shape of the delaminations in composite laminated plates with various boundary conditions. This method is the extension of a previous study by the authors on the delamination detection in the beams using irregularities of the mode shapes. The mode shapes are filtered to separate the smooth and irregular parts. Presence and situation of delamination affects these separated parts, and these effects are used to detect the delamination. Here, two new indicators, named 'slope of smooth part' and 'irregularities in the slope of smooth part', are introduced to increase the clarity of detected damage and reduce the noisy...

    Abstract
In the analysis of micro structures, due to proximity of the elements Van der Waals forces plays an important role on the dynamics of the structure. In the modeling process a similar approach should be considered for the capillary effect caused by the moisture in the environment. Microplates and microbeams are used widely in the design and manufacturing of sensors and actuators. These structures are usually made of a cantilever beam or plate along with a fixed substrate. The cantilever beam usually deflects due to applied voltage. By increasing the voltage the pull-in phenomenon takes place. It is believed that the short contact time is one the important characteristic of any micro switches....

    Abstract
In this study, based on the reduced form of elasticity displacement field for a long laminate, an analytical method is established to exactly obtain the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of generally laminated composite plates subjects to extension, torsion, and bending. The constant parameters being in the displacement field, which describe the global deformation of a laminate, are appropriately calculated by using the improved first-order shear deformation theory. Reddy's layerwise theory is subsequently employed for analytical and numerical examinations of the boundary layer stresses within arbitrary laminated composite plates. Various numerical results are developed for the...
