    Abstract
A novel thermosensitive hydrogel was synthesized by block copolymerization of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) macromere (PEG) onto chitosan backbone, using potassium per sulfate as a free radical initiator. This block copolymer exhibits a thermoreversible transition from an injectable solution at low temperature to a gel at body temperature. Synthesized copolymers were characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and DSC techniques. Solubility test was performed to compare water and organo-solubility of chitosan before and after copolymerization. Sol-gel transition behavior was investigated using the vial inversion method and viscosity measurements. The gelation behavior makes the...

The effect of hydrothermal temperature on the composition, morphology and size of HAp particles was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that the morphology and size of HAp particles can be effectively controlled by the presence of CTAB and PEG...

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with rigid cross-linked polyethylene glycol fumarate coating for application in imaging and drug delivery

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 113, Issue 19 , 2009 , Pages 8124-8131 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, M ; Simchi, A ; Imani, M ; Hafeli, U. O ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with proper surface coatings are increasingly being evaluated for clinical applications such as hyperthermia, drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, transfection, and cell/protein separation. To enhance the applicability of magnetic nanoparticles, two main problems must be overcome. First, as the drug coats the particle surface, a significant portion of it is quickly released upon injection (burst effect). Therefore, only small amounts of the drug reach the specific site after, for example, magnetic drug targeting. Second, once the surface-derivatized nanoparticles are inside the cells, the coating is likely digested, leaving the bare particles...

Superior anti-biofouling properties of mPEG-modified polyurethane networks via incorporation of a hydrophobic dangling chain

    , Article Progress in Organic Coatings ; Volume 158 , September , 2021 ; 03009440 (ISSN) Golmohammadian Tehrani, A ; Makki, H ; Ghaffarian Anbaran, R ; Vakili, H ; Ghermezcheshme, H ; Zandi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
PEG-modification is a proven method to enhance the hydrophilicity, protein resistance, and anti-biofouling properties of polymer coatings. It is considered as the gold standard interfacial modification technique such that the higher PEG content, the higher hydrophilicity, and lower protein adsorption, i.e., the initial stage of the biofouling process. Nevertheless, increasing the PEG content causes a higher water uptake, which declines the polymer mechanical strength and increases its hydrolytic degradation rate. Thus, an effective strategy to produce a limited-water-absorbing PEG-modified polymer is to force the majority of PEG molecules to migrate towards the interfacial region while the...

Super-hydrophilic characteristic of thermochemically prepared CdS nanocrystals

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Vol. 58 , April , 2014 , pp. 146-152 ; ISSN: 13869477 Marandi, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Babaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
CdS nanocrystals were thermochemically (thermally activated) synthesized thorough the reaction between CdSO4 and Na2S 2O3 in an aqueous solution. Thioglycolic Acid (TGA) was used as the capping agent and catalyst of the reaction. The method was based on heat activated dissociation of Na2S2O3 and controllable release of S and free electrons in the solution. CdS NCs were formed by heating the sample solution at 96 C for 1 h. The results of optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated round shape NCs with sizes about 3.0 nm. The nanocrystals were also luminescent and represented a broad emission with a peak located at 515 nm and FWHM of 160 nm. Several samples were...

    , Article Physics and Chemistry of Liquids ; Volume 47, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 148-159 ; 00319104 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Vossoughi, M ; Radfarnia, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A modified form of the UNIQUAC-NRF activity coefficient model was used to study the phase behaviour of the aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX) with different molecular weights at various temperatures. In the proposed model, a ternary interaction parameter was added to the expression for the excess Gibbs free energy and, in turn, to the corresponding activity coefficient rendered by the UNIQUAC-NRF model. The combinatorial part of the new model takes the same form as that of the original UNIQUAC model and the residual part considers the nonrandomness and also the binary and the ternary interactions among the molecules in mixtures of PEG, DEX, and...

    Abstract
Linear silicone rubber and polyethylene alloy produced from extrusion-injecting process will be present in separate phases. While samples are mixed with 1% dicumylperoxide, DCP, and injected in extruder, an alloy is almost formed. In addition, when the samples containing silicon rubber with vinyl group are mixed with polyethylene and passed in the vicinity of electron beam, a similar reaction occurs, as confirmed from FTIR spectrum. The water contact angles for the samples has been listed in the article. Furthermore, the crystallinity of samples produced via electron beam method is more than that obtained from peroxide method. On the other hand, the tensile strengths of produced samples via...

Studies on the properties and structure of electron-beam crosslinked low-density polyethylene/poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] blends

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 54, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 686-691 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Sabet, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (PEVA), crosslinked by electron-beam (EB) radiation, formed separate crystalline lattices with a homogeneous amorphous phase. The crystallinity of the EB-exposed samples slightly decreased, as verified by a slight reduction in the densities and melting heats and temperatures of the samples. The results obtained from both gel content and hot set tests showed that the degree of crosslinking in the amorphous regions was dependent on the dose and blend composition. The molecular weights between the crosslinks, measured from creep data, showed that an increasing PEVA content resulted in tighter network structures,...

    Abstract
A recyclable optical nanosensor was developed by immobilizing L-tyrosine functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate for rapid determination of Pb2+ ions. At first, the L-tyrosine functionalized AgNPs were assessed in the solution phase; the response time was lower than 15 s, and a limit of detection lower than 9 nM was obtained in the dynamic range of 1–1000 nM. For fabrication of the optical assay kit, the design of experiment (DOE) was used to optimize the immobilization efficiency of the nanoparticles on PET films by studying AgNO3 concentration and pH as two crucial parameters. The assay kit in optimal conditions showed a sharp localized...

Specific picomolar detection of a breast cancer biomarker her-2/neu protein in serum: electrocatalytically amplified electroanalysis by the aptamer/peg-modified electrode

    , Article ChemElectroChem ; Volume 4, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 872-879 ; 21960216 (ISSN) Salimian, R ; Kékedy Nagy, L ; Ferapontova, E. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-VCH Verlag  2017
    Abstract
Specific and sensitive electroanalysis of blood-circulating protein cancer biomarkers is often complicated by interference from serum proteins nonspecifically adsorbing at the biosensing interface and masking specific reactions of interest. Here, we have developed an electrocatalytically amplified assay for specific and sensitive analysis of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2/neu, a protein cancer biomarker over-expressed in breast cancers) that allows us to avoid both the interference from bovine serum albumin (BSA) and electrocatalytic amplification of the signal stemming from the specific aptamer−HER-2/neu binding. A HER-2/neu-specific thiolated aptamer sequence was...

    Abstract
CuMS2 (M=A1, In, Fe) ternary compounds were synthesized via the facile polyol method in autoclave. Depending on the functional groups of solvent and surfactant, the structure of the nanocrystals can be controlled in the form of wurtzite or chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite structure was obtained when the precursors solved in the mixture of diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol 600 and ammonium hydroxide. When the solvent was replaced by ethylene diamine, the wurtzite was obtained along with chalcopyrite (polytypism). The products were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for analysis of structural properties, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for studying morphological...

    Abstract
Homopolymer hydrogel of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and its nanocomposite counterpart were prepared to study their swelling properties. The hydrogels showed ability to absorb and retain electrolytes as well as binary mixtures of water and organic solvents (i.e., methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethylene glycol (EG), polyethylene glycol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The nanocomposite gel exhibited lower swelling in all solvent compositions in comparison with non-composite gel. Unlike conventional acrylic acid-based hydrogels, the poly(AMPS) gels showed superabsorbing capacity in pure ethanol, methanol, EG, DMSO and NMP. Meanwhile, swelling...

    Abstract
The modified Hummer technique was used in the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, and then SiO 2 decorated GO [GO(SiO 2 )] nanosheets were synthesized via the sol–gel method. Then, ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposites loaded with 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 wt % of GO(SiO 2 ) were prepared using magnesium ethoxide/GO(SiO 2 )-supported Ziegler–Natta catalysts via the in situ polymerization. Morphological study of the prepared polymer powders was assessed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, which showed that GO(SiO 2 ) nanohybrids have been uniformly dispersed and distributed into the UHMWPE matrix. Also, the neat UHMWPE and its nanocomposites were...
