    Abstract
Viscosity of mixed oil is an important parameter which is required in transportation and production processes of mixed crude oils. There is no universal and general model for prediction of viscosity of mixed oils at different conditions. Hence, developing simple, accurate and general models for prediction of mixed oil viscosity is of great importance. In this work three computer based models named MLP-NN, PSO-RBF and Hybrid-ANFIS were developed for prediction of viscosity of mixed oils. A number of 513 experimental data covering wide ranges of influencing parameters were utilized to develop the models. The accuracy of predictions of the developed models was examined by using different...

    Abstract
Optimal control frameworks are very important in optimization of multiple-arm robotic systems, although complexity, non-linearity and having large scales usually cause some computational problems in the capacity and time needed. in this paper, it is shown how by conducting the study of multiple-arm robotic systems, within a decomposition-coordination framework, the overall optimum can be achieved in only a few iterations. By using this methodology, the overall problem is considered as optimization of a two-level large-scale system. So with the aim of optimization, the problem is first decomposed into m sub-problems at the first level, where each sub-problem is solved using a typical gradient...

    Abstract
This paper develops methodology and technique tor the design, analysis, and impie mentation of an adaptive generalized predictive controller (AGPC) for Active Queue Management in TCP Networks. The TCP/AQM dynamic is modeled experimentally as a second-order system with a time delay where its parameters are estimated using the standard gradient algorithm. Based on this model, an AGPC is designed to gain the set-point tracking and robustness. AGPC, as a queue-based control mechanism, responds quickly to traffic changes, thus allowing for high utilization and small loss. We illustrate our results using ns-2 simulations and demonstrate the practical impact of adaptive model reference control on...

Efficient Data Aggregation in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadmoradi, Hessam Aldin (Author) ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the advances in wireless communications and electronics over the last few years, the development of networks of low-cost, low-power, and multifunctional sensors has received increasing attention. Most important constraints of this network are energy and bandwidth. Data aggregation is one of the effective approaches for reducing energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. Recent research on data collection reveals that, rather than reporting data through long, multi-hop and error-prone routes to a static sink using tree or cluster network structure, allowing and leveraging sink mobility is more promising for energy efficient data gathering. In this work we proposed an effective...

Leveraging User-Item Interactions for Trust Prediction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Beigi, Ghazaleh (Author) ; Jalili, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Trust prediction, the ability to identify how much to trust to allocate an unknown user, is an important prerequisite toward the development of scalable on-line e-commerce communities. We are more likely to purchase an item from a seller on an e-commerce websites such as eBay or Amazon, if our trusted acquaintances have reported positive experiences with that seller in the past. Reviews from trusted users will carry more weight towards the purchasing decision than reviews from anonymous or unknown customers. Thus, these platforms must support computational mechanisms for propagating trust between users. One of the significant challenges in the trust prediction problem is the unprecedented...

Development of Neuro-Fuzzy Based Self-Adaptive Flight Control System in the Presence of Internal and External Disturbances

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology (Author) ; Banazadeh, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A comprehensive adaptive flight control system in the presence of internal and external disturbances is introduced in this dissertation. In this regard, two different approaches, namely, a centralized model and a multi-model structure are developed using the capabilities of neuro-fuzzy systems in order to identify the dynamic model of an air vehicle after the fault occurrence in the simultaneous presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances. Subsequently, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach is designed for the identified model, which can satisfactorily deal with nonlinear and multi-variable nature of the system. In addition, system constraints can be effectively considered...

Multi Variable Generalized Predictive Control of a Solution Copolymerization Reaction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghaffarian, Shahab (Author) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Continuous synthesis of different kinds of industrial copolymers plays an important role in economics of the polymer industry. But copolymerization reactions are complex and with a high degree of nonlinearity so the control problem in this case needs a detailed study on system dynamic behavior. One of the solutions is using a optimal control method in the shape of predictive controllers. The main goal in this thesis is to design a generalized multi-varriable predictive controller for a solution copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate in a continuous stirred tank reactor with separator and recycle stream. In this study, after simulating the nonlinear model of the process...

    Abstract
Pressure filters are popular in small municipal water treatment plants. One of the principles for designing and using the various units of water treatment plants is the ability of assigning and predicting the performance of those units under different and various conditions that could be verified by making pilot scale tests and could be modeled by means of available programs and software such as artificial neural network. The goals of this study that was conducted to predict pressure filter efficiency are: (1) evaluations of pressure filter efficiency for turbidity removal under different conditions such as turbidity of raw water, filtration rate and filter pressure changes; (2) statistical...

    Abstract
A search for the rare decays Bs0→μ+μ- and B0→μ+μ- is performed in pp collisions at √s=7TeV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.14fb-1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In both cases, the number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with expectations from background and standard-model signal predictions. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(Bs0→μ +μ-)<1.9×10-8 and B(B0→μ+μ-)<4.6×10-9, at 95% confidence level

Online Multi-step Ahead Prediction of Time-Varying Solar and Geomagnetic Activity Indices via Adaptive Neurofuzzy Modeling and Recursive Spectral Analysis

    , Article Solar Physics ; Volume 272, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 189-213 ; 00380938 (ISSN) Mirmomeni, M ; Lucas, C ; Araabi, B. N ; Moshiri, B ; Bidar, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The time-varying Sun as the main source of space weather affects the Earth's magnetosphere by emitting hot magnetized plasma in the form of solar wind into interplanetary space. Solar and geomagnetic activity indices and their chaotic characteristics vary abruptly during solar and geomagnetic storms. This variation depicts the difficulties in modeling and long-term prediction of solar and geomagnetic storms. On the other hand, the combination of neurofuzzy models and spectral analysis has been a subject of interest due to their many practical applications in modeling and predicting complex phenomena. However, these approaches should be trained by algorithms that need to be carried out by an...

Fast intra- and inter-prediction mode decision of H.264/AVC for medical frame compression based on region of interest

    , Article Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences ; Volume 5, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 397-411 ; 19918178 (ISSN) Jafari, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper aims at applying H.264/AVC in medical video compression applications and improving its compression performance with higher perceptual quality and lower coding complexity. We propose a new method that uses lossless compression in the region of interest (ROI) and very high rate lossy compression in other regions. The propose method achieves a fast intra- and interprediction mode decision that is based on encountering coarse MBs for intra- and inter- prediction mode decision of the background region and fine MBs for the ROI region. The MBs of the background region are encoded with the maximum quantization parameter allowed by H.264/AVC in order to maximize the number of null...

Predictive tri-linear benchmark curve for in-plane behavior of adobe walls

    Abstract
In the present study, numerical simulations are conducted to estimate the in-plane response of adobe walls subjected to pseudo-static cyclic loading based on the finite element code ABAQUS. The simplified micro-modeling approach is adopted and an interface model reported in ABAQUS material library is applied as material model for zero-thickness interface elements. The comparison between obtained results and field test data results in good agreement. Parametric studies are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of independent parameters changes on response of adobe walls. It is noted that mechanical properties of joints and adobe units play an active role on in-plane behavior of walls. A...

Robustness investigation of a ducted-fan aerial vehicle control, using linear, adaptive, and model predictive controllers

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Mechatronic Systems ; Volume 6, Issue 2-3 , 2015 , Pages 108-117 ; 17568412 (ISSN) Emami, S. A ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A comparison of three common controllers for stabilising a vertical take-off and landing air vehicle is presented. RMIT is a small sized tail-sitter ducted fan air vehicle with a particular configuration layout, multiple control surfaces, low weight, and high-speed flight capability. The main problem here is control effectiveness at low flight speeds and transition manoeuvres because of the inherent instability. In the current study, a comprehensive nonlinear model is firstly developed for RMIT, followed by a validation process. Subsequently, linear, adaptive and model predictive controllers are designed in vertical flight. Based on the simulation results, it is shown that the linear...

    Storage-aware value prediction

    , Article Proceedings - 13th Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design: Architectures, Methods and Tools, DSD 2010, 1 September 2010 through 3 September 2010, Lille ; 2010 , Pages 722-728 ; 9780769541716 (ISBN) Salehi, M ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Despite the huge potential, value predictors have not been used in modern processors. This is partially due to the complex structures associated with such predictors. In this paper we study value predictors and investigate solutions to reduce storage requirements while imposing negligible coverage cost. Our solutions build on the observation that conventional value predictors do not utilize storage efficiently as they allocate too much space for small and frequently appearing values. We measure data width requirement and entropy in a subset of predictor resources and show that values stored in predictors show limited sizes and very small entropy. We exploit this behavior and suggest...

Fuzzy predictive control based multiple models strategy for a tubular heat exchanger system

    , Article Applied Intelligence ; Volume 33, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 247-263 ; 0924669X (ISSN) Mazinan, A. H ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This work deals with the problem of controlling the outlet temperature of a tubular heat exchanger system by means of flow pressure. The usual industrial case is to try to control the outlet temperature by either the temperature or the flow of the fluid, which flows through the shell tube. But, in some situations, this is not possible, due to the fact that the whole of system coefficients variation cannot quite be covered by control action. In this case, the system behavior must precisely be modeled and appropriate control action needs to be obtained based on novel techniques. A new multiple models control strategy using the well-known linear generalized predictive control (LGPC) scheme has...

    Abstract
The burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline, coal, oil, natural gas in combustion reactions results in the production of carbon dioxide. The phase behavior of the carbon dioxide + water system is complex topic. Unlike methane, CO2 exhibits a minimum in the water content. These minima cannot be predicted by existing methods accurately. In this communication, two mathematical-based procedures have been proposed for accurate computation of CO2 water content for tempe-ratures between 273.15 and 348.15 K and the pressure range between 0.5 and 21 MPa. The first is based on least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) algorithm and the second applies multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new model predictive controller is introduced to control a power unit process with three inputs and three outputs. This method is proposed to reduce the complexity of the required computation. In fact, the presented controller ensures achieving an acceptable performance in the presence of noise and disturbances and reduces the volume of calculations to control a complex and nonlinear boilerturbine process. The simulation results indicate that the implementation of the proposed controller requires less computing time while the performance degradation is not more than five percent

    Abstract
A novel adaptive model-based predictive controller for attitude and trajectory tracking of a vertical take-off and landing(VTOL) aircraft in the simultaneous presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances is introduced in this study. Animportant challenge of designing the model-based controllers is developing an accurate model, especially in the presence ofmodel uncertainties. In this study, first, the nominal model of a ducted-fan air vehicle, which is a multi-input multi-outputnonlinear system with non-minimum phase behaviour, is given as the test case of this research. After that, two modified robustand adaptive model predictive controllers are proposed for tracking a...

    Abstract
In this research, aerodynamic design of a twin-entry radial-inflow turbine was done based on the direct method using a developed design code. The Garrett turbocharger was chosen for this purpose. At the first step, the 1D design, based on the impeller efficiency convergence, was performed. In 3D design, which is divided into preliminary and detail design, the profiles of the impeller and blade angle was carried out. Afterward the 3D shape of the blade can be achieved by combining these profiles. There is a good geometrical agreement between designed impeller and the laboratory’s existing impeller in both steps. In order to predict the performance of the turbine, the 1D analysis code was...
