    Abstract
Some periodic and quasi-periodic pulse trains are emitted by different sources in the environment and a number of sensors receive them through a single channel simultaneously. We are often interested in separating these pulse trains for source identification at sensors. This identification process is termed as deinterleaving pulse trains. Deinterleaving pulse trains has wide applications in communications, radar systems, neural systems, biomedical engineering, and so on. This paper studies the deinterleaving problem with the assumption that both sources and sensors are fixed. In this study, the problem of deinterleaving pulse trains is modeled as a blind source separation (BSS) problem. To...

Robust controllability assessment via semi-definite programming

    , Article Systems and Control Letters ; Volume 98 , 2016 , Pages 1-7 ; 01676911 (ISSN) Babazadeh, M ; Nobakhti, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2016
    Abstract
This paper presents a new framework for systematic assessment of the controllability of uncertain linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. The objective is to evaluate controllability of an uncertain system with norm-bounded perturbation over the entire uncertain region. The method is based on a singular-value minimization problem, over the entire complex plane. To solve the problem, first, a necessary and sufficient condition is proposed to avert the difficulties of griding over the complex plane, and to verify the controllability of directed and undirected networks in a single step. Secondly, the results are utilized to formulate the problem as two Lyapunov-based linear matrix inequalities...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel and practical integration of the inventory control and vendor selection problems for a manufacturing system that provides multiple products for several stores located in different places. The replenishment policy of each store is the economic order quantity under a multi-sourcing strategy in which the demand rate decreases as the selling price increases. In this strategy, the ordered quantity of each store for each product can be replenished by a set of selected vendors among all. In addition, the selected vendors can deliver the required products within a certain time window based on a soft time-window mechanism. The aim is to minimize the total system cost and...

    Abstract
This paper deals with learning an overcomplete set of atoms that have low mutual coherence. To this aim, we propose a new dictionary learning (DL) problem that enables a control on the amounts of the decomposition error and the mutual coherence of the atoms of the dictionary. Unlike existing methods, our new problem directly incorporates the mutual coherence term into the usual DL problem as a regularizer. We also propose an efficient algorithm to solve the new problem. Our new algorithm uses block coordinate descent, and updates the dictionary atom-by-atom, leading to closed-form solutions. We demonstrate the superiority of our new method over existing approaches in learning low-coherence...

Multi-label classification with feature-aware implicit encoding and generalized cross-entropy loss

    , Article 24th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, 10 May 2016 through 12 May 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 1574-1579 ; 9781467387897 (ISBN) Farahnak Ghazani, F ; Soleymani Baghshah, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In multi-label classification problems, each instance can simultaneously have multiple labels. Since the whole number of available labels in real-world applications tends to be (very) large, multi-label classification becomes an important challenge and recently label space dimension reduction (LSDR) methods have received attention. These methods first encode the output space to a low-dimensional latent space. Afterwards, they predict the latent space from the feature space and reconstruct the original output space using a suitable decoding method. The encoding method can be implicit which learns a code matrix in the latent space by solving an optimization problem or explicit which learns a...

    Abstract
Motivated by the bus escape routing problem in printed circuit boards, we revisit the following problem: given a set of n axis-parallel rectangles inside a rectangular region R, find the maximum number of rectangles that can be extended toward the boundary of R, without overlapping each other. We provide an efficient algorithm for solving this problem in O(n2 log3 n log log n) time, improving over the current best O(n3)-time algorithm available for the problem

Secure overlay routing using key pre-distribution: A linear distance optimization approach

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing ; Volume 15, Issue 9 , 2016 , Pages 2333-2344 ; 15361233 (ISSN) Gharib, M ; Yousefi'zadeh, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Key pre-distribution algorithms have recently emerged as efficient alternatives of key management in today's secure communications landscape. Secure routing techniques using key pre-distribution algorithms require special algorithms capable of finding optimal secure overlay paths. To the best of our knowledge, the literature of key pre-distribution systems is still facing a major void in proposing optimal overlay routing algorithms. In the literature work, traditional routing algorithms are typically used twice to find a NETWORK layer path from the source node to the destination and then to find required cryptographic paths. In this paper, we model the problem of secure routing using...

Redundancy allocation problem of a system with increasing failure rates of components based on Weibull distribution: A simulation-based optimization approach

    , Article Reliability Engineering and System Safety ; Volume 152 , 2016 , Pages 187-196 ; 09518320 (ISSN) Pourkarim Guilani, P ; Azimi, P ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Akhavan Niaki, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The redundancy allocation problem (RAP) is a useful method to enhance system reliability. In most works involving RAP, failure rates of the system components are assumed to follow either exponential or k-Erlang distributions. In real world problems however, many systems have components with increasing failure rates. This indicates that as time passes by, the failure rates of the system components increase in comparison to their initial failure rates. In this paper, the redundancy allocation problem of a series-parallel system with components having an increasing failure rate based on Weibull distribution is investigated. An optimization method via simulation is proposed for modeling and a...

    Abstract
In a medium term planning horizon, a retailer should determine its forward contracting and pool participating strategies as well as the selling price to be offered to the customers. Considering a competitive retail electricity market, the number of clients being supplied by any retailer is a function of the selling prices and some other characteristics of all the retailers. This paper presents an equilibrium problem formulation to model the retailer's medium term decision making problem considering the strategy of other retailers. Decision making of any single retailer is formulated as a risk constraint stochastic programming problem. Uncertainty of pool prices and clients' demands is...

    Abstract
The quickest path reliability problem evaluates the probability of transmitting some given units of flow from a source node to a sink node through a single minimal path in a stochastic-flow network within some specified units of time. This problem has been recently extended to the case of transmitting flow through q separate minimal paths (SMPs) simultaneously within a budget constraint. Here, we propose a new algorithm to solve such problems. The algorithm finds all the minimal vectors for which a given demand level d units of flow can be transmitted through q SMPs from a source node to a sink node satisfying some given time and budget limits. In our proposed algorithm, a special...

    Abstract
We study a capacitated multi-facility location-allocation problem in which the customers have stochastic demands based on Bernoulli distribution function. We consider the capacitated sub-sources of facilities to satisfy demands of customers. In the discrete stochastic problem, the goal is to find optimal locations of facilities among candidate locations and optimal allocations of existing customers to operating facilities so that the total sum of fixed costs of operating facilities, allocation cost of the customers, expected values of servicing and outsourcing costs is minimized. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. Since finding an optimal solution may...

    Abstract
In this paper, a mathematical formulation is first derived for a homogenous fuzzy series–parallel redundancy allocation problem, where both the system and its subsystems can only take two states of complete perfect and complete failure. Identical redundant components are included in order to achieve desirable system reliability. The components of each subsystem characterized by their cost, weight, and reliability, are purchased from the market under all-unit discount and incremental quantity discount strategies. The goal is to find the optimum combination of the number of components for each subsystem that maximizes the system reliability under total fuzzy cost and weight constraints. An...

Critic learning in multi agent credit assignment problem

    , Article Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 3465-3480 ; 10641246 (ISSN) Rahaie, Z ; Beigy, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Multi-agent systems can be seen as an apparatus for testing the performance of real distributed systems. One problem encountered in multi-agent systems with the learning capability is credit assignment. This paper presents two methods for solving this problem. The first method assigns credit to the agents according to the history of the interaction while the second method assigns credit to the agents according to the knowledge of agents, and thus the shares of the agents are extracted from the feedback of the environment. The computer experiments show that critic learning has a positive impact in credit assignment problem

    Abstract
Distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) is a precious operation strategy that can improve the system from different aspects including total cost, reliability, and power quality. Nevertheless, the high complexity of the new smart grids has resulted in much uncertainty in the DFR problem that necessities the use of a sufficient stochastic framework to deal with them. In this way, this paper proposes a new stochastic framework based on cloud theory to account the uncertainties associated with multiobjective DFR problem from the reliability point of view. Cloud theory is constructed based on fuzzy theory and probability idea. In comparison with the Monte Carlo simulation method, cloud models...

    , Article International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing ; 2017 , Pages 1-15 ; 19552513 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Golmohammadi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM), is a new technology for the manufacturing of the physical parts through an additive manner. In the AM process, the orientation pattern of the part is an important variable that significantly influences the product properties such as the build time, the surface roughness, the mechanical strength, the wrinkling, and the amount of support material. The build time and the surface roughness are the more important criteria than others that can be considered to find the optimum orientation of parts. The designers and manufacturing engineers usually attempt to find an optimum solution to reach the product with high quality at the minimum time. Determining the optimum...

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 120 , 2017 , Pages 81-90 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Jamshidi, M ; Arghavani, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, considering two-dimensional porosity distribution through a functionally graded porous (FGP) beam, its optimal distributions are obtained. A multi-objective optimization problem is defined to maximize critical buckling load and minimize mass of the beam, simultaneously. To this end, Timoshenko beam theory is employed and equilibrium equations for two-dimensional functionally graded porous (2D-FGP) beam are derived. For the solution, we present generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) and consider two symmetric boundary conditions (Clamped-Clamped and Hinged-Hinged). Solving generalized eigenvalue problem, critical buckling load for 2D-FGP beam is then obtained....

Production-inventory-routing coordination with capacity and time window constraints for perishable products: heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms

    , Article Journal of Cleaner Production ; Volume 161 , 2017 , Pages 598-618 ; 09596526 (ISSN) Vahdani, B ; Niaki, S.T.A ; Aslanzade, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many industries are involved in production and distribution of perishable products. On one hand, due to the short life cycle of these products, there should be more precaution on the issues related to supply chain planning including material requirement planning, production, transportation, etc. compared to the ones in other industries. On the other hand, as there is a fierce competition among various companies, the need for coordination in such activities is imperative, where the use of an integrated approach is justifiable. One of these coordination problems is how to integrate important operational decisions including production scheduling and vehicle routing problem; the most important...

    , Article 2017 12th International Conference on Sampling Theory and Applications, SampTA 2017, 3 July 2017 through 7 July 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 543-547 ; 9781538615652 (ISBN) Javaheri, A ; Zayyani, H ; Marvasti, F ; Anbarjafari, G ; Kivinukk, A ; Tamberg, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the missing sample recovery problem using methods based on sparse approximation. In this regard, we investigate the algorithms used for solving the inverse problem associated with the restoration of missed samples of image signal. This problem is also known as inpainting in the context of image processing and for this purpose, we suggest an iterative sparse recovery algorithm based on constrained l1-norm minimization with a new fidelity metric. The proposed metric called Convex SIMilarity (CSIM) index, is a simplified version of the Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) index, which is convex and error-sensitive. The optimization problem incorporating this criterion, is then...

Sensor selection cost optimisation for tracking structurally cyclic systems: a P-order solution

    , Article International Journal of Systems Science ; Volume 48, Issue 11 , 2017 , Pages 2440-2450 ; 00207721 (ISSN) Doostmohammadian, M ; Zarrabi, H ; Rabiee, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Measurements and sensing implementations impose certain cost in sensor networks. The sensor selection cost optimisation is the problem of minimising the sensing cost of monitoring a physical (or cyber-physical) system. Consider a given set of sensors tracking states of a dynamical system for estimation purposes. For each sensor assume different costs to measure different (realisable) states. The idea is to assign sensors to measure states such that the global cost is minimised. The number and selection of sensor measurements need to ensure the observability to track the dynamic state of the system with bounded estimation error. The main question we address is how to select the state...
