A method for ranking non-extreme efficient DMUs
, Article CIE 2014 - 44th International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering and IMSS 2014 - 9th International Symposium on Intelligent Manufacturing and Service Systems, Joint International Symposium on "The Social Impacts of Developments in Information, Manufacturing and Service Systems" - Proceedings ; Volume 7, Issue 2 , February , 2014 , pp. 618-622 ; ISSN: 18624480 ; Khosravi, Sh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a method to measure the efficiency of a DMU (Decision Making Unit, e.g. school, public agencies and banks). One of the ways for determining rank of DMUs is efficient score of each DMU. An interesting research issues is to discriminate between efficient DMUs. In literatures, supper efficiency is an applicable method for ranking efficient DMUs. The main drawback of this method is an inability of this method to rank non-extreme efficient DMUs. Therefore, this issue reduces the usefulness of this method. In this paper we propose a new ranking system for non-extreme efficient DMUs (Decision Making Units) based upon the omission of DMUs from reference set of the...
A queuing approach for a tri-objective manufacturing problem with defects: A tuned Pareto-based genetic algorithm
, Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 73, issue. 9-12 , May , 2014 , p. 1373-1385 ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Maleki, L ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this research, a manufacturing facility with independent workstations to remanufacture nonconforming products is investigated. Each workstation is first modeled as an M/M/m queuing system with m being a decision variable. Then, a tri-objective integer nonlinear programming models is developed to formulate the problem. The first objective tries to minimize the waiting times of products, while the second one tries to maximize the minimum reliability of machines at the workstations. Since minimization of the waiting times results in using a large number of machines with higher idle times, the third objective is considered to minimize the mean idle time of the machines. The aim is to...

, Article Archive of Applied Mechanics ; Vol. 84, issue. 5 , May , 2014 , p. 657-669 ; 09391533 ; Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Toozandehjani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Both numerical and experimental researches are carried out to study the strength of the composite double-bolted joints and the bearing damage propagation. A mesoscale level progressive damage model along with analytical formulation is used to predict the bearing failure of carbon-epoxy composite plates. This damage model is introduced as a user material subroutine in the commercial software ABAQUS, and the maximum failure load is calculated. In order to validate the numerical results, experimental tests are also conducted in which comparison between the results shows an excellent agreement. Furthermore, the effects of the bolt distances on the maximum failure load are studied. The results...
An application of quality function deployment method in engineering materials selection
, Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 55, issue , 2014 , p. 912-920 ; Abedian, A ; Milani, A. S ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In transition from concept design to detail design, designers and engineers need to find specific materials to optimize performance of the systems. The large number of materials and the wide range of manufacturing processes cause engineers always to seek new materials selection methods. In this research work a new method so called QFD method, which employs materials indices, is introduced. The method enjoys a combination of Ashby's materials selection concepts with the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tool. The QFD method, which is modified here to fit the materials selection field, provides the designer with the required weighting factors for the material indices. Incorporation of House of...

A capacitated multi-product dynamic lot-sizing problem by considering expiration dates; a new approach
, Article IFAC Proceedings Volumes (IFAC-PapersOnline) ; 2013 , Pages 152-157 ; 14746670 (ISSN) ; 9783902823359 (ISBN) ; Sazvar, Z ; Baboli, A ; Rekik, Y ; Akbari Jokar, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Although managing and controlling the inventories of perishable products is progressively becoming more important, they are often neglected in lot-sizing research and modeling. This paper studies a new multi-product multi-period dynamic lot sizing problem, where the inventories of products are assumed to be expired at a pre-specified date. For this purpose we assume a retailer that purchases products in large quantities (lot size) from manufacturers, and then sells smaller quantities (or single units) to the consumer. So, the order quantities can be merely an integer multiplier of that product batch size. The retailer also owns a capacitated warehouse. In order to make decisions on "how much...
Neuromorphic multiple-fault diagnosing system based on plant dynamic characteristics
, Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 52, Issue 36 , 2013 , Pages 12927-12936 ; 08885885 (ISSN) ; Boozarjomehry, R. B ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2013
Abstract
In many cases, multiple-fault diagnosis of plant-wide systems based on steady-state data is impossible. To solve this problem, a new diagnosis strategy based on neural networks has been proposed. In the suggested framework, the neural network is used as the diagnoser trained by a hybrid set of steady and dynamic characteristic data of the system. The dynamic characteristic data include overshoot and undershoot values of measured variables and their corresponding occurrence times. To evaluate its performance, the proposed scheme was used in the diagnosis of the concurrent faults of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process. Various combinations of concurrent faults were considered in this...
Monitoring autocorrelated multivariate simple linear profiles
, Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 67, Issue 5-8 , 2013 , Pages 1857-1865 ; 02683768 (ISSN) ; Noorossana, R ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
2013
Abstract
Recently, many researchers and practitioners have shown interest on profile monitoring as a relatively new subarea of statistical process control. One main reason for this interest, and perhaps a key factor for the contributions of many researchers to this field, is the various applications of profile monitoring in real life. Although one can easily encounter many univariate applications of profile monitoring in service and manufacturing environments, there exist situations where quality of a product or process needs to be modeled in multivariate terms. In this paper, we investigate monitoring of multivariate simple linear profiles in phase II when independence assumption of observations...
Evolutionary learning methodology: A case study of R&D strategy development
, Article Technological Forecasting and Social Change ; Volume 80, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 956-976 ; 00401625 (ISSN) ; Arasti, M. R ; Hounshell, D. A ; Sahebzamani, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This article concerns the notion of methodology in strategic management of R&D/technology. Though development of new tools and methods has received much attention during the recent decades, attention to understanding methodologies has remained disproportionally low. In this study we distinguish two methodologies that are used in strategic management of R&D/technology: planning methodology and evolutionary learning methodology. We mainly focus on defining and describing the origins, nature, and characteristics of the latter. We propose a framework for methodology selection by investigating context, content, and process factors. Using this framework, we provide supportive evidence for...

Abstract
Trim control mechanisms such as interceptors and trim flaps have been widely used in recent years in highspeed crafts for ride and trim control. In spite of their extensive application, a few studies investigating the impact of interceptors on planing craft performance, have been published. In the present study, the impact of interceptors on planing crafts hydrodynamic quality is investigated through application of an experimental method. Two scaled-down models of high-speed planing mono-hull and catamaran are tested with and without interceptors in calm water at different heights of the interceptors to investigate the effect of interceptors on drag reduction of the models. The first one is...

Abstract
The Higgs boson was postulated nearly five decades ago within the framework of the standard model of particle physics and has been the subject of numerous searches at accelerators around the world. Its discovery would verify the existence of a complex scalar field thought to give mass to three of the carriers of the electroweak force-the W+, W-, and Z 0 bosons-as well as to the fundamental quarks and leptons. The CMS Collaboration has observed, with a statistical significance of five standard deviations, a new particle produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The evidence is strongest in the diphoton and four-lepton (electrons and/or muons) final states,...
An inspection game to provide incentive for cooperation with corrupted inspectors
, Article Proceedings of the 2012 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining, ASONAM 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 730-732 ; 9780769547992 (ISBN) ; Safari, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Open and autonomous environments, such as peer to peer networks or many social networks, are efficient only if cooperation among nodes is ensured. In order to ensure cooperative behavior, we have added a new node type to the system, called inspector and used game theoretical tools to analyze the system. Inspectors punish both misbehaving nodes as well as nodes who provide dishonest ratings about other peers. Analyzing the proposed inspection game ensures that corruption of inspectors and misbehavior of nodes is bounded. The game enables the system designer to set the amount of corruption that is allowed according to the budget
Opposing trends of geometrical parameters in maximisation of micro-ring resonator quality factor
, Article Electronics Letters ; Volume 47, Issue 25 , 2011 , Pages 1388-1390 ; 00135194 (ISSN) ; Rezaei, M ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Opposing trends of geometrical parameters in minimisation of bending loss and thus in maximising the quality factor are briefly discussed for micro-ring resonators. It is shown that, while the quality factor of low order modes is an oscillatory function of geometrical parameters, the quality factor of high order modes is a monotonic function. The former has discrete pairs of optimum inner and outer ring radii which maximises the quality factor. In contrast, the quality factor of the latter has no local maximum. Introduction of slight inhomogeneities does not change the overall behaviour of the quality factor but can increase its overall level when the refractive index of the ring region...

Abstract
This paper uses singular value decomposition (SVD) for studying the dynamic properties of fatigue-loaded intervertebral disc. Previously, this problem had been addressed using mathematical models of using mass, spring and damper or based on poroelastic theory. This paper utilizes the signal processing approach and attempts to describe SVD based feature that can be an indicator for change in behavioral performance of the intervertebral disc warning the occurrence of temporary or permanent change in the structure or abnormality in behavior. The results are encouraging; however, further validation is required with more data
Experimental research on heat transfer of water in tubes with conical ring inserts in transient regime
, Article International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 38, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 668-671 ; 07351933 (ISSN) ; Lotfi, R ; Rashidi, A. M ; Sattari, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Forced convective of water in horizontal tubes with conical tube inserts has been studied experimentally. The transient flow regime has been used for the tests. Experimental results are validated with existing well established correlation. The turbulators were placed in two different arrangements: converging conical ring, referred to as CR array and diverging conical ring, DR array. Two correlations for the Nusselt number based on the experiment are introduced for practical use. It is found that the insertion of turbulators has enhanced the Nusselt number for the DR arrangement up to 521%, and for the CR arrangement up to 355%, although using the turbulators cause a significant increase in...
