Emergency Management Decision Support System Based on Bayesian Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
This research proposes a probabilistic framework for decision support in emergency response. Currently, decision-making is traditionally based on data from reconnaissance teams, while there are other information sources that assist decision-making. These sources of information include social sensors, physical sensors, aerial imaging, and crowdsourcing. The information obtained from these sources is heterogeneous and uncertain, requires a probabilistic data fusion framework to be used in decision making. This research employs Bayesian Networks for this purpose. The outstanding feature of the Bayesian Network is its real-time nature, which set apart it from other methods. This feature makes...
Evaluating the Resilience of the Transportation Network Against Extreme Flooding: A Case Study of Transportation Network of Shiraz City
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kermanshah, Amir Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Because of severe weather events (such as floods and storms), transportation infrastructures are directly and indirectly damaged, which may cause many undesirable economic and social losses for people and cities. Among various severe events, flood is known as an important factor in the breakdown (closure of roads and bridges) of the components of the transportation network. Evaluating the performance of the city's road transport network against flood events leads to a better understanding of the network's condition and allows decision-makers to identify the weaknesses in the system and reduce potential damages as much as possible. In this research, with the aim of investigating the...

Abstract
A multi-stage secret sharing (MSS) scheme is a method of sharing a number of secrets among a set of participants, such that any authorized subset of participants could recover one secret in every stage. The first MSS scheme was proposed by He and Dawson in 1994, based on Shamir's well-known secret sharing scheme and one-way functions. Several other schemes based on different methods have been proposed since then. In this paper, the authors propose an MSS scheme using All-Or-Nothing Transform (AONT) approach. An AONT is an invertible map with the property that having "almost all" bits of its output, one could not obtain any information about the input. This characteristic is employed in the...

Abstract
A widely dispersed asset, electric grid has enormous impacts on people’s lives. Recently occurred various high-impact low-probability (HILP) threats have raised the concerns about the classical reliability-oriented view. Therefore, withstanding unexpected and less frequent severe situations still remain a significant challenge. As a critical infrastructure (CI), power systems are more and more expected to be resilient to HILPs. So, utilities put their endeavours to harden enough their networks against HILPs. In this regard, there is a great need to a methodology able to optimise the hardening programme investments. This scheme could potentially save a large amount of money, as well as...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, wireless communications for multimedia purposes is widely spreaded especially due to video communication demands. One of important considerations in this area is to receive video stream with less effect of errors related to transition channel as well as optimal utilization of bandwidth. The H.264 is exploited as the most efficient video compression standard and because of its predictive nature of encoder and decoder, it is very sensitive to error propagation, so error resilient technics should be applied along with the video compression to reduce the visual impacts of error occurrence and propagation. In this thesis existing methods of video error resilience, video quality measures...
Resilience Pattern in Neural Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis the resilience of a neural network is examined under structural perturbation. The network consists of Spiking neurons with specific dynamics or they are binary neurons and the network is non-spiking. Neural network is a multi-dimensional and multi-stable system therefore we can map their dynamical equations to effective one-dimensional equation with one parameter which shows the environmental conditions. The resilience of the system is evaluated with respect to changes in weights and edges of the network and the the resilience pattern of the system is obtained. Finally, the recovery and control methods are briefly discussed
A Framework to Assess Effect of Interdependent Infrastructures' Disruption on Operation of Hospital during Natural Disasters
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haj Kazem Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In earthquake-prone communities, the post-earthquake functionality of hospitals is crucial. Hospitals can dramatically reduce earthquake casualties if they can remain functional and retain service continuity. A variety of earthquake-induced problems such as damage to hospital components, unavailability of medical staff, disruption in medicine supply, and failure of supporting infrastructure systems can negatively affect the functionality of a hospital. Hospital administrators and facility managers require appropriate tools to assess the effect of these problems on hospital functionality. This research presents a probabilistic framework to assess the functionality of hospitals following...
Hardening Strategies for Enhancing the Resilience of Electrical Distribution Networks against Earthquake
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
During natural disasters, especially an earthquake the distribution systems operation is severely affected and interrupted by facing many failures. More than 80% of these outages are due to failures in distribution Systems. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the resilience of the distribution systems (DSs) against these disasters. However, nowadays, due to limitation of resources for investment in these networks, only the most efficient measures should be implemented. In this work, studying the recent earthquakes in different countries, we have tried to identify the fundamental causes of failure of important network equipment, including distribution substations equipment and network...

Generalization of Auxiliary Input Leakage Model for Public-Key Cryptosystems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khazaei, Shahram (Supervisor)
Abstract
Side channel attacks, where an attacker learns some physical information about the state of a device, are one of the ways in which cryptographic schemes are broken in practice. leakage resilient ryptography addressed this issue at a higher abstraction level, proposing models capturing such attacks. Auxiliary Input is one of these models. In this thesis, we study public-key encryption schemes in this model of leakage. we also propose a method to consider this leakage continuously (i.e., not just one observation of the adversary). at the end, we consider the leakage from both the secret key owner and the encryptor. This odel captures a wider class of side-channel attacks
Smart Grid Planning Considering Renewables and Demand Response Programs
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The concept of smart grid to realize the triple goals of economy, reliability and environmental improvements has taken advantage of modern equipment and new structures. Beside these goals smart grids seek to increase the level of penetration of renewable resources for environmental improvement. On the other hand, increase in dispersed products and problems resulting from increasing these non-dispatchable resources thus led the researches to design a new structure called microgrid. Microgrid improves the reliability of these resources and facilities their uses. But uncertainty and intermittency in producing renewable energy resources are among the main challenges facing these microgrids....
Revision, Modification, Fabrication, and Examining the Behavior of Ribbed Bracing System (RBS)under Test
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
Abstract
As a result of numerous earthquakes happened in recent decades, widespread failures were observed in conventional braced frames, which were mostly created due to buckling of the braces under compression. To find a solution to overcome this problem, Ribbed Bracing System (RBS) was developed by Golafshani et al. in 2004. In this study, continuing the experimental investigation and considering the previous outcomes, the RBS bracing was redesigned based on some modifications. Then, two half-scale RBS braces with pinned frames were constructed and tested under cyclic loading. RBS systems were utilized in two options, CC-RBS and SC-RBS, in X configuration, the first of which was constantly...
A Framework to Evaluate the Resilience of Hospitals
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the aftermath of earthquakes, hospitals serve the critical role of treating casualties and reducing mortalities and severe injuries. A hospital must be resilient to play its role correctly after the earthquake. A resilient hospital is able to maintain its functionality at an acceptable level and provide service to the injured. In order to enhance the resilience of a hospital, an appropriate framework is needed to evaluate the hospital resilience and determines the impact of modification actions. This framework should characterize the serviceability of a hospital in terms of an appropriate metric. In this framework, the behavior of a given hospital building in the event of an earthquake as...
Developing a Comprehensive Framework for Improving Resilience Level of Datacenters Based on the Concept of Energy Microgrids
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Moieni Aghtaie, Moein (Supervisor) ; Aeen, Morteza (Supervisor)
Abstract
The constant and proper functioning of data center infrastructures is considered a vital element in the modern processing of data and information. Failure in the electricity supply system is the key reason for workload processing stalls in data centers. Energy supply systems, therefore, need to be highly reliable in terms of adequacy and security. Nonetheless, data centers tend to become volatile and, to some degree, unresponsive in the face of a multitude of such errors occurring simultaneously which in turn could lead to higher rates of processing interruptions. Recent years have witnessed an increase in the number of natural occurrences with high impact and low probability (a.k.a., HILP...
