    Abstract
Chronic, non-healing wounds place a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems, resulting in impaired mobility, limb amputation, or even death. Chronic wounds result from a disruption in the highly orchestrated cascade of events involved in wound closure. Significant advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic wounds have resulted in the development of drugs designed to target different aspects of the impaired processes. However, the hostility of the wound environment rich in degradative enzymes and its elevated pH, combined with differences in the time scales of different physiological processes involved in tissue regeneration require the use of effective drug...

    Abstract
For thousands of years, plants and their products have been used as the mainstay of medicinal therapy. In recent years, besides attempts to isolate the active ingredients of medicinal plants, other new applications of plant products, such as their use to prepare drug delivery vehicles, have been discovered. Nanobiotechnology is a branch of pharmacology that can provide new approaches for drug delivery by the preparation of biocompatible carrier nanoparticles (NPs). In this article, we review recent studies with four important plant proteins that have been used as carriers for targeted delivery of drugs and genes. Zein is a water-insoluble protein from maize; Gliadin is a 70% alcohol-soluble...

    Abstract
According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, an estimated 265,000 deaths still occur every year as a direct result of burn injuries. A widespread range of these deaths induced by burn wound happens in low- and middle-income countries, where survivors face a lifetime of morbidity. Most of the deaths occur due to infections when a high percentage of the external regions of the body area is affected. Microbial nutrient availability, skin barrier disruption, and vascular supply destruction in burn injuries as well as systemic immunosuppression are important parameters that cause burns to be susceptible to infections. Topical antimicrobials and dressings are generally...

    Abstract
Rings are widely used in mechanical equipment, and their fitness may undergo some damage under severe vibration. In these structures, functionally graded rings can be used to optimize the resistance, energy consumption, and fitness. Due to their complexity, the finite-element analysis may be implemented using special elements. Enhancement of accuracy and minimization of time consumption play an important role in the analysis of these rings. In this study, a new cylindrical superelement for the FGM rings is designed and implemented to facilitate the vibration analysis of the rings. The power-law distribution is used for the modeling of the FGM rings in the thickness direction. Natural...

    Abstract
As Gregory Bateson, the British social scientists, once said "You can't live without an eraser", the process of learning is not a unidirectional way toward accumulation of knowledge, rather, organizations should critically evaluate the value of their knowledge and if necessary, actively forget no-longer-useful knowledge. A brief review of related literature shows that the concept of knowledge active forgetting (KAF) is a crucial aspect of organizational learning and knowledge management. However, many aspects of this topic deserve more attention by researchers. The main gap in the literature seems to be related to the linkage between peculiar aspects of knowledge (such as stickiness, context...

A new approach to find the optimal solution for base stock policies

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 9, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 789-793 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Shenas, N. Y ; Eshraghniaye Jahromi, A ; Modarres, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this study, the cost function of the defined system is derived first. Then, we prove this function is convex in the system's base stock level. Finally, based on the convexity of the cost function, the optimal solution for the base stock model is determined. For demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method, we resort to solving an example. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information

    Abstract
The ever increasing growth of smart phones and their applications have led to the emergence of various platforms, i.e. online stores, for distributing them among users and providing a way for customers and developers to interact with each other. In recent years, these stores have turned into an important form of software repositories, which brought out new challenges for researchers. One of these challenges is the task of searching for suitable applications and providing simple access to them for users. Pervious work has focused on the relationships between users and applications’ contents. Among the shortcomings of these approaches, is not considering users’ reviews of applications and what...

    Abstract
Epoxy resins have been used as structural materials since the late 1940s. Despite their desirable properties such as high strength, excellent creep resistance, and good adhesion, they suffer from low fracture energy. Rubber modification as a major toughening approach to overcome the inherent brittleness of epoxy polymers was introduced during the early 1970s. Since then, a large number of investigations have been conducted to elucidate different aspects of rubber-toughened epoxies. The present work is a critical review of the field focusing on the important parameters affecting rubber-toughening. The studies reviewed are classified in five categories including roles of matrix ductility,...

A branch and bound algorithm for the weighted earliness-tardiness project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 E , 2009 , Pages 55-64 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Afshar Nadjafi, B ; Shadrokh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, an exact solution procedure is presented for the Weighted Earliness-Tardiness Project Scheduling Problem (WETPSP) with Generalized Precedence Relations (WETPSP-GPR), taking into account the time value of money (WETPSPDC-GPR) and a fixed deadline for the project. The WETPSP-GPR extends the WETPSP to arbitrary minimal and maximal time-lags between the starting and completion times of activities. We present a new depth-first Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithm for an extended form of the problem, in which the time value of money is taken into account by discounting cash flows, and minimum, as well as maximum, time-lags between different activities may be given. The algorithm is...

    Abstract
Opinions and experiences of others give us valuable information in making decisions. Recently, with the expansion of using social networks and websites, people can easily share their opinions about miscellaneous things. This huge amount of information cannot be analyzed by individuals, so a system that automatically analyzes opinions is needed. This need invokes new field of research that is called opinion mining. User’s viewpoints could change during the time, and this is an important issue for companies. One of the most challenging sub-problems of opinion mining is model-based opinion mining, which aims to model the generation of words by modeling their probabilities. In this thesis, we...

    Abstract
Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data....

    Abstract
Signal generation techniques for visual detection of analytes have received a great deal of attention in various sensing fields. These approaches are considered to be advantageous when instrumentation cannot be employed, such as for on-site assays, point-of-care tests, and he althcare diagnostics in resource-constrained areas. Amongst various visual detection approaches explored for non-invasive quantitative measurements, ratiometric fluorescence sensing has received particular attention as a potential method to overcome the limitations of intensity-based probes. This technique relies on changes in the intensity of two or more emission bands (induced by an analyte), resulting in an effective...

Inactivation methods for whole influenza vaccine production

    , Article Reviews in Medical Virology ; Volume 29, Issue 6 , 2019 ; 10529276 (ISSN) Sabbaghi, A ; Miri, S. M ; Keshavarz, M ; Zargar, M ; Ghaemi, A ; Sharif University of Technology]

    Abstract
Despite tremendous efforts toward vaccination, influenza remains an ongoing global threat. The induction of strain-specific neutralizing antibody responses is a common phenomenon during vaccination with the current inactivated influenza vaccines, so the protective effect of these vaccines is mostly strain-specific. There is an essential need for the development of next-generation vaccines, with a broad range of immunogenicity against antigenically drifted or shifted influenza viruses. Here, we evaluate the potential of whole inactivated vaccines, based on chemical and physical methods, as well as new approaches to generate cross-protective immune responses. We also consider the mechanisms by...

    Abstract
As one of the most important additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, laser metal deposition (LMD) has been extensively studied specially during the last few years. Similar to other AM techniques, the quality of LMD parts is highly dependent on the processing parameters that need to be optimized so as to obtain geometrically accurate parts as well as favorable microstructures and, thus, mechanical properties. The present review paper therefore aims to present a critical analysis and overview of the relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties of LMD components made from the Ti–6Al–4V alloy. Moreover, we discuss the applications of LMD parts in the...
