    Abstract
Na0.3WO3 1D nanostructure forms (nanorods and nanobelts) were grown by a solid-liquid-solid mechanism from a 40 nm sputtered tungsten film deposited on a soda-lime substrate and annealed at 700 °C in a tubular furnace in N2 ambient. The morphology, structure, composition and chemical state of the prepared nanostructures were characterized by SEM, XRD, TEM, SAED and XPS measurements. The Na0.3WO3 1D nanostructures were found to have a cubic crystalline structure and grown along the [0 0 1] direction. The nanorods are a few micrometres in length and about 50 nm in diameter. The field-emission application of the prepared samples at different distances between the cathode and the anode was...

Solvent effects on the reaction rate and selectivity of synchronous heterogeneous hydrogenation of cyclohexene and acetone in ionic liquid/alcohols mixtures

    , Article Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical ; Volume 306, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 11-16 ; 13811169 (ISSN) Khodadadi Moghaddam, M ; Habibi Yangjeh, A ; Gholami, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Synchronous heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of cyclohexene and acetone, catalyzed by Pt/Al2O3, was carried out in solutions of 2-hydroxy ethylammonium formate (a room temperature ionic liquid, RTIL) with ethanol and propan-1-ol at 25 °C. Rate constants and selectivity of the reaction (relative to cyclohexene hydrogenation) increase with mole fraction of the ionic liquid (IL). The reactants tendency to the catalyst surface increases by addition of the ionic liquid and thus the reaction rate increases, especially for cyclohexene hydrogenation. Consequently the selectivity to cyclohexene hydrogenation was increased. Single-parameter correlations of log k vs. π* (dipolarity/polarizibility)...

    Abstract
NiTiHf thin films with varying hafnium contents up to 28.7at% were fabricated using simultaneous sputter deposition from separate Ni, Ti, and Hf targets onto unheated substrates. The required film composition was achieved by adjusting the power ratio to the targets. The as-deposited films were amorphous; and post deposition annealing was performed at 550°C, slightly above their crystallization temperatures. The crystallization temperature of the films varied as a function of Hf concentration, and was as high as 520°C at a Hf content of 28.7at%. 2μm thick crystallized films with I0at% or greater Hf were martensitic at room temperature. DSC analysis demonstrated that above 10at%Hf additions...

    Abstract
In this paper, we have studied the effect of annealing under slightly oxidizing ambient (N2 + O2) on the structural and electrical characteristics of a limited number of silicon nanoparticles embedded in an ultra-thin SiO2 layer. These nanoparticles were synthesized by ultra-low energy (1 keV) ion implantation and annealing. Material characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fresnel imaging and spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) have been used to evaluate the effects of oxidation on structural characteristics of nanocrystal layer. Electrical transport characteristics have been measured on less than one hundred nanoparticles by...

Room-temperature quantum effect in silicon nanoparticles obtained by low-energy ion implantation and embedded in a nanometer scale capacitor

    , Article Applied Physics Letters ; Volume 86, Issue 16 , 2005 , Pages 1-3 ; 00036951 (ISSN) Shalchian, M ; Grisolia, J ; Assayag, G. B ; Coffin, H ; Atarodi, S. M ; Claverie, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, we present the room-temperature current-voltage characteristics of a nanometer scale (100×100 nm2) metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor containing few (less than 100) silicon nanoparticles. The layer of silicon nanoparticles is synthesized within the oxide of this capacitor by ultra low-energy ion implantation and annealing. Current fluctuations in the form of discrete current steps and sharp peaks appeared in the static and dynamic I (V) characteristics of the capacitor. These features have been associated to quantized charging and discharging of the nanoparticles and the resulting Coulomb interaction to the tunneling current. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

    Abstract
A uniformly distributed ZnO nanowire array has been grown on silicon (100) substrates by catalyst-free chemical vapor transport and condensation. The effect of growth conditions including source heating temperature, substrate temperature, and gas flow rate on growth properties of ZnO nanowire arrays are studied. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and room temperature photoluminescence are employed to study the structural features and optical properties of the samples. The results show a correlation among experimental growth parameters. There is a zone for substrate temperature, by controlling gas flow rate, that uniformly distributed and well aligned ZnO nanowire arrays can be...

    Abstract
CeO 2-TiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel process using 2-hydroxylethylammonium formate as room-temperature ionic liquid and calcined at different temperatures (500-700°C). CeO 2-TiO 2-graphene nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide with CeO 2-TiO 2 nanoparticles in aqueous solution of ethanol. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transformed infrared techniques. The results demonstrate that the room-temperature ionic liquid inhibits the anatase-rutile phase transformation. This effect was promoted by addition of CeO 2 to TiO 2....

Facile synthesis of monodisperse thermally immiscible Ag-Ni alloy nanoparticles at room temperature

    , Article Bulletin of Materials Science ; Vol. 37, issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 1447-1452 Tabatabaei, S ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ag and Ni are immiscible, mainly due to their large lattice mismatch. This paper reports on their nanoscale formation of solid solution at room temperature by simple reduction reactions which lead to the amorphous Ag-Ni alloy nanoparticles (ANPs) with mono-disperse distribution. Microscopic and spectroscopic studies confirmed dependence of the alloy composition on size of nanoparticles. In the presence of different ligands such as sodium citrate, polyvinyl alcohol and potassium carbonate a mixture of silver oxide and Ag-Ni ANPs was achieved. Stoichiometry of the Ag-Ni ANPs was also found to be strongly dependent on ligands of the reduction reaction and further study shows without any ligand...

    Abstract
Tungsten oxide thin films (deposited by thermal evaporation or sol gel method) were used for photocatalytic reduction of graphene oxide (GO) platelets (synthesized through a chemical exfoliation method) on surface of the films under UV or visible light of the environment, in the absence of any aqueous ambient at room temperature. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique was employed to characterize surface morphology of the GO sheets and the tungsten oxide films. Moreover, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), chemical state of the tungsten oxide films and the photocatalytic reduction of the GO platelets were quantitatively investigated. The better performance of the sol-gel tungsten...

    Abstract
In this work, a novel heterogeneous organocatalyst was synthesized by immobilization of hydroxide ions on the modified salep as a natural polymer. Because of the grafting of ionic polymer chains onto the salep backbone, catalyst has high loading level of hydroxide ions (3.01 mmol/g). The resulting catalyst shows excellent activity in the synthesis of 4H-benzo[b]pyrans in water at room temperature in short reaction times. The present catalyst and protocol represent a simple, ecologically safe and cost-effective route to synthesize 4H-benzo[b]pyrans with high product yield, as well as easy catalyst recycling

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 45 , 2013 , Pages 279-285 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Azadi, M ; Shirazabad, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In the present paper, the heat treatment effect on A356.0, a cast aluminum alloy which has been widely used in diesel engine cylinder heads, is investigated under out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue and low cycle fatigue (at different temperatures) loadings. A typical heat treatment is applied to the material including 8. h solution at 535 °C, water quench and 3. h ageing at 180 °C. The experimental fatigue results show that the heat treatment process has considerable influence on mechanical and low cycle fatigue behaviors, especially at room temperature, but its effect on thermo-mechanical fatigue lifetime is not significant. The improvement in the strength can be explained by the...

Then, both AA6061 and the composite were aged at three different temperatures including room temperature, 170 °C and 240 °C, while mechanical properties during aging were evaluated employing hardness measurements and tensile testing. Moreover, in order to assess the effect of plastic deformation on the kinetics of aging, a series of samples were first deformed by equal-channel angular pressing immediately after solution treatment and then aged in the...

Structural, magnetic, and optical properties of zinc-and copper-substituted nickel ferrite nanocrystals

    Abstract
Ferrite nanocrystals are an interesting material due to their rich physical properties. Here we add nonmagnetic dopants Zn and Cu to nickel ferrite nanocrystals, Ni1-xMxFe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, M = Cu, Zn), and study how relevant properties of the samples are modified accordingly. Basically, these dopings cause a rearrangement of Fe +3 ions into the two preexisting octahedral and tetrahedral sites. In fact, this, we show, induces pertinent magnetic properties of the doped samples. In the case of the Cu-doping, the Jahn-Teller effect also emerges, which we identify through the Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy of the samples. Moreover, we show an increase in the lattice parameters of the...

    Abstract
An experimental study of wear characteristics of electroless Ni-10% P coating sliding against hard AISI 52100 steel pin is investigated. Experiments are carried out at room and 550°C temperatures. Heat treatment effects on tribological behavior of this coating are studied. The wear surface and the microstructure of the coatings are analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion analysis X-ray, and microhardness testing equipment. It is observed that the forming of continuous oxide film on contacting surfaces of pin and disk improves wear resistance and decreases friction coefficient of the Ni-10% P coating. The results indicate that the wear resistance of...

    Abstract
In this study, the effects of stress-assisted heat treatment on the microstructure and phase transformation of a Ti-rich (Ti-49.52 at.% Ni) shape memory alloy were investigated. For this purpose, the alloy was heat treated at temperature of 500 °C for 10 h under applied stresses of 100 and 200 MPa. XRD, TEM, and repeated thermal cycling were employed to study the microstructure and transformation behavior of the heat-treated materials. Room temperature XRD diffractogram of the stress-free heat-treated material showed a weak reflection of austenite (B2), while that for the stress-assisted heat-treated materials had a high intensity implying the presence of residual austenite in the...

The effect of dynamic strain aging on room temperature mechanical properties of high martensite dual phase (HMDP) steel

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 550 , 2012 , Pages 325-332 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Shahriary, M. S ; Koohbor, B ; Ahadi, K ; Ekrami, A ; Khakian Qomi, M ; Izadyar, T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
AISI 4340 steel bars were heated at 900 °C for one hour, annealed at 738 °C for different durations and oil-quenched in order to obtain dual phase steels with different ferrite volume fractions. A 3% prestrain at the temperature range of 150-450 °C was then imposed to the samples, and room temperature tensile tests were carried out, afterwards. Results indicate that the maximum values for both yield and ultimate tensile strength would exist for the samples pre-strained at the temperature range of 250-300 °C. Also, a sudden drop of the ductility was observed at the mentioned temperature range. The observed behavior might be attributed to the occurrence of dynamic strain aging taken place at...

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 116, Issue 17 , 2012 , Pages 9653-9659 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Choobtashani, M ; Ghaderi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Graphene-tungsten oxide composite thin films with sheetlike surface morphology were fabricated and applied in photoinactivation of viruses under visible light irradiation. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it was found that the chemically exfoliated graphene oxide sheets incorporated in the tungsten oxide film reduced through a visible light photocatalytic reduction. In addition, annealing the films at 450 °C in air resulted in formation of W-C and W-O-C bonds to obtain graphene-tungsten oxide composite films. The composite films fabricated by this method showed an excellent visible light photocatalytic performance in photoinactivation of bacteriophage MS2 viruses, as compared to...

The effect of pre-straining at intermediate temperatures on the mechanical behavior of high-bainite dual phase (HBDP) steels

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 543 , May , 2012 , Pages 224-230 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Farnoush, H ; Haghshenas Fatmehsari, D ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
High-bainite dual phase (HBDP) steels with 34. vol.% ferrite were subjected to tensile strains of 1%, 3%, and 5% at intermediate temperatures (150-450. °C). Mechanical behavior of pre-deformed steels was then investigated at room temperature. A maximum value for both yield stress and ultimate tensile strength was observed for pre-deformed steels. A minimum elongation was also found in the same pre-deformed specimens at the range of 250-350. °C. It was found that dynamic strain aging (DSA) plays the major role in mechanical properties of pre-strained HBDP steels. The DSA indicator parameter (DSAP) was introduced to evaluate DSA mechanism. Maxima of DSAP were likewise observed at the range of...
