    Abstract
In this paper, a new structure for the rotor of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is introduced to reduce the machine's torque ripple. The ripple has a considerable effect on the machine start up. At the first section of the paper, analytical expressions for the air gap permeance distribution, the air gap MMF distribution, cogging torque and back EMF are presented. Then, the effects of skewing the rotor loops are analyzed. Finally, the relation between non-skewed quantities and their values in skewed coordinate are introduced

    Abstract
Brushless Doubly fed machines have two stator windings and an especial cage rotor. The main advantage of the machine is higher reliability in compare with DFIGs. Cross coupling is the mechanism, which provides indirect coupling of the two stator windings. In this paper, time and space harmonics in a BDFM are studied to find a criterion for evaluating different rotor designs and better cross coupling, based on the space harmonics. Then the equivalent space and time harmonic circuits are established, using basic equivalent circuit. Finally, the effects of these harmonics on the torque-speed characteristic are studied

    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of the main rotor of an armed helicopter on radar return signal and its modulation condition are considered. After analyzing references and experimental data, this paper proposes a new method based on inherent modulation in main rotor echo. This method is able to enhance the probability of detection. The simulation is performed for both simulated and practical echo signal. Simulation results confirm that our proposed scheme is effective. Moreover, a new domain for distinguishing and measuring the rotation feature of a rotary target is proposed. This paper is based on practical experiments (rotation domain)

    , Article Tribology International ; Volume 152 , 2020 Behzad, M ; Alvandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
During backward rub in a turbomachine, rotor is compelled by frictional forces into a severe precessional sliding motion inside stationary parts such as seals or journal bearings in opposite direction of rotor's rotation. Backward rub occurs with high frequency and high amplitude of vibration and can deteriorates rubbing surfaces just for few moments. This paper presents and investigates the idea of clearance profile alteration from annular form to non-annular 3-lobed form in order to affect the reverse rub's characteristics. For this purpose, a test setup consisting of a lightly damped rotor-stator system is designed and built in SUT's condition-monitoring laboratory for testing the...

    Abstract
Employing Multi-Turn Wound-Rotor (WR) resolvers are suggested for applications that high accuracy and absolute measurement are required, simultaneously. Conventional multi-turn resolvers are consisted of two individual resolvers in a common frame and suffer from high cost and big size that has a loading effect on the driven machine. Those challenges are over-come in proposed structures of recent researches in the price of a complicated winding process in manufacturing where the aim of this paper is laying. To find the best solution, an index is proposed and calculated. All the simulations are done using time-stepping finite element analysis (TSFEA). Then, the prototype of the optimal...

Aerodynamic Analysis of Dual Rotors Using Potential Method and Free Wake Modeling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yeylaghi, Shahab (Author) ; Hejranfar, Kazem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Potential flow solvers simplify the mathematical formulation and achieve efficient solutions. The prediction of aerodynamic of dual rotor systems using computational fluid dynamic methods is difficult task due to the interference effects between the wakes shed from the rotors. In the present work, a free wake vortex lattice method is used to predict the vertical wake and blade loading of dual rotors in hover. In this approach the blades are modeled as flat plates with zero thickness and ring vortices are distributed on the surface of each blade. When the blades rotate, vortices are shed into the wake and freely move with a local velocity induced by the effects of the vortices on the blades...

Analytical and Finite Element Modeling of Rubbing Phenomena in Rotors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alvandi, Mahdi (Author) ; Behzad, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Rotor contact with a stationary element of a rotating machine and the subsequent rubbing at the contact area is a serious malfunction that may lead to the machine’s catastrophic failure. In the past decades, many studies have been done on the rubbing phenomena, its different regimes and its various consequences on the machine performance and safety. However, most of them have used a simple model to investigate the rubbing interaction between the rotor and the stator. This simple model consists of the Jeffcott rotor, as a model for the real rotors, and a rigid annular block surrounding the rotor, as a model for the real stators. The objective of this thesis is to build an algorithm to...

Calculation of core and stray load losses in brushless doubly fed induction generators

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Vol. 61, issue. 7 , 2014 , pp. 3167-3177 ; SSN: 02780046 Gorginpour, H ; Oraee, H ; Abdi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) has substantial benefits, which make it an attractive alternative as a wind generator. However, it suffers from lower efficiency and larger dimensions in comparison with the doubly fed induction generator. A major part of drawbacks arises from undesirable spatial harmonics of air-gap magnetic field. Calculation of core loss is an important issue in optimal design studies to improve the performance characteristics. The iron loss is higher and has a more complex nature in BDFIGs in contrast with conventional machines. Furthermore, additional losses cannot be ignored due to a high level of spatial harmonics distortion. This paper aims to...

    Abstract
In this paper the direct power control methods of doubly fed induction generator in wind turbine applications are studied. In the methods under study, the proper voltage space vector of the rotor side converter is selected using a switching table which is derived from flux position and the difference between the measured and reference stator active and reactive powers. Various simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink software on a DFIG system in order to investigate the dynamic performance and robustness of the proposed control methods against machine internal parameters variations

    Abstract
The notable effeets of time delay aid time discretization on the torque and current ripple amplitude of the direct torque controlled induction motor scheme are investigated. A simply modified torque hysteresis comparator structure is proposed. It minimizes the undesirable effects of the time delay and time discretization on the torque ripple and allows a sensible reduction of torque and current ripple amplitudes and switching frequency in the whole rotor speed range. Numerical simulations and experimental tests have been carried out to validate the proposed torque comparator effect. © 2004 IEEE

A new correlation on the MEXICO experiment using a 3D enhanced blade element momentum technique

    , Article International Journal of Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 33, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 448-460 ; ISSN: 14786451 Mahmoodi, E ; Jafari, A ; Schaffarczyk, A. P ; Keyhani, A ; Mahmoudi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The blade element momentum (BEM) theory is based on the actuator disc (AD) model, which is probably the oldest analytical tool for analysing rotor performance. The BEM codes have very short processing times and high reliability. The problems of the analytical codes are well known to the researchers: the impossibility of describing inside the one-dimensional code the three-dimensional (3D) radial flows along the span-wise direction. In this work, the authors show how the 3D centrifugal pumping affects the BEM calculations of a wind turbine rotor. Actually to ascertain the accuracy of the analytical codes, the results are compared with rotor performance, blade loads and particle image...

Compensation of transient error in sensorless alternating carrier injection scheme

    , Article IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference) ; 2012 , Pages 1702-1706 ; 9781467324212 (ISBN) Ghazimoghadam, M. A ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
High frequency (HF) carrier injection schemes can estimate rotor position in a wide speed range. In these methods, first a HF voltage is injected to stator windings and then the corresponding HF current is exploited to estimate the position of rotor using a closed loop tracking observer. The tracking observer is capable to track rotor saliency with no steady state error. However when the motor starts to move or whenever the rotor speed changes a transient error appears. In this paper a new solution is proposed to compensate the transient error in estimation of rotor position

    Abstract
Nowadays position sensors are increasingly used in many applications. One of the most commonly used sensors are resolvers. There are different types of resolvers including Wound Rotor (WR) resolvers, Variable Air-gap Length Variable Reluctance (VAGL-VR) resolvers, and Sinusoidal Rotor Variable Reluctance (SR-VR) resolvers. Regardless of the resolvers’ configurations, including linear, cylindrical and disk type, finite element analysis (FEA) is inseparable part of design and performance evaluation of these magnetic sensors. The scope of this study is to discuss challenges in the FEA of resolvers. The influence of mesh quality, time steps, stop time, excitation methods including volt-age...

    Abstract
In this paper an integrated core, high reliability, linear-rotational resolver with a simple slotless configuration is proposed. The moving part of the proposed resolver has only one helical winding. While, its stator needs at least two individual windings to be able to determine the linear and angular position in simultaneous linear and rotational, helical, motions. Three different configurations are proposed for the stator's windings: (1) helical and horizontally skewed winding (2) helical and vertically skewed winding (3) horizontally and vertically skewed windings. The influence of the mentioned configurations is discussed in the terms of sensor's accuracy in independent and simultaneous...

    Abstract
This paper describes a novel Direct Torque Control (DTC) method for adjustable speed Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) drives which is supplied by a two-level Space Vector Modulation (SVM) voltage source inverter (DTC-SVM) in the rotor circuit. The inverter reference voltage vector is obtained by using input-output feedback linearization control and a DFIM model in the stator a-b axes reference frame with stator currents and rotor fluxes as state variables. Moreover, to make this nonlinear controller stable and robust to most varying electrical parameter uncertainties, a two layer recurrent Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to estimate a certain function which shows the machine...

    Abstract
This paper presents how can teach complicated problems in electrical engineering subjects (electrical machines) by using simulators such as MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation of direct vector control of induction machine (IM) drive on the rotor flux direction with composite model flux observer can improve electrical machine teaching-learning procedure for graduated and under graduated levels. In the indirect vector control of IM, current reference values are used for estimation angle of the rotor flux space vector (ARFSV), however using current reference values instead of current real values can decrease accuracy of ARFSV. In the direct vector control, current real values (current feedback)...

Transient performance improvement of wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators using nonlinear control strategy

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 514-525 ; 08858969 (ISSN) Rahimi, M ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper first discusses dynamic characteristics of wind turbines with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). Rotor back electromotive force (EMF) voltages in DFIG reflect the effects of stator dynamics on rotor current dynamics, and have an important role on rotor inrush current during the generator voltage dip. Compensation of these voltages can improve DFIG ride-through capability and limit the rotor current transients. It is found that the electrical dynamics of the DFIG are in nonminimum phase for certain operating conditions. Also, it is shown that the dynamics of DFIG, under compensation of rotor back EMF and grid voltages, behave as a partially linearizable system containing...

Winding function model for predicting performance of 2-DOF wound rotor resolver

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification ; Volume 8, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 2062-2069 ; 23327782 (ISSN) Zare, F ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) electrical machines require position sensors for their motion control. In comparison with using two independent sensors, using a 2-DOF sensor enhances the closed-loop control system's performance. However, due to the 3-D structure of the 2-DOF sensor, its performance evaluation needs 3-D analysis. Also, due to helical motion the accuracy deterioration of the sensor, under mechanical faults needs more attention. Although the finite element method (FEM) is the best way to simulate such sensors, most of the commercial packages for transient finite element simulations are not able to consider two separate motions simultaneously. Furthermore, FEM has a high...
