Abstract
The problem of finding the optimal node density for reconstructing a stochastic signal from its noisy samples in sensor networks is considered. The signal could be nonstationary and nonbandlimited. A weight is assigned to each location that indicates the relative importance of the signal at that location. It is shown that when the number of samples is very large, the optimal density of the samples at each location is proportional to the square root of the weight associated to that location
SNR Improvement in A/D Converters Using Iterative Algorithm
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Converting analog signal to digital one is one of the most important issues in signal processing which can be done by using analog to digital converter (A/D). In the first part of this thesis, sigma delta converters based on minimum support filter are investigated. Then, we will show that iterative algorithm can be used in order to improve the performance of the overall system significantly. Asynchronous converters can be utilized for the sake of decreasing power in the process of analog to digital converting. In these converters, a few numbers of samples will be taken from the regions which signal has high autocorrelation. In other words, samples in the asynchronous converters have more...
The Effect of Cementation by Lime on Collapsible Soils Behavior Using Suction Controlled Oedometer Device Case Study: Loess of Gorgan
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Collapsible soils such as loess, which are naturally found unsaturated, are kind of problematic soils that undergo sudden and noticeable decrease in volume under increasing stress at constant moisture, increasing moisture at constant stress, or increase in both of them. This kind of soil can be found in some parts of Iran such as plain of Gorgan. To fulfill the main purpose of this study, evaluating the effect of cementation on collapse behavior of loess of Gorgan, some oedometer tests under controlled matric suction were performed on reconstituted samples without and with lime. The lime was added for stabilizing of the collapsible materials and the amount was chosen to be %3 by weight of...

, Article Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems ; Aug , 2014 , p. 841-844 ; Hajsadeghi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
This paper presents a low power SAR ADC utilizing pipelining to increase the resolution up to 12 bits while maintaining a high speed sampling rate. Novel system level modifications and also new comparator architecture are proposed to optimize the power consumption. The ADC is designed and simulated in 0.18um CMOS technology by 1.2v supply voltage consuming 4.5mW power at 40MS/s sampling rate. The results indicates an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 11.04 bit and a challenging FOM of 54.9 fj/conversion which verifies the competence of proposed method
Economic design of variable sampling interval X -bar control charts for monitoring correlated non normal samples
, Article Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods ; Volume 42, Issue 18 , 2013 , Pages 2639-2658 ; 03610926 (ISSN) ; Gazaneh, F. M ; Toosheghanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Recent studies have shown the X-bar control chart with variable sampling interval detects shifts in the process mean faster than the traditional X-bar chart. These studies are usually based on the assumption that the process data are independently and normally distributed. However, many situations in practice violate these assumptions. In this study, a methodology is developed to economically design a variable sampling interval X-bar control chart that takes into consideration correlated non normal sample data. An example is provided to illustrate the solution procedure. A sensitivity analysis on the input parameters (i.e., the cost and the process parameters) is performed taking into...
A new acceptance sampling policy based on number of successive conforming items
, Article Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods ; Volume 42, Issue 8 , Apr , 2013 , Pages 1542-1552 ; 03610926 (ISSN) ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In an acceptance-sampling plan, where items of an incoming batch of products are inspected one by one, if the number of conforming items between successive non conforming items falls below a lower control threshold, the batch is rejected. If it falls above an upper control threshold, the batch is accepted, and if it lies within the thresholds then the process of inspecting the items continues. The purpose of this article is to develop an optimization model to determine the optimum values of the thresholds such that constraints on the probability of Type I and Type II errors are satisfied. This article starts by developing a Markovian model to derive the expected total cost of the inspection...

Abstract
Consider a collection of files, each of which is a sequence of letters. One of these files is randomly chosen and a random subsequence of the file is revealed. This random subsequence can be the result of a random sampling of the file. The goal is to recover the identity of the file, assuming a simple greedy matching algorithm to search the file collection. We study the fundamental limits on the maximum size of the file collection for reliable recovery in terms of the length of the random subsequence. The sequence of each file is assumed to follow a hidden Markov model (HMM), which is a common model for many data structures such as voice or DNA sequences. The connection between this problem...

Abstract
Standard sparse decomposition (with applications in many different areas including compressive sampling) amounts to finding the minimum ℓ 0-norm solution of an underdetermined system of linear equations. In this decomposition, all atoms are treated 'uniformly' for being included or not in the decomposition. However, one may wish to weigh more or less certain atoms, or, assign higher costs to some other atoms to be included in the decomposition. This can happen for example when there is prior information available on each atom. This motivates generalizing the notion of minimal ℓ 0-norm solution to that of minimal weighted ℓ 0-norm solution. On the other hand, relaxing weighted ℓ 0-norm via...

Abstract
A 1.8V, 10-Bit, 40-MS/s Pipeline analog-to-digital converter designed using 0.18-μmCMOS technology is presented. The new structure of the A/D converter is based on double sampling and averaging techniques. By the first technique, all the stage amplifiers are active at the both sampling and holding cycles. Averaging as the second technique minimizes the capacitance mismatch and exchanges the priority of input-referred noise and capacitance mismatch in the selection of the stage caps. The converter achieved a peak spurious-free- dynamic-range of 61 dB, maximum differential nonlinearity 0.5 of least significant bit (LSB), maximum integral linearity of 0.9 LSB, and power consumption of 5mW....

Abstract
Accurate monthly electricity consumption forecasting (ECF) can help retailers enhance the profitability in deregulated electricity markets. Most current methods use monthly load data to perform monthly ECF, which usually produces large errors due to insufficient training samples. A few methods try to use fine-grained smart-meter data (e.g., hourly data) to increase training samples. However, such methods still exhibit low accuracy due to the increase in forecasting steps. © 1975-2012 IEEE

An Interior Needle Electropolymerized Pyrrole-Based Coating for Headspace Solid-Phase Dynamic Extraction of Chlorophenols
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, the inside needle capillary adsorption trap (INCAT) technique as a solventless sample preparation approach and alternative extraction method derived from SPME is gaining rising attentions. The INCAT and needle-trap devices are inexpensive, robust, reusable, and are applicable for sampling and analyzing suitable organic compounds from many different sample matrices. Compared to the fragile silica-based SPME fiber, the needle device is nearly impossible to break mechanically. In addition, the extraction medium possesses quite a large extraction phase volume and a powerful preconcentration capability. Similar to SPME, needle-like devices are particularly convenient for automation and...
Wireless optical CDMA lAN: digital design concepts [electronic resource]
, Article IEEE Transaction on Communication ; Vol. 56, No. 12, PP. 2145-2155, December 2008 ; Matinfar, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper we study and present an in-depth analysis on the operability and the viability of a typical wireless optical CDMA (OCDMA) local area network. Three receiver structures for OCDMA systems, using optical orthogonal codes (OOC) with minimum auto and cross-correlations as signature sequence, namely, correlation, correlation with hard-limiter, and chip-level detection are studied and proposed for such a network. For the synchronization circuit design the performance of two algorithms for OOC based OCDMA networks, namely, simple serial-search and multiple-shift in the context of wireless OCDMA LAN are studied. Furthermore, we study a synchronization method based on matched filtering...
A metal-organic framework sustained by a nanosized Ag12 cuboctahedral node for solid-phase extraction of ultra traces of lead(II) ions
, Article Microchimica Acta ; Vol. 181, issue. 9-10 , 2014 , pp. 999-1007 ; ISSN: 0026-3672 ; Ghanbarpour, A ; Behbahani, M ; Bagheri, S ; Bagheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
We show that a metal-organic framework (MOF) sustained by a nanosized Ag12 cuboctahedral node can be applied to selectively extract traces of lead(II) ion from environmental water samples. The MOF was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction. The effects of pH value, flow rates, of type, concentration and volume of the eluent, of break-through volume and potentially interfering ions on the separation and determination of lead were evaluated. Following desorption with EDTA, Pb(II) was quantified by FAAS. The use of the MOF results in excellent analytical figures of merit including an analytical range from 2...
Sampling efficiency in Monte Carlo based uncertainty propagation strategies: Application in seawater intrusion simulations
, Article Advances in Water Resources ; Vol. 67, issue , 2014 , pp. 46-64 ; Ataie-Ashtiani, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The implementation of Monte Carlo simulations (MCSs) for the propagation of uncertainty in real-world seawater intrusion (SWI) numerical models often becomes computationally prohibitive due to the large number of deterministic solves needed to achieve an acceptable level of accuracy. Previous studies have mostly relied on parallelization and grid computing to decrease the computational time of MCSs. However, another approach which has received less attention in the literature is to decrease the number of deterministic simulations by using more efficient sampling strategies. Sampling efficiency is a measure of the optimality of a sampling strategy. A more efficient sampling strategy requires...
Economic design of VSI X̄ control chart with correlated non-normal data under multiple assignable causes
, Article Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation ; Volume 83, Issue 7 , Jan , 2013 , Pages 1279-1300 ; 00949655 (ISSN) ; Toosheghanian, M ; Gazaneh, F. M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
It has been recently revealed that the Shewhart control charts with variable sampling interval (VSI) perform better than the traditional Shewhart chart with the fixed sampling interval in detecting shifts in the process. In most of these research works, the normality and independency of the process data or measurements are assumed and that the process is subjected to only one assignable cause. While, in practice, these assumptions usually do not hold, some recent studies are focused on working with only one or two of these violations. In this paper, the situation in which the process data are correlated and follow a non-normal distribution and that there is multiplicity of assignable causes...

Abstract
The observation of a new b baryon via its strong decay into Ξb-π + (plus charge conjugates) is reported. The measurement uses a data sample of pp collisions at √s=7TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3fb -1. The known Ξb- baryon is reconstructed via the decay chain Ξb-→J/ψΞ -→μ +μ -Λ0π -, with Λ0→pπ -. A peak is observed in the distribution of the difference between the mass of the Ξb-π + system and the sum of the masses of the Ξb- and π +, with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. The mass difference of the peak is 14.84±0.74(stat)±0.28(syst)MeV. The new state most likely corresponds to the JP=3/2 + companion of the Ξ b

Abstract
A search for the rare decays Bs0→μ+μ- and B0→μ+μ- is performed in pp collisions at √s=7TeV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.14fb-1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In both cases, the number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with expectations from background and standard-model signal predictions. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(Bs0→μ +μ-)<1.9×10-8 and B(B0→μ+μ-)<4.6×10-9, at 95% confidence level

Abstract
Experimental design of directly suspended droplet liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction has been used to determine residue of 2,4-D, in environmental water samples. A free suspended droplet of 5.5 μL of receiving phase is delivered to the top-center position of 1-Octanol, which is an immiscible organic solvent, floating on the top of a 2.5 mL aqueous sample while being agitated by a stirring bar to create a mild vortex at the center of the vial. Central composite rotatable design has been used for studying the effect of the parameters, the factors interacting with each other and finding the optimum condition. The chromatographic separation was accomplished on a shim-Pak C18 column using a...

Abstract
The amount of rippling in graphene sheets is related to the interactions with the substrate or with the suspending structure. Here, we report on an irreversibility in the response to forces that act on suspended graphene sheets. This may explain why one always observes a ripple structure on suspended graphene. We show that a compression-relaxation mechanism produces static ripples on graphene sheets and determine a peculiar temperature Tc, such that for T
