    Abstract
In recent years, community Q&A websites have attracted many users and have become reliable sources among experts from various fields. These platforms have specific rules to maintain their content quality in addition to general user agreements. Due to the vast expanse of these systems in terms of the number of users and posts, manual checking and verification of new contents by the administrators and official moderators are not feasible, and these systems require scalable solutions. In major Q&A networks, the current strategy is to use crowdsourcing with reliance on reporting systems. This strategy has serious problems, including the slow handling of violations, the loss of new and...

    Abstract
Data center performance is affected by three main factors; bandwidth, latency, and reliability of intra-data center interconnection network. Bandwidth and latency are definitely improved by adopting optical technology for intra-data center communication, but fault tolerance of the corresponding optical networks has been raised less. Recently, we introduced two Torus-based, all-optical, and non-blocking networks, i.e. O-TF and O-FTF, addressing reliability of optical networks, and now, in this paper, to address the scalability problem, we propose a novel Optical Clos-based architecture which reduces minimum number of required wavelength channels, as well as, the switch size in each node....

    Introduction to non-volatile memory technologies

    Abstract
Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) has been the leading main memory technology during the last four decades. In deep submicron regime, however, scaling DRAM comes with several challenges caused by charge leakage and imprecise charge placement. Phase Change Memory (PCM) technology is known as one of the most promising technologies to replace DRAM. Compared to competitive non-volatile memories like NAND Flash, Spin Transfer Torque random-access memory (STT-RAM), Magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM), PCM benefits from best attributes of fast random access, negligible leakage energy, superior scalability, high density, and operating in both Single-level Cell (SLC) and Multilevel Cell...

Design for scalability in enterprise SSDs

    , Article Parallel Architectures and Compilation Techniques - Conference Proceedings, PACT ; 24-27 August , 2014 , p. 417-429 ; ISSN: 1089795X ; ISBN: 9781450328098 Tavakkol, A ; Arjomand, M ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Solid State Drives (SSDs) have recently emerged as a high speed random access alternative to classical magnetic disks. To date, SSD designs have been largely based on multi-channel bus architecture that confronts serious scalability problems in high-end enterprise SSDs with dozens of flash memory chips and a gigabyte host interface. This forces the community to rapidly change the bus-based inter-flash standards to respond to ever increasing application demands. In this paper, we first give a deep look at how different flash parameters and SSD internal designs affect the actual performance and scalability of the conventional architecture. Our experiments show that SSD performance improvement...

Temperature control in three-network on chips using task migration

    , Article IET Computers and Digital Techniques ; Vol. 7, issue. 6 , November , 2013 , pp. 274-281 ; 1751-861X (online) Hassanpour, N ; Hessabi, H ; Hamedani, P. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Combination of three-dimensional (3D) IC technology and network on chip (NoC) is an effective solution to increase system scalability and also alleviate the interconnect problem in large-scale integrated circuits. However, because of the increased power density in 3D NoC systems and the destructive effect of high temperatures on chip reliability, applying thermal management solutions becomes crucial in such circuits. In this study, the authors propose a runtime distributed migration algorithm based on game theory to balance the heat dissipation among processing elements (PEs) in a 3D NoC chip multiprocessor. The objective of this algorithm is to minimise the 3D NoC system's peak temperature,...

    Abstract
The plausibility of embedding cycles of different lengths in the graphs of a network (known as the pancyclicity property) has important applications in interconnection networks, parallel processing systems, and the implementation of a number of either computational or graph problems such as those used for finding storage schemes of logical data structures, layout of circuits in VLSI, etc. In this paper, we present the sufficient condition of the pancyclicity property of OTIS networks. The OTIS network (also referred to as two-level swapped network) is composed of n clones of an n-node original network constituting its clusters. It has received much attention due to its many favorable...

Scalable semi-supervised clustering by spectral kernel learning

    , Article Pattern Recognition Letters ; Vol. 45, issue. 1 , August , 2014 , p. 161-171 ; ISSN: 01678655 Soleymani Baghshah, M ; Afsari, F ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Eslami, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Kernel learning is one of the most important and recent approaches to constrained clustering. Until now many kernel learning methods have been introduced for clustering when side information in the form of pairwise constraints is available. However, almost all of the existing methods either learn a whole kernel matrix or learn a limited number of parameters. Although the non-parametric methods that learn whole kernel matrix can provide capability of finding clusters of arbitrary structures, they are very computationally expensive and these methods are feasible only on small data sets. In this paper, we propose a kernel learning method that shows flexibility in the number of variables between...

    Abstract
Cloud Computing has become popular nowadays. Cloud providers with scalable infrastructures can offer cloud-based services which reduce investment of organizations and diminish most of their operational costs. Therefore, traditional services need to be renovated in the spirit of cloud environments. In this paper, Decision Support-as-a-Service (DSaaS) which is a cloud-based decision support system is introduced. The DSaaS can help managers to make fast and precise decisions. Also, the important challenges of such a system are discussed and a proper energy-aware resource allocation policy is proposed as the solution for the main challenge. A wide range of simulation results show that the policy...

    Abstract
Identifying clusters is an important aspect of analyzing large datasets. Clustering algorithms classically require access to the complete dataset. However, as huge amounts of data are increasingly originating from multiple, dispersed sources in distributed systems, alternative solutions are required. Furthermore, data and network dynamicity in a distributed setting demand adaptable clustering solutions that offer accurate clustering models at a reasonable pace. In this paper, we propose GoScan, a fully decentralized density-based clustering algorithm which is capable of clustering dynamic and distributed datasets without requiring central control or message flooding. We identify two major...

    Abstract
Many applications that utilise wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require essentially secure communication. However, WSNs suffer from some inherent weaknesses because of restricted communication and hardware capabilities. Key management is the crucial important building block for all security goals in WSNs. Most existing researches tried to assign keys assuming homogeneous network architecture. In this study, the authors propose a dynamic key management framework based on elliptical curve cryptography and signcryption method for heterogeneous WSNs. The proposed scheme has network scalability and sensor node (SN)...

Scalable architecture for a contention-free optical network on-chip

    , Article Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing ; Volume 72, Issue 11 , 2012 , Pages 1493-1506 ; 07437315 (ISSN) Koohi, S ; Hessabi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper proposes CoNoC (Contention-free optical NoC) as a new architecture for on-chip routing of optical packets. CoNoC is built upon all-optical switches (AOSs) which passively route optical data streams based on their wavelengths. The key idea of the proposed architecture is the utilization of per-receiver wavelength in the data network to prevent optical contention at the intermediate nodes. Routing optical packets according to their wavelength eliminates the need for resource reservation at the intermediate nodes and the corresponding latency, power, and area overheads. Since passive architecture of the AOS confines the optical contention to the end-points, we propose an electrical...

    Abstract
The different characteristics of UWSN and trade off between UWSN and WSN, have been discussed in many researches. Here, we aim to propose a new architecture for very large scale underwater sensor network. In deployment part of sensors, topology plays a crucial role in issues like communication performance, power consumption, network reliability and fault tolerance capabilities. Hence, it is so critical and should be analyzed how we deploy sensors in targets environment. For instance, to improve reliability of our networks in harsh conditions, it is so important to avoid deploying underwater sensors with single point of failure and bottleneck. For this purpose, we present enhanced clustering...

    Abstract
There are two main scalable methods for streaming live video over the Internet: Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. Though both have their own problems, P2P streaming systems challenge delivering video with constant quality and CDNs approaches require deployment of large number of servers throughout the Internet that is costly. Recently, using hybrid architectures based on both CDN and P2P networks has shown to be an efficient approach for large-scale video distribution over the Internet. This paper is compared the performance of two main hybrid CDN-P2P architectures includes: (i) CDN-P2P unconnected mesh in which independent P2P mesh networks are constructed...

    Abstract
To stay competitive in the new dynamic market having large fluctuations in product demand, manufacturing companies must use systems that not only produce their goods with high productivity but also allow for rapid response to market changes. Reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a new paradigm that enables manufacturing systems to respond quickly and cost effectively to market demand. In other words, RMS is a system designed from the outset, for rapid changes in both hardware and software components, in order to quickly adjust its production capacity to fluctuations in market demand and adapt its functionality to new products. The effectiveness of an RMS depends on implementing its...

    Abstract
In a proportional task allocation problem, it is desired for robotic agents to have equal duty to capability ratios. Here, this problem is addressed as a combination of deployment and consensus problems. Tasks occur in a convex region and each task is assigned to its nearest agent. Agents are deployed on this area in order to reach consensus over the value of their duty to capability ratio. A distributed, asynchronous, and scalable algorithm is presented for solving this problem in continuous time domain

    Abstract
Importance of power dissipation in NoCs, along with power reduction capability of on-chip optical interconnects, offers optical network-on-chip as a new technology solution for on-chip interconnects. In this paper, we extract analytical models for data transmission delay, power consumption, and energy dissipation of optical and traditional NoCs. Utilizing extracted models, we compare optical NoC with electrical one and calculate lower bound limit on the optical link length below which optical on-chip network loses its efficiency. Based on this constraint, we propose a novel hierarchical on-chip network architecture, named as H2NoC, which benefits from optical transmissions in large scale...
