    , Article Procedia Engineering ; Volume 14 , 2011 , Pages 3325-3330 ; 18777058 (ISSN) Rofooei, F. R ; Farhidzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are among the new passive control devices that have gained a large attention due to its inherent features, i.e., recovering the induced residual strains upon unloading (superelastic effect) or by heating (shape memory effect). In this work, the seismic behavior of a set of steel structural models with different number of stories and eccentricities equipped with a type of fixed SMA connections is investigated. Considering an existing SMA connection model in austenite phase, the related moment-rotation behavior is verified through numerical simulation. Then, extensive nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed using a number of 3, 6, 9, and 12 story structural models...

    Abstract
Resistance spot welding of dissimilar materials especially in different thickness is generally more challenging than that of similar materials due to differences in the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the base metals. And also when the part is under static and dynamic forces the health of spot-welds is crucial. Hence, the influence of welding parameters such as current, time, applied force and hold time on the shear-tensile load has been investigated in this study. Moreover, in this research the case study is one of the most important body parts of the vehicle which is front wheel house, and effect of above-mentioned parameter on the strength of spot-welds has been...

3D finite element modeling of shear band localization via the micro-polar Cosserat continuum theory

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 49, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 720-733 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Yadegari, S ; Biabanaki, S. O. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a micro-polar continuum model is presented based on the Cosserat theory for 3D modeling of localization phenomena. Since the classical continuum model suffers from the pathological mesh-dependence in strain localization problem, the governing equations are regularized by adding the rotational degrees-of-freedom to conventional degrees-of-freedom. The fundamental relations in three-dimensional Cosserat continuum are presented and the internal length parameters are introduced in the elasto-plastic constitutive matrix to control the shear bandwidth. The mesh independency of Cosserat model in strain-softening problem is verified and the effect of internal parameters is...

Comparison of rheological behavior of branched polypropylene prepared by chemical modification and electron beam irradiation under air and N2

    , Article Radiation Physics and Chemistry ; Volume 79, Issue 10 , 2010 , Pages 1088-1094 ; 0969806X (ISSN) Mousavi, S. A ; Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Venerus, D. C ; Medina, T. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Chemical and electron beam irradiation methods were used to introduce a branched structure into polypropylene and propylene-ethylene copolymer. The chemical method was carried out in an internal mixer using initiator and TMPTMA monomer. In irradiation method, the polymer was irradiated by electron beam under air and nitrogen atmosphere. The branched structure in the modified polymer was confirmed by rheological measurements. While degradation was significant in chemical method, branching occurred efficiently by irradiation under air. Small amount of ethylene in the propylene copolymer promoted branching over degradation

    Abstract
Inkjet printing of colloidal metals is an attractive method for direct patterning of electrically conductive structures and interconnects in electronic devices, owing to low-cost, low-waste and simplicity of the process. In the present work, mixtures of well-dispersed silver nanoparticles and ethylene glycol were prepared for the inkjet printing process. Three different surfactants including PVP, MSA and AOT were added to study the stability of the nanosilver colloids. The effect of high-intensity ultrasonic treatment and temperature on the rheological properties was investigated utilising a rheometer in plate-plate geometry. It is shown that the viscosity of the ink increases with...

Lipid membranes with transmembrane proteins in shear flow

    , Article Journal of Chemical Physics ; Volume 132, Issue 2 , 2010 ; 00219606 (ISSN) Khoshnood, A ; Noguchi, H ; Gompper, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effects of embedded proteins on the dynamical properties of lipid bilayer membranes are studied in shear flow. Coarse-grained molecular simulations are employed, in which lipids are modeled as short polymers consisting of hydrophilic head groups and hydrophobic tail monomers; similarly, transmembrane proteins are modeled as connected hydrophobic double- or triple-chain molecules with hydrophilic groups at both ends. In thermal equilibrium, rigid proteinlike molecules aggregate in a membrane of flexible lipids, while flexible proteins do not aggregate. In shear flow parallel to the membrane, the monolayers of lipid bilayer slide over each other. The presence of transmembrane proteins...

Vibration analysis of a rotating FGM cantilever ARM

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings, 13 November 2009 through 19 November 2009 ; Volume 15 , 2010 , Pages 359-365 ; 9780791843888 (ISBN) Rahaeifard, M ; Moeini, S. A ; Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made of a mixture of metals and ceramics. Properties of these kinds of materials vary continuously and smoothly from a ceramic surface to a metallic surface in a specified direction of the structure. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGMs have extracted much attention as advanced structural materials in recent years. In this paper, free vibration of a rotating FGM cantilever...

Co-sintering of M2/17-4PH powders for fabrication of functional graded composite layers

    , Article Journal of Composite Materials ; Volume 44, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 417-435 ; 00219983 (ISSN) Firouzdor, V ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Stepwise-graded composite layer of M2 tool stel and 17-4PH stainless steel was fabricated by a simple powder layering technique and the isothermal and nonisothermal sintering response of the bilayer were examined. It was shown that the materials exhibit poor compatibility during co-sintering, i.e., the amount of mismatch shrinkage is significant. An improved compatibility was obtained by adding 0.2 wt% B to the stainless steel powder. Formation of relatively dense layer at the bonding zone indicated an enhanced densification rate at the interface. Microstructural studies showed formation of a ferritic interface in M2/17-4PH composite and elongated grains with an intergranular boride phase...

Silane functionalization of nanodiamond for polymer nanocomposites-effect of degree of silanization

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 506 , 2016 , Pages 254-263 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Hajiali, F ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2016
    Abstract
The silanization of nanodiamond (ND) was successfully carried out by using the esterification reaction of hydrolyzed vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTS) in alcoholic solution. The surface carboxylic group of ND was first enhanced by thermal oxidation to increase the degree of esterification reaction. The extent of silane functionalization of ND was controlled by varying the weight ratio of VTS and oxidized ND (oxND), from 2:1 to 10:1 (w/w) in the functionalization reaction medium. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the highest degree of silanization occurred at VTS/oxND of 5:1 (w/w), while more silane concentrations resulted in...

Dynamics of rear stagnant cap formation at the surface of rising bubbles in surfactant solutions at large reynolds and marangoni numbers and for slow sorption kinetics

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 492 , 2016 , Pages 127-137 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Dukhin, S. S ; Lotfi, M ; Kovalchuk, V. I ; Bastani, D ; Miller, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
In spite of the high level in the theory of steady rear stagnant caps (RSC) and its influence on steady rising, its practical application is mostly impossible because the coefficients for the adsorption and desorption rates are separately unknown. The determination of ka and kd separately is an actual task for the adsorption dynamics as whole. While steady RSC and steady rising retardation by surfactants are described in literature in details, only few papers are devoted to the modeling of the decelerated rising. Moreover, steady rising depends on the ratio ka/kd and its investigation is not helpful for the determination of kd. In contrast a possibility to determine kd (or ka independently)...

    , Article Mathematical Biosciences ; Volume 294 , 2017 , Pages 160-171 ; 00255564 (ISSN) Zehi Mofrad, A ; Mashayekhan, S ; Bastani, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study proposes a mathematical model to evaluate the impact of oxygen carriers and scaffold geometry on oxygen distribution and cell growth in a 3D cardiac construct using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Flow equations, oxygen balance equation and cell balance equation were solved using special initial and boundary conditions. The modeling results revealed that 55% increase in cardiac cell density occurred by using 6.4% perfluorocarbon oxygen carrier (PFC) compared to pure culture medium without PFC supplementation. Moreover, the effects of the scaffold geometry on cell density were examined by changing the channel numbers and the construct length. A 30% increase in the average cells...

Numerical analysis of a dielectrophoresis field-flow fractionation device for the separation of multiple cell types

    , Article Journal of Separation Science ; Volume 40, Issue 20 , 2017 , Pages 4067-4075 ; 16159306 (ISSN) Shamloo, A ; Kamali, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, a dielectrophoresis field-flow fractionation device was analyzed using a numerical simulation method and the behaviors of a set of different cells were investigated. By reducing the alternating current frequency of the electrodes from the value used in the original setup configuration and increasing the number of exit channels, total discrimination in cell trajectories and subsequent separation of four cell types were achieved. Cells were differentiated based on their size and dielectric response that are represented in their real part of Clausius–Mossotti factor at different frequencies. A number of novel designs were also proposed based on the original setup configuration....

Igniter jet dynamics in solid fuel ramjets

    , Article Acta Astronautica ; Volume 64, Issue 2-3 , 2009 , Pages 166-175 ; 00945765 (ISSN) Tahsini, A. M ; Farshchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The dynamics of a two dimensional plane jet injected at the base of a step, parallel to the wall, in backward facing step flow geometry is numerically studied. The objective of this work is to gain insight into the dynamics of the igniter flow field in solid fuel ramjet motors. Solid fuel ramjets operate by ingestion of air and subsequent combustion with a solid fuel grain such as polyethylene. The system of governing equations is solved with a finite volume approach using a structured grid in which the AUSM+ scheme is used to calculate the convective fluxes. The Spalart and Allmaras turbulence model is used in these simulations. Experimental data have been used to validate the flow solver...

    Abstract
The unsteady flow of blood through stenosed artery, driven by an oscillatory pressure gradient, is studied. An appropriate shape of the time-dependent stenoses which are overlapped in the realm of the formation of arterial narrowing is constructed mathematically. A msathematical model is developed by treating blood as a non-Newtonian fluid characterized by the Oldroyd-B and Cross models. A numerical scheme has been used to solve the unsteady nonlinear Navier-stokes equations in cylindrical coordinate system governing flow, assuming axial symmetry under laminar flow condition so that the problem effectively becomes two-dimensional. Finite difference technique was used to investigate the...

Numerical investigation of the effects of soil densification on the reduction of liquefaction-induced settlement of shallow foundations

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 4 A , 2009 , Pages 331-339 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Shahir, H ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The liquefaction phenomenon is usually accompanied by a large amount of settlement. Based on the observations made in past earthquakes, ground improvement by densification is one of the most useful approaches to reduce the liquefaction-induced settlement. Currently, there is no analytical solution for evaluation of the amount of settlement and tilting of footings that are constructed on densified ground surrounded by liquefiable soil. A number of factors, such as underlying soil properties, dimensions of the footing and earthquake loading characteristics, cause the problem to become complicated. In this paper, the dynamic response of shallow foundations on both liquefiable and...

Finite-element modelling of laterally loaded piles in clay

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Geotechnical Engineering ; Volume 162, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 151-163 ; 13532618 (ISSN) Ahmadi, M. M ; Ahmari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A three-dimensional finite-element procedure is used to analyse laterally loaded piles in clay. A strain-hardening von Mises constitutive law is used in the analyses. Two field-measured full-scale case studies, one in soft clay and the other one in stiff clay, are investigated by the constructed finite-element model. In order to study soil anisotropy and soil mass secondary structure, the real shear strength and elastic modulus are back-calculated by fitting the pile head load-deflection curve to the field results. Comparing back-calculated shear strength values with the measured ones indicates high anisotropy effect in stiff clay. In order to verify the model validity, the maximum occurred...

Effect of whole-body vibration and sitting configurations on lumbar spinal loads of vehicle occupants

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 107 , 2019 , Pages 292-301 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Amiri, S ; Naserkhaki, S ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been identified as one of the serious risk factors leading to spinal disorders, particularly in professional drivers. Although the influential factors in this area have been investigated epidemiologically, finite element (FE) modeling can efficiently help us better understand the problem. In this study, a modified HYBRID III dummy FE model which was enhanced by detailed viscoelastic discs in the lumbar region was utilized to simulate the effect of WBV on lumbar spine loads. Spinal responses to the vertical sinusoidal vibrations of a generic seat were obtained and spinal injury risk factors were calculated. Effects of variation of excitation frequencies, three...

Gut-on-a-chip: Current progress and future opportunities

    Abstract
Organ-on-a-chip technology tries to mimic the complexity of native tissues in vitro. Important progress has recently been made in using this technology to study the gut with and without microbiota. These in vitro models can serve as an alternative to animal models for studying physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. While these models have greater physiological relevance than two-dimensional (2D) cell systems in vitro, endocrine and immunological functions in gut-on-a-chip models are still poorly represented. Furthermore, the construction of complex models, in which different cell types and structures interact, remains a challenge. Generally, gut-on-a-chip models have the potential to...

Subject-specific regression equations to estimate lower spinal loads during symmetric and asymmetric static lifting

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 102 , 2020 Ghezelbash, F ; Shirazi Adl, A ; El Ouaaid, Z ; Plamondon, A ; Arjmand, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Workplace safety assessment, personalized treatment design and back pain prevention programs require accurate subject-specific estimation of spinal loads. Since no noninvasive method can directly estimate spinal loads, easy-to-use regression equations that are constructed based on the results of complex musculoskeletal models appear as viable alternatives. Thus, we aim to develop subject-specific regression equations of L4-L5 and L5-S1 shear and compression forces during various symmetric/asymmetric tasks using a nonlinear personalized finite element musculoskeletal trunk model. Kinematics and electromyography (EMG) activities of 19 young healthy subjects were collected during 64 different...

Effects of solar energy on the mechanical properties of tailings in tailings dams

    , Article GeoCongress 2008: Characterization, Monitoring, and Modeling of GeoSystems, New Orleans, LA, 9 March 2008 through 12 March 2008 ; Issue 179 , 2008 , Pages 605-612 ; 08950563 (ISSN); 9780784409725 (ISBN) Osouli, A. R ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Mine tailings are the most common materials that are used in construction of tailings dams. Due to high level of environmental hazard and serious consequences that are associated with tailings dam failure, proper design of tailings dams is an important factor in mining industry. Water level fluctuation, change in permeability of dam foundation, seismic loads, and excessive settlements are the most common reasons of failure, particularly in upstream type tailings dams. Due to low shear strength of wet tailings, drying of tailing material is very common in practice during the dam construction. In hot climate, the received solar energy at the soil surface converts to soil heat flux, air heat...
