    This paper presents results from a series of constant normal load direct shear tests on artificially created rock joints, in an attempt to quantify the effects of different factors that contribute to the shear strength along "ideal" rock joints. Particular focus is given to the effect of asperity orientation with respect to the direction of shearing. In many historical rock joint shear strength criteria, the effect of a joint's roughness on the joint shear strength is described based on analysis of only a single profile in the direction of shearing.     Abstract
    This paper presents a comparison of analytical and experimental results of an investigation on the diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls (SPWs). Experimental studies were carried out on three 1/3-scaled, one story single bay shear walls. The first specimen was a control specimen which was unstiffened and the other two specimens were diagonally stiffened using different stiffener configurations. Finite-element models of full SPWs are developed using finite element model. The results are compared with experimental results to investigate the influence of stiffeners on the behavior of the specimens.     Diversion in heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs plays the most important role to the success of acidizing. Without the use of diversion, more acid preferentially flows into the high-permeability region and leaves the low-permeability region underreacted. But a clear understanding of diverting agents, such as polymer-based in-situ-gelled acids, can help uniformly stimulate the near-wellbore region.     Laminated composite beams incorporated with magneto-rheological fluid are being used in variety of critical applications. An N-layer magneto-rheological-laminated beam based on layerwise theory has been developed to study the dynamic characteristics. For simulation purpose, an MR-laminated beam with five layers is considered in which two layers filled with magneto-rheological and three layers are made of composite materials.     Abstract
    To investigate the influences of microstructure changes on dilatancy of unsaturated loess at high suctions, a direct shear box device using the vapour equilibrium technique was used. Through conducting two series of direct shear tests on both intact and recompacted loess specimens and also investigating microstructural changes using the mercury intrusion porosim-etry (MIP) technique, a linear increase in dilatancy with suctions ranging from 8 to 230 MPa can be identified at different net stresses.     Abstract
    In this paper the dynamic properties of Babolsar dry sand was investigated through one dimensional shaking table tests. 8 models of Babolsar loose dry sand under low confining pressures, were subjected to different harmonic and irregular dynamic loadings. The container was a laminar shear box having 24 layers each moving on the lower one. The dynamic properties including shear wave velocity, maximum shear modulus and damping ratio of the samples were addressed in this project. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group, London

    Experimental work was carried out to investigate the influence of impeller speed, granulation time, binder mass and their interactions on granule size distribution, mean size and binder content distribution in a conical high shear granulator. It was observed that the response of high shear granulation to changes in process parameters varies significantly from one operating condition to another.     Effect of openings' dimensions on the relative flexural behavior of adjacent piers (independent or conjugate) in perforated shear walls is addressed. 384 designed models were made and exposed to lateral loads. For middle openings, in addition to the alpha parameter in the literature, the relative flexural behavior of piers in medium-rise buildings can be predicted as function of thickness-to-length ratio of the coupling beam and the ratio of the coupling beam length to the pier length; but in high-rise buildings, it is always conjugate.     In this paper, different physical differential equations related to heat transfer and shear deformation of beams are solved by new but powerful analytical methods: Liao's Homotopy method (H.M), Homotopy method with Pade approximation and the He's Homotopy-Perturbation Method (HPM). Nonlinear convective-radiative cooling equation, nonlinear heat equation with cubic nonlinearity and the shear deformation of sandwich beams are used as examples to illustrate the solution procedures.     Mixture of sandy soil and bentonite clay can be used to seal the sanitary landfills and prevent the spread of leachate. Over time, this mixture may be subjected to different landfill contaminants, including acidic pollutants and shear strength variations.     The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of bonding temperature and holding time on the metallurgical and mechanical properties for weld joints of 5 mm aluminum to copper using Sn interlayer. The bonding temperature varied from 500 to 600 °C whilst the holding time varied from 30 to 120 min under 8 MPa uniaxial load in 1 × 10−4 torr vacuum.     In this research, the dynamic behavior of serrated flows observed in the flexural stress-deflection curves during three-point bending (3 PB) tests on Zr-, Ti- and La-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is statistically analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of strain rate on the serrations is studied. Based on the ductility of alloy, two distinct types of dynamics are detected. For more ductile alloys (Zr- and Ti-based BMGs) the stress drop magnitude of serrations obeys a power-law distribution of shear avalanches, which is an indicator of the self-organized critical (SOC) state in dynamics.
