On the Capacity and Cooperative Strategies in Information Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Akhbari, Bahareh (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the remarkable growth in using communication networks such as ad-hoc, wireless and sensor networks, studying the building blocks of these networks (e.g., relay channel and interference channel) from information theoretic viewpoint and investigating cooperative strategies have recently received considerable attention. Also, owing to wide range of applications, state-dependent channels have been widely studied. In this dissertation, at first, we consider a state-dependent relay channel (SD-RC). For the cases wherein channel states are available causally or non-causally at different nodes, we propose new achievable rates for this channel using compress-and-forward strategy. Also we...

Improvement of the Performance of “Universal Portfolios” Using Techniques of “Universal Source Coding”

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nemati, Sajjad (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Aminzadeh Gohari, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, following a short introduction to investment problem, this problem is investigated with both probabilistic and universal approach. Using the concept of the set of reference algorithms, we present a mathematical definition for universality. We then give examples of universal algorithms for investment and prove their universality. These algorithms are:
Universal Portfolios without Side Information, Universal Portfolios with Side Information, Universal Portfolios with Semi-Constant Rebalanced Portfolio, Universal Portfolios with Switching.
We then present a new algorithm called “Universal Portfolio with Multiple Side Information Sources”. This algorithm is applied in...

Multiple relay channels with delays: with and without side information

    , Article GLOBECOM - IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference2009 ; Article number 5426043 , 2009 ; 9781424441488 (ISBN) Iraji, M. B ; Khosravi Farsani, R ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper the Multiple Relay Channels (MRC) with delays, with and without channel state information (CSI) are investigated from an information theoretic point of view. For the MRC with unlimited look ahead where the relays can use the whole received block to encode, upper and lower bounds on the capacity are derived which are tight for the degraded case. For the MRC without-delay where the relays have access to the present received symbols in addition to the past symbols, the capacity of the degraded channel is established using Shannon's strategy for the channels with side information. Then we introduce the state dependent MRC with unlimited look ahead and derive a lower bound on the...

Robust multiplicative audio and speech watermarking using statistical modeling

    , Article 2009 IEEE International Conference on Communications, ICC 2009, Dresden, 14 June 2009 through 18 June 2009 ; 2009 ; 05361486 (ISSN); 9781424434350 (ISBN) Akhaee, M. A ; Khademi Kalantari, N ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a semi-blind multiplicative watermarking approach for audio and speech signals has been presented. At the receiver end, the optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector aided by the channel side information for Gaussian and Laplacian signals in noisy environment is designed and implemented. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically calculated and verified by simulation. Then, we adapt the proposed scheme to speech and audio signals. To improve robustness, the algorithm is applied to low frequency components of the host signal. Besides, the power of the watermark is controlled elegantly to have inaudibility using Perceptual Evaluation of Audio Quality (PEAQ) and...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new scaling-based image-adaptive watermarking system has been presented, which exploits human visual model for adapting the watermark data to local properties of the host image. Its improved robustness is due to embedding in the low-frequency wavelet coefficients and optimal control of its strength factor from HVS point of view. Maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder is used aided by the channel side information. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically calculated and verified by simulation. Experimental results confirm the imperceptibility of the proposed method and its higher robustness against attacks compared to alternative watermarking methods in the literature....

Embedded SI partial transmit sequence with improved bit error rate

    , Article 2nd International Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE, Lahore, 25 March 2008 through 26 March 2008 ; 2008 ; 9781424422937 (ISBN) Reisi, N ; Ahmadian Attari, M ; Reisi, N

    Abstract
OFDM is a multicarrier modulation scheme with high bandwidth efficiency and robustness to multipath environment used in high data rate transmission. However, a drawback of this system is the large Peak-to-Average-Power Ratio (PAR) of the transmit signal which makes its straightforward implementation quite costly. PAR in an OFDM based system can be reduced significantly by PTS method for which data recovery requires side information (SI) about the phases used at transmitter. Sending SI, not only reduces the rate, but also increases BER, for any error in SI detection can damage a large amount of transmitted information. By introducing a new phase set, we propose a PTS based method for MPSK...

Selected mapping algorithm for PAPR reduction of space-frequency coded OFDM systems without side information

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 60, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 1211-1216 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Ferdosizadeh Naeiny, M ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Selected mapping (SLM) is a well-known technique for peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this technique, different representations of OFDM symbols are generated by rotation of the original OFDM frame by different phase sequences, and the signal with minimum PAPR is selected and transmitted. To compensate for the effect of the phase rotation at the receiver, it is necessary to transmit the index of the selected phase sequence as side information (SI). In this paper, an SLM technique is introduced for the PAPR reduction of space-frequency-block-coded OFDM systems with Alamouti coding scheme. Additionally, a suboptimum...

Contourlet-based image watermarking using optimum detector in a noisy environment

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Image Processing ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 967-980 ; 10577149 (ISSN) Akhaee, M. A ; Sahraeian, S. M. E ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an improved multiplicative image watermarking system is presented. Since human visual system is less sensitive to the image edges, watermarking is applied in the contourlet domain, which represents image edges sparsely. In the presented scheme, watermark data is embedded in directional subband with the highest energy. By modeling the contourlet coefficients with General Gaussian Distribution (GGD), the distribution of watermarked noisy coefficients is analytically calculated. The tradeoff between the transparency and robustness of the watermark data is solved in a novel fashion. At the receiver, based on the Maximum Likelihood (ML) decision rule, an optimal detector by the aid...
