    , Article ATC 2009 - Proceedings of the 2009 International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Communications, 12 October 2009 through 14 October 2009, Hai Phong ; 2009 , Pages 284-288 ; 9781424451395 (ISBN) Abdizadeh, M ; Rad, H. J ; Jafarnia, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the downlink of cooperative Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA), where a set of Mobile Terminals (MT) are cooperating with the purpose of improving their downlink communications reliability with the Base Station (BS). In order to achieve the spatial diversity, a new cooperation scenario is proposed. Afterward, in addition to multiuser precoding, Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) according to the Maximum Signal to Noise Ratio (MSNR) criterion at the destination is investigated. Then, the optimal transmission power control strategy under a fixed total power constraint is illustrated and analyzed. Compared with equal transmission power assignment where BS...

Ambient data-based online electromechanical mode estimation by error-feedback lattice RLS filter

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; 2017 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Setareh, M ; Parniani, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a novel error-feedback lattice recursive least-squares (EF-LRLS) filter for online estimation of power system oscillatory modes. The EF-LRLS filter is applied to ambient data provided by phasor measurement units to identify the autoregressive (AR) model parameters. This filter has a modular structure; accordingly, if the length of the filter equals N, it identifies AR(1) to AR(N) models concurrently. In the proposed method, removing very low and high frequencies and re-sampling steps are fulfilled in an online fashion. This adaptive filter has less computational complexity than standard RLS filter, making it an appropriate choice for online system identification. The...

Resource allocation for elastic optical networks using geometric optimization

    , Article Journal of Optical Communications and Networking ; Volume 9, Issue 10 , 2017 , Pages 889-899 ; 19430620 (ISSN) Hadi, M ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Resource allocation with quality of service constraints is one of the most challenging problems in elastic optical networks that is normally formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization program. In this paper, we focus on novel properties of geometric optimization and provide a heuristic approach for resource allocation that is much faster than its mixed-integer nonlinear counterpart. Our heuristic consists of two main parts for routing/traffic ordering and power/spectrum assignment. It aims at minimization of the transmit optical power and spectrum usage constrained to the quality of service and physical requirements. We consider three routing and three traffic ordering procedures...

Transmit signal design in colocated MIMO radar without covariance matrix optimization

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 53, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 2178-2186 ; 00189251 (ISSN) Imani, S ; Nayebi, M. M ; Ghorashi, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of the waveform design for colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars is considered in two parts. In the first part, we design transmit waveform in order to approximate the desired beampattern with low number of samples in the transmitter. Unlike the traditional waveform design methods, in our solution, waveforms are designed for a specific number of samples. Also, the constant envelope constraint that is an important practical constraint is considered. In the second part, we jointly design the transmit waveform and receive filter by a sequential algorithm, considering a priori information of target and interference angle locations. We have evaluated...

    A 38 pJ/b optimal soft-MIMO detector

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs ; Volume 64, Issue 9 , 2017 , Pages 1062-1066 ; 15497747 (ISSN) Shabany, M ; Doostnejad, R ; Mahdavi, M ; Gulak, P. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An optimal soft multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector is proposed with linear complexity for a general spatial multiplexing system with two transmitting symbols and NR 2 receiving antennas. The computational complexity of the proposed scheme is independent of the operating signal-to-noise ratio and grows linearly with the constellation order. It provides the soft maximum-likelihood solution using an efficient log-likelihood ratio calculation method, avoiding the exhaustive search on all the candidate nodes. Moreover, an efficient pipelined hardware implementation of the detection algorithm is proposed, which is fabricated and fully tested in a 130-nm CMOS technology. Operating at...

Estimation of effective brain connectivity with dual kalman filter and EEG source localization methods

    , Article Australasian Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine ; Volume 40, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 675-686 ; 01589938 (ISSN) Rajabioun, M ; Motie Nasrabadi, A ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effective connectivity is one of the most important considerations in brain functional mapping via EEG. It demonstrates the effects of a particular active brain region on others. In this paper, a new method is proposed which is based on dual Kalman filter. In this method, firstly by using a brain active localization method (standardized low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography) and applying it to EEG signal, active regions are extracted, and appropriate time model (multivariate autoregressive model) is fitted to extracted brain active sources for evaluating the activity and time dependence between sources. Then, dual Kalman filter is used to estimate model parameters or effective...

    Multi-antenna coded caching

    , Article IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory - Proceedings, 25 June 2017 through 30 June 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2113-2117 ; 21578095 (ISSN) ; 9781509040964 (ISBN) Shariatpanahi, S. P ; Caire, G ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper we consider a single-cell downlink scenario where a multiple-antenna base station delivers contents to multiple cache-enabled user terminals. Based on the multicasting opportunities provided by the so-called Coded Caching technique, we investigate three delivery approaches. Our baseline scheme employs the coded caching technique on top of max-min fair multicasting. The second one consists of a joint design of Zero-Forcing (ZF) and coded caching, where the coded chunks are formed in the signal domain (complex field). The third scheme is similar to the second one with the difference that the coded chunks are formed in the data domain (finite field). We derive closed-form rate...

Cognitive radar sequence design under the spectral compatibility requirements

    , Article IET Radar, Sonar and Navigation ; Volume 11, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 759-767 ; 17518784 (ISSN) Ge, P ; Cui, G ; Karbasi, S. M ; Kong, L ; Yang, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
As the increasing demands of military detection, wireless communication and remote sensing make the spectrum even more crowded, radar sequence design meeting spectral compatibility requirement is a challenging and urgent problem. This study is devoted to designing optimised phase-coded sequences which keep spectral-compatible with the overlaid electromagnetic radiators and at the same time optimise the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). First, an intelligent dynamic spectrum information around the radar system is achieved by a radio environmental map. The information is introduced to form a constrained optimisation process aimed at improving the spectral compatibility and the...

    , Article IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory - Proceedings, 17 June 2018 through 22 June 2018 ; Volume 2018-June , 2018 , Pages 1914-1918 ; 21578095 (ISSN) ; 9781538647806 (ISBN) Tolli, A ; Shariatpanahi, S. P ; Kaleva, J ; Khalaj, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A single cell downlink scenario is considered where a multiple-antenna base station delivers contents to cache-enabled user terminals. Using the ideas from multi-server coded caching (CC) scheme developed for wired networks, a joint design of CC and general multicast beamforming is considered to benefit from spatial multiplexing gain, improved interference management and the global CC gain, simultaneously. The proposed multicast beamforming strategies utilize the multiantenna multicasting opportunities provided by the CC technique and optimally balance the detrimental impact of both noise and inter-stream interference from coded messages transmitted in parallel. The proposed scheme is shown...
