, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ahmadie Amiri, Hossein (Author) ; Esmaeil Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study proposes an efficient risk-targeted framework for integrated optimal seismic design and quantifying target safety of steel Special Moment-Resisting Frames (steel SMRFs) with and without various passive damping devices such as Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRBs), Friction Dampers (FDs), and Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs). This framework provides an automated design procedure formulated as a constrained single-objective optimization problem to achieve the minimum Life Cycle Cost (LCC) within the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and can be the basis of current seismic codes for target safety calibration. LCC includes initial construction cost and lifetime seismic losses such...

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 46 , 2013 , Pages 155-164 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Farahi, M ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
As a matter of fact, it is necessary to have the values of Response Modification Factor R, Over-strength Factor Ω0, and Deflection Amplification Factor Cd in order to design seismic-force-resisting systems according to design and loading codes. This study is intended to evaluate these factors for a structural lateral bracing system called Chevron Knee Bracing (CKB). In this type of bracing, the knee elements assist the system to dissipate energy through the formation of plastic flexural and/or shear hinges within the presented bracing system. The approach utilized in this study is according to FEMA P695 based on low probability of structural collapse and involves nonlinear static and dynamic...

    Abstract
In this work, thermo-mechanical behavior of an aluminum alloy during gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is studied using a three-dimensional mathematical model. The model can be employed to determine residual stresses and their distribution after the welding operation. The effects of the strain hardening and the temperature dependency of material properties have also been considered in the calculations. Model validation has been performed using experimental measurements of residual stress by means of hole-drilling technique. The measurements have been carried out at the heat affected zone (HAZ) and base metal next to the welding line. In addition, microstructural observations have been made to...

The objective of this investigation was to provide a detailed evaluation of the heat affected zone properties of a high-strength pipeline steel. The X80 high-strength low-alloy microalloyed steel was supplied as a hot rolled plate with accelerated cooling. The four-wire tandem submerged arc welding process with different heat input was used to generate welded joints. The microstructure of the heat affected zone depended on heat input values. M/A constituent appeared in the microstructure of HAZ region for all of the specimens along the prior-austenite grain boundaries and between bainitic ferrite laths. Charpy impact specimens were notched in four locations: FL (fusion line), FL+1mm, FL+2mm...

Application of damage spectra as seismic intensity measures in endurance time method for steel moment-resisting frames

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 53-64 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Maleki Amin, M. J ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In seismic resistant design of moment frames, the structure behavior under earthquakes has to be examined considering various damage criteria. Damage indices can be estimated by Endurance Time (ET) method with minimum computational effort. The quality of this estimation can be improved in different ways. In this paper, the graphs of a certain damage index versus natural period of the structure, called damage spectra, are produced applying intensifying ET records and scaled Ground Motions (GM). Then, the excitation duration of ET acceleration functions (target time) is modified in order to reach acceptable consistency between ET and GM damage spectra. Moreover, various damage indices of a...

Effects of alloying elements and microstructure on the susceptibility of the welded HSLA steel to hydrogen-induced cracking and sulfide stress cracking

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 507, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 167-173 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Beidokhti, B ; Dolati, A ; Koukabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress cracking (SSC) susceptibility of the submerged arc welded API 5L-X70 pipeline steel with different amounts of titanium at two levels of manganese (1.4% and 2%) were studied. The centerline segregation region (CSR) observed in the X70 pipe steel played an important role in the HIC susceptibility. Increased acicular ferrite content in the microstructure improved HIC resistance and SSC resistance, while bainite and martensite/austenite constituents deteriorated the workability of the welded specimens in sour environments. The 2% Mn-series welds showed higher SSC susceptibility than the 1.4% Mn-series welds due to the higher hardness values of...

    Sharif University of Technology  2019
    Abstract
In this research, 19 specimens of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete rectangular beams were made and their shear resistance was determined experimentally. The results were compared with estimations by ACI 318, RILEM TC 162-TDF, Australian guideline, and Iranian national building regulations. To compare the code estimations, the ratio of experimental shear strength to predicted shear strength was calculated for each code. This ratio is in fact a measure of safety factor on the one hand and a measure of precision of the estimation on the other hand. Based on the results of both studies, the authors concluded that the Australian guideline, with the amount of 2.5, provided the...

    Abstract
Block Slit Dampers (BSDs) are recently developed metallic yielding dampers for passive structural control. This type of damping devices can provide designers with an option of using highly ductile systems, such as steel special moment resisting frames (steel SMRFs), in important structures located in regions of high seismicity. The aim of this study is to obtain a performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure for these devices, and to assess the seismic performance levels of low-rise steel SMRF equipped with BSDs using the endurance time (ET) dynamic analysis method. For this purpose, first, the simplified behavioral model of these devices was established based on the analysis of...

Surrogate SDOF models for probabilistic performance assessment of multistory buildings: Methodology and application for steel special moment frames

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 212 , 2020 Vaseghiamiri, S ; Mahsuli, M ; Ghannad, M. A ; Zareian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper proposes a methodology for generating surrogate single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) models that can be utilized to estimate the probability distribution of the roof drift ratio of multistory buildings at various ground motion intensity measures. The use of an SDOF model as a surrogate for multistory buildings can significantly alleviate the high computational cost for probabilistic seismic demand assessment considering both model uncertainty and record-to-record variability. The surrogate SDOF model generated herein explicitly accounts for model uncertainties and can be used as an alternative to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of detailed building structures. Applications for such...

    Abstract
The stability and integrity of structures under indeterminant external loadings, particularly earthquakes, is a vital issue for the design and safe operation of marine and offshore structures. Over the past decades, many structural control systems, such as viscous-based systems, have been developed and embedded in marine and offshore structures, particularly oil platforms to maintain the stability and mitigate the seismic hazards. Rapid improvement in intelligent materials, including shape memory alloys (SMAs) and Magnetorheological fluid (MRF), have led to the design and development of efficient structural control elements. The present work aims to establish a framework for the structural...

    Abstract
This study aims to develop the Consistent Fish-Bone (CFB) simplified model for efficient estimation of Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) in irregular steel Moment Resisting Frames (steel-MRFs). To achieve this goal, some modifications based on the energy consistent approach have been applied to the Improved Fish-Bone (IFB) simplified model previously presented for reinforced concrete MRFs. These modifications include: 1) adding truss elements to the IFB model to consider the effect of flexural deformations and determining their areas by balancing the overturning moment and the strain energy due to the axial deformation of columns in the original steel-MRF with the overturning moment and...

An inverse method for reconstruction of the residual stress field in welded plates

    , Article Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 132, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 0612051-0612059 ; 00949930 (ISSN) Farrahi, G. H ; Faghidian, S. A ; Smith, D. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Welding process is widely used in manufacturing of many important engineering components. For such structures, the most important problem is the development of residual stresses and distortion due to welding. Welding tensile residual stresses have a detrimental effect and play an important role in an industrial environment. Crack initiation and propagation in static or fatigue loading, or in stress corrosion can be greatly accelerated by welding tensile stresses. Practically, however, it is often very difficult to characterize the residual stress state completely, while the knowledge of the complete residual stress distribution in structures is essential for assessing their safety and...

Nonlinear hierarchical multiscale modeling of cortical bone considering its nanoscale microstructure

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 42, Issue 10 , 2009 , Pages 1560-1565 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Ghanbari, J ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We have used a hierarchical multiscale modeling scheme for the analysis of cortical bone considering it as a nanocomposite. This scheme consists of definition of two boundary value problems, one for macroscale, and another for microscale. The coupling between these scales is done by using the homogenization technique. At every material point in which the constitutive model is needed, a microscale boundary value problem is defined using a macroscopic kinematical quantity and solved. Using the described scheme, we have studied elastic properties of cortical bone considering its nanoscale microstructural constituents with various mineral volume fractions. Since the microstructure of bone...
