Scattering of SH-waves by an elliptic cavity/crack beneath the interface between functionally graded and homogeneous half-spaces via multipole expansion method

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 435 , 2018 , Pages 372-389 ; 0022460X (ISSN) Ghafarollahi, A ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2018
    Abstract
In this study, based on multipole expansion method an analytical treatment is presented for the anti-plane scattering of SH-waves by an arbitrarily oriented elliptic cavity/crack which is embedded near the interface between exponentially graded and homogeneous half-spaces. The cavity is embedded within the inhomogeneous half-space. The boundary value problem of interest is solved by constructing an appropriate set of multipole functions which satisfy (i) the governing equation in each half-space, (ii) the continuity conditions across the interface between the two half-spaces, and (iii) the far-field radiation and regularity conditions. The analytical expressions for the scattered...

Scattering of plane elastic waves by a multi-coated nanofiber with deformable interfaces

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 141-142 , 2018 , Pages 195-218 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Taheri Jam, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The scattering of in-plane P- and SV-waves by a multi-coated circular nanofiber with deformable interfaces is of interest. To this end, in the present work, after introducing two kinds of interface momenta defined as the derivative of the interface excess kinetic energy with respect to the average and relative velocities at the interface, we extend the elastostatic theory of Gurtin et al. (1998) on deformable interfaces to the elastodynamic theory and derive the interface equations of motion using Hamilton principle. The effects of the generalized interface properties including the interface inertial parameters and interface stiffness towards stretch and slip on the dynamic stress...

Investigating Starin Growth in Concentric Braces and Specify the Start Time of Failure in Section

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hayatbini, Kourosh (Author) ; Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this Thesis, the behaviour of stell brace was studied in finite element models. In this section, a comparison between the results of these models and the results of experimental models which were done in past years, was carried out. It shows that these result is in good agreement with each other, Moreover it has been found that the primary cause of failure in the sample is local bucking and then change in the geometry of sample which will be followed by strain jumping in next cycles which shows the importance of local buckling due to the proximity of this event to strain jumps and can be accepted as braces limit state design. Finally, we try to predict the time of failure of samples with...

An investigation of fracture geometry in hydraulic fracturing on a gas reservoir well production enhancement

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 32, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 150-157 ; ISSN: 10916466 Baghbanan, A. R ; Parvazdavani, M ; Abbasi, S ; Rahnama, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Utilizing improved production methods have been always challenging in upstream industries. Nowadays, hydraulic fracturing is one of the most prestigious mechanical methods. Application of this method is in wells with low productivity index. Hydraulic fracturing efficiency depends on various factors, such as fracture geometry, fluid composition, and stress distribution. But some of them would be ignored, such as fracture geometry, which is neglected due to nongravity and lack of investigation of DFN statistical population assumption. The authors develop a more comprehensive methodology based on fracture geometry and aim to model one of the gas reservoirs in Iran that is naturally fractured by...

Plaque structure affects mechanical stress distribution within blood vessels

    , Article Proceedings of the IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering, BioMed 2014 ; 2014 , pp. 239-243 Mohseni, M ; Mehboudi, N ; Abdollahi, M ; Shamloo, A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The main goal of this study is to investigate the effects of plaque structure on its stress distribution. Rupture of plaque causes cerebrovascular diseases which lead to high mortality rates all over the world. Computers are powerful tools to understand the mechanism of plaque rupture. In this study, 3D fluid structure interaction simulation is constructed in ABAQUS 6.13 to clarify the relation between stress distribution of plaque and its structure. A model of common carotid artery with distributed stenosis was chosen for the simulation. To investigate the effects of plaque structure on stress distribution, thickness of fibrous cap and lipid core size were varied in the stenosis....

The effect of material property grading on the rolling contact stress field

    , Article Mechanics Research Communications ; Vol. 55, issue , 2014 , p. 45-52 Alinia, Y ; Guler, M. A ; Adibnazari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates the subsurface stress field induced by a rigid cylinder rolling over a functionally graded coating-substrate system. The Fourier transform is employed to extract the stress components within the graded coating and the homogeneous substrate. The distributions of the stresses are given through the depth and along the coating-substrate interface. The contour plots of normalized Von Mises stresses are provided as well. The results indicate that continuous variation of the shear modulus substantially reduces the difference between the in-plane stresses along the interface. Also, the softening coating leads to the minimum value of the stress concentration near the contact...

Boussinesq indentation of a transversely isotropic half-space reinforced by a buried inextensible membrane

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Vol. 38, issue. 7-8 , April , 2014 , p. 2163-2172 Shodja, H. M ; Ahmadi, S. F ; Eskandari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The normal indentation of a rigid circular disk into the surface of a transversely isotropic half-space reinforced by a buried inextensible thin film is addressed. By virtue of a displacement potential function and the Hankel transform, the governing equations of this axisymmetric mixed boundary value problem are represented as a dual integral equation, which is subsequently reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Two important results of the contact stress distribution beneath the disk region as well as the equivalent stiffness of the system are expressed in terms of the solution of the Fredholm integral equation. When the membrane is located on the surface or at the...

Constitutive law of finite deformation elastoplasticity with proportional loadings

, Article Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 135, Issue 6 , September , 2013 ; 00949930 (ISSN) Darijani, H ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, decomposition of the total strain into elastic and plastic parts is investigated for extension of elastic-type constitutive models to finite deformation elastoplasticity. In order to model the elastic behavior, a Hookean-type constitutive equation based on the logarithmic strain is considered. Based on this constitutive equation and assuming the deformation theory of Hencky as well as the yield criteria of von Mises, the elastic-plastic behavior of materials at finite deformation is modeled in the case of the proportional loading. Moreover, this elastoplastic model is applied in order to determine the stress distribution in thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels at finite...

Effect of lateral placement of ceramic and metal grains on thermal stress distribution throughout FGMS

    , Article 28th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences 2012, ICAS 2012 ; Volume 3 , 2012 , Pages 1878-1884 ; 9781622767540 (ISBN) Torabi, A ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The properties of Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are characterized by gradual variation of volume fraction of their constituents or phases over the thickness direction. They are normally ceramic in one side and metal in the other side. This kind of material has been employed as thermal barrier and also as coatings in many applications including turbine blades. Thermal stress behavior of FGMs is normally studied by simulating the material as a composite laminate where the properties ofeach layer are found by averaging the properties and volume fraction of FGM constituents through the thickness of the layer. However, it should be mentioned that the grains of FGM constituents are usually...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 125, Issue 3 , January , 2012 , Pages 2467-2475 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Abadyan, M ; Bagheri, R ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley  2012
    Abstract
The fracture behavior of a hybrid-rubber-modified epoxy system was investigated. The modified epoxy included amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) rubber and recycled tire particles as fine and coarse modifiers, respectively. The results of the fracture toughness (K IC) measurement of the blends revealed synergistic toughening in the hybrid system when 7.5-phr small particles (ATBN) and 2.5-phr large particles (recycled tire) were incorporated. Transmission optical micrographs showed different toughening mechanisms for the blends; fine ATBN particles increased the toughness by increasing the size of the damage zone and respective plastic deformation in the vicinity of the crack...

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 61, Issue 9-12 , 2012 , Pages 901-909 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Koohbor, B ; Serajzadeh, S
    Abstract
Effect of deformation path change on the static strain aging of low carbon steel was studied in this work. In the first stage, strip samples were subjected to cold rolling processes under different paths with the same total reduction in thickness while the deformation behaviors of the rolled samples were also evaluated using a mathematical analysis. Then, cold-rolled strips were aged in room temperature up to 45 days while hardness and tensile evaluations were performed to assess the mechanical properties of the as-rolled and the aged samples. Finally, the influence of rolling pass schedule on the subsequent strain aging phenomenon was investigated by means of the experimental results and...

    Abstract
The sliding frictional contact problem for a laterally graded half-plane has been considered. Two finite element (FE) models, in macro and micro scales have been developed to investigate the effective parameters in contact mechanics of laterally graded materials loaded by flat and triangular rigid stamps. In macro scale model, the laterally graded half-plane is discretized by piecewise homogeneous layers for which the material properties are specified at the centroids by Mori-Tanaka method. In micro scale model, functionally graded material (FGM) structure has been modeled as ideal solid quadrant particles which are spatially distributed in a homogeneous matrix. Boundary conditions and...

    Abstract
In this paper, a transient-dynamic analysis is presented for large deformation of powder forming process. The technique is employed using the contact friction algorithm and plasticity behavior of powder. The contact algorithm is applied by imposing the contact constraints and modifying the contact properties of frictional slip through the node-to-surface contact algorithm. A double-surface cap plasticity model is used for highly nonlinear behavior of powder. In order to predict the non-uniform density and stress distributions during powder die-pressing, the numerical schemes are examined for accuracy and efficiency in modeling of a set of powder components

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials, 29 July 2011 through 31 July 2011 ; Volume 110-116 , July , 2012 , Pages 1696-1700 ; 16609336 (ISSN) ; 9783037852620 (ISBN) Niaki, S. A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Stress distribution in Carbon Nanotube (CNT) reinforced composites is studied using nonlocal theory of elasticity. Two nearby CNTs are modeled as two circular inclusions embedded in an infinite elastic medium, and classical stresses are obtained using the complex stress potential method. Nonlocal stresses are calculated using nonlocal integral elasticity equation. Effects of the distance between CNTs as well as effects of the nonlocal parameters on the stress distribution and stress concentration are studied. For unit normal stress at infinity, stress at the interface of the CNT and matrix increases from 0.1 for classical analysis to 0.85 for nonlocal analysis. Furthermore, when two CNTs...

Scattering of an anti-plane shear wave by an embedded cylindrical micro-/nano-fiber within couple stress theory with micro inertia

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 58 , April , 2015 , Pages 73-90 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Goodarzi, A ; Delfani, M. R ; Haftbaradaran, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The inadequacy of traditional theory of elasticity in describing such a phenomenon as dispersion associated to a propagating wave with wavelength comparable to the intrinsic length of the medium of interest is well-known. Moreover, under certain circumstances it is incapable of capturing all the propagating waves. A remedy to such dilemmas is the employment of the more accurate higher order continuum theories which give rise to the appearance of at least one new characteristic length in the formulation. The experimental evidences as well as lattice dynamic analysis suggest that, although higher order continuum theories result in some improvements, but cannot fully overcome the...

    Abstract
Conventional tooth implants lacks the damping prosperities of the periodontal ligaments (PDL) compound. It may therefore, disrupts the natural function of implant and leads to excessive stress and strain in jaw bone. Our new proposed implant has the viscoelastic properties needed to overcome such difficulties. A three dimensional finite element model of modified implant was developed and was subjected to dynamic loading condition. Our results so far indicate that the use of a class of material exhibiting viscoelastic behaviour as a damping layer can reduce the peak stress and displacement deduced from cyclic and impact loads. The stress distribution becomes more uniform in the alveolar crest...

    Abstract
Architectural modification of aluminum matrix composites is considered as an efficient method to improve fracture toughness. Al-DRA (Al-Al/SiC/20 p) composites were fabricated via "powder extrusion-casting- ingot extrusion" route with structures similar to that of reinforced concrete, so that DRA rods were surrounded by unreinforced aluminum. The effects of variation in shape, size, and number of DRA rods on fracture behavior of Al-DRA composites were investigated. Composites containing DRA rods with hexagonal cross-section exhibited higher resistance to crack initiation and growth, in comparison to those containing circular rods. In the case of hexagonal rods, increasing the number of rods...

    Abstract
Shot peening is the most common surface treatment employed to enhance the fatigue performance of structural metallic materials and often carried out after other surface treatments. This paper mainly focuses on the effects of initial conditions of surface such as initial stress filed and hardness profile on shot peening residual stress field. The residual stress distribution induced by shot peening is obtained using Hertzian contact theory and elastic–plastic evaluation after yielding occurred during impingement and rebound of shots. Elastic plastic calculations are performed using different hardening models considering Bauschinger effect. The present model is able to predict redistribution...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new numerical model that can add a finite element mesh into each block of the three-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis (3-D DDA), originally developed by Gen-hua Shi. The main objectives of this research are to enhance DDA block's deformability. Formulations of stiffness and force matrices in 3-D DDA with conventional Trilinear (8-node) and Serendipity (20-node) hexahedral isoparametric finite elements meshed block system due to elastic stress, initial stress, point load, body force, displacement constraints, inertia force, normal and shear contact forces are derived in detail for program coding. The program code for the Trilinear and Serendipity hexahedron...
