, Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Vol. 590 , 2014 , pp. 507-513 ; ISSN: 09258388 ; Akhavan, O ; Moradlou, O ; Nien, Y. T ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Vertically aligned ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructure films with various loadings of CdS nanoparticle shell were synthesized and applied in photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria under visible light irradiation. While neither the bare ZnO nanorods (with band-gap energy (Eg) of ∼3.28 eV) under visible light irradiation nor the nanorod heterostructures in dark exhibited any significant antibacterial activity, the ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructures (with Eg ∼2.5-2.6 eV) could successfully inactivate the bacteria under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, it was found that an optimum loading of the CdS shell (corresponding to the effective thickness less than ∼15 nm) is required to achieve...

TiO2 nanotubular fibers sensitized with CdS nanoparticles
, Article EPJ Applied Physics ; Volume 50, Issue 2 , 2010 ; 12860042 (ISSN) ; Taghavinia, N ; Aghabozorg, H. R ; Iraji Zad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this study TiO2 nanotubular fibers were prepared and subsequently loaded with CdS nanoparticles to obtain visible light activate nanofibers with modified structure. Preparation of TiO2 fibers was based on templating method and Liquid phase deposition technique (LPD) with cellulose fibers as templates. Using LPD, thickness of the TiO2 layer could be controlled precisely by adjusting the reaction conditions, therefore after removal of the template, the resulting material has a fibrous structure, mimicking the cellulose fibers shape. CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by thermochemical growth method and attached to TiO2 fibers through impregnation method. The pure composite nanofibers were...
The two-step thermochemical growth of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals and a study of luminescence evolution
, Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 20, Issue 9 , 2009 ; 09574484 (ISSN) ; Marandi, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Houshiar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
In this work we report a new thermochemical method for the synthesis of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals. Zn(NO3)2 and Na2S 2O3 were used as the precursors and Mn(NO 3)2 was the source of impurity. Thioglycerol (TG,C 3H8O2S) was also used as the capping agent and the catalyst of the reaction. Na2S2O3 is a heat sensitive material which releases S species upon heating. Consequently, the reaction proceeds in temperatures higher than room temperature. The reaction was done in two steps. In the first step, the precursors were heated at 96 °C for an hour without TG. In the second step, TG was injected to the solution and the heating process was continued for longer heating durations. A fast growth occurred in...
The separation of cadmium from zinc with a synergistic mixture of nonylsalicylic acid and triisobutylphosphine sulphide

Abstract
Metal pH50 and ΔpH50 values were determined and compared for a number of organic systems to select a synergistic system for the separation of Cd from Zn. The largest ΔpH50(Zn-Cd) value was obtained with HRJ-4277 (nonylsalicylic acid)/Cyanex 471X (triisobutyl phosphine sulphide or TIBPS) system and reached 1.53 pH units, indicating excellent separation of Cd from Zn with this system. Shellsol 2046 was chosen as the diluent of the system due to its larger ΔpH50(Zn-Cd) and excellent phase separation compared with other diluents. Distribution isotherms and subsequent McCabe-Thiele diagrams indicate that 99% Cd could be extracted in two stages at pH 3.80 and A / O ratio of 1.5 : 1. The extraction...

Abstract
Equations of state based on the statistical associating fluid theory for potentials of variable range (SAFT-VR) and the perturbed chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) have been used to model the PVT behavior of ionic liquids and the solubility of H2S in six imidazolium-based ionic liquids. The studied systems included [bmim][PF6], [hmim][PF6], [bmim][BF4], [hmim][BF4], [bmim][NTF2] and [hmim][NTF2] at various temperatures and pressures. For pure components, parameters of the models have been obtained by fitting the models to experimental data on liquid densities; the average relative deviation between the calculated and experimental densities for ionic liquids is less than...

Abstract
We report a new method of growing Mn-doped CdS (CdS:Mn) nanoparticles in an aqueous solution at boiling temperature. The idea is to use precursors that react only at high temperature, in order to gain crystalline luminescent nanoparticles. CdSO4, Mn(NO3)2 and Na 2S2O3 were used as the precursors, and thioglycerol was employed as the capping agent and also the reaction catalyst. Na2S2O3 is thermally sensitive and it releases S2- ions upon heating. The CdS:Mn nanoparticles obtained are about 4 nm in size and show both cubic and hexagonal crystalline phases with a ratio of 35% to 65%. The luminescence of nanoparticles contains a peak at 580 nm, which is related to Mn2+ ions. Prolonged reaction...
Thermal control of the size and crystalline phase of CdS nanoparticles
, Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 17, Issue 15 , 2006 , Pages 3812-3816 ; 09574484 (ISSN) ; Taghavinia, N ; Marandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2006
Abstract
CdS nanoparticles were grown using CdSO4 and Na 2S2O3 as the precursors and thioglycerol (TG) as the capping agent. TG was shown to exhibit a catalytic role in the reaction and also acted as a capping agent. It was demonstrated that size growth is linearly related to the temperature of the reaction, i.e.the sizes can be controllably adjusted by temperature. The crystalline phase of the nanocrystals was also dependent on the temperature of growth: higher temperature favours the cubic phase. The pH also plays an important role in nanoparticle growth, as lower pH leads to a higher release rate of sulfur species. At pH as high as 10, the growth rate remains slow even at boiling temperature. This...

Abstract
In this study the effects of initial concentration of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions as well as initial pH on the bioleaching of a low-grade sphalerite ore in a leaching column over a period of 120 days with and without bacteria were investigated. Four different modifications of medium were used as column feed solutions to investigate the effects of initial concentration of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions on zinc extraction. The experiments were carried out using a bench-scale, column leaching reactor, which was inoculated with mesophilic iron oxidizing bacteria, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, initially isolated from the Sarcheshmeh chalcopyrite concentrate (Kerman, Iran). The effluent solutions were...
The effect of target annealing temperature on optical and structural properties and composition of CdS thin films prepared by pulsed laser

Abstract
We studied the effect of target annealing temperature on optical and structural properties and composition of CdS thin films prepared by pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Deposited samples from annealed targets at 300 °C showed a mixed cubic and hexagonal structure, a band gap of about 2.56 eV and Cd/S ratio equal 1. This ratio increased to 2.40 and its band gap decreased to 2.46 eV when the sample was annealed at 500 °C for 1 h in air. However, films prepared from annealed targets at 500 °C became dark due to existence of polymorphous phase of CdO. Films changed to transparent yellow color with a hexagonal CdS structure and some peaks related to CdO after annealing above 250 °C in air. Its band gap...

Abstract
The design of 3-dimensional (3-D) nanostructured materials on the novel current collectors has recently considered as a promising strategy for developing high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, in the first step, a novel 3-D nickel nanocone arrays (NCAs) are synthesized on the surface of nickel plate (NP) by a one-step electrodeposition method without using any template (NCAs-NP). Then, a simple and efficient method is developed for fabricating ternary metal sulfides electrodes based on the electrodeposition of nickel cobalt iron sulfide (Ni-Co-Fe-S) ultrathin nanosheets on the surface of NCAs-NP. Taking advantages of the unique flower like structure of Ni-Co-Fe-S ultrathin nanosheets and...

Abstract
The morphological manipulation, structural characterization, and optical properties of different CdSe nanocrystals were reported. Several different CdSe nanostructures, including nanowires, tetrapod crystals, and nanoparticles were grown by varying the volume ratio of triethylenetetraamine (TETA) and water (WA) in their mixed solution. By manipulating the growth driving force (i.e., the degree of supersaturation) and kinetics of the process (i.e., growth rate), the morphology and crystal structure of CdSe nanocrystals can be tailored. Growth driving force changed their morphology from nanowires to tetrapod structures and from the latter structure to nanoparticles. Moreover, kinetics of the...

Abstract
We have synthesized CdS nanocrystals (NCs) by a microwave activated method. CdSO4 and Na2S2O3 were used as the precursors and thioglycolic acid (TGA) was used as capping agent molecule. The aqueous synthesis was based on the heat sensitivity of Na2S 2O3. In this method, microwave irradiation creates the activation energy for dissociation of Na2S2O3 and leads to the CdS NCs formation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses demonstrated hexagonal phase CdS NCs with an average size around 3 nm for sample prepared at 5 min irradiation time. A band gap range of 3.38-2.89 eV was possible only by increasing the microwave irradiation time, corresponding to a...

Abstract
Reaction of the binucleating S-protected ligand precursors 2-(N,N-dimethylthiocarbamato)-5-methylisophthalaldehyde di-2′-hydroxy anil (I) and 2-(N,N-dimethylthiocarbamato)-5-methylisophthalaldehyde di-2′-hydroxy 5′-methyl anil (II) with nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate in the presence of pyrazole afforded the binuclear nickel(II) complexes [LINi2(pz)] (1) and [LIINi2(pz)] (2), respectively. The complexes have been characterized by routine physicochemical studies as well as by X-ray single crystal structure analysis. In both complexes, Ni(II) ions are doubly bridged by the thiophenolic sulfur of the pentadentate Schiff base ligand and a pyrazolate group. Efficient protocols for the oxidation...

Abstract
The reactions of FeCl3·3H2O and 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-5,6-dihydro-1,3-oxazine (N-O) as a bidentate O, N donor ligand afforded a five-coordinated iron(III) complex, [Fe(N-O) 2Cl], with a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. The complex [Fe(N-O)2Cl] was isolated as an air-stable crystalline solid and was fully characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The complex [Fe(N-O)2Cl] shows very efficient reactivity in the oxidation of sulfides to their corresponding sulfoxides using urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) as the oxidant at room temperature under air. To get an insight into the electronic structure of the complex, the experimental studies have been accompanied...
