    Abstract
Parametric resonance is a phenomenon caused by time-varying changes in the parameters of a system which may result in undesirable motion responses and instability. Floating bodies like ships and spar-buoys are prone to Mathieu instability mainly due to the instantaneous change of the metacentric height. With the fast-growing developments in Ocean Renewable Energy systems, spar-buoys are commonly used for wave energy convertors and floating wind turbines. Undesirable, unstable motions as a result of the parametric resonance can be problematic as it may cause inefficiency in operations and structural risk integrity. In this research, a new approach has been developed to investigate these...

    Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...

Transient response of the flexible blade of horizontal-axis wind turbines in wind gusts and rapid yaw changes

    Abstract
In this paper, the aeroelastic analysis of a large scale wind turbine rotor is performed with the aim of studying transient performance of turbine in extreme wind conditions, such as wind gusts and rapid yaw changes. The effect of the presence and/or lack of blade pitch control system on output power, rotor thrust, and blade deformation in sudden change of wind speed are investigated. The NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine is used as the baseline case. In this regard, the modal approach is implemented for modeling the flexible blade structure with tension, bending and torsion degrees of freedom. The unsteady vortex lattice method is employed to obtain the aerodynamic loads. Moreover, the...
