Modeling of unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) in distribution systems load flow

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 50, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 1578-1585 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Hosseini, M ; Shayanfar, H. A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents modeling of unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) in load flow calculations for steady-state voltage compensation. An accurate model for this device is derived to use in load flow calculations. The rating of this device as well as direction of reactive power injection required to compensate voltage to the desired value (1 p.u.) is derived and discussed analytically and mathematically using phasor diagram method. Since performance of the compensator varies when it reaches to its maximum capacity, modeling of UPQC in its maximum rating of reactive power injection is derived. The validity of the proposed model is examined using two standard distribution systems consisting...

    Abstract
In this paper, a common energy harvester is investigated which uses a specimen of magnetic shape memory alloy (MSMA). The aim of this study is to improve system performance and to evaluate the magneto-mechanical loading on the MSMA material. Since demagnetization effect is not included in the employed original MSMA model, a method to incorporate this effect is proposed which has a good performance for the specific magneto-mechanical loading of this problem. In order to decrease the need for bias magnetic field and increase system efficiency, a new return mechanism for the MSMA specimen is proposed. The results indicate that the maximum harvested power from the improved system is obtained at...

A heuristic-based approach for reliability importance assessment of energy producers

    , Article Energy Policy ; Vol. 39, issue. 3 , 2011 , Pages 1562-1568 ; ISSN: 03014215 Akhavein, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reliability of energy supply is one of the most important issues of service quality. On one hand, customers usually have different expectations for service reliability and price. On the other hand, providing different level of reliability at load points is a challenge for system operators. In order to take reasonable decisions and obviate reliability implementation difficulties, market players need to know impacts of their assets on system and load-point reliabilities. One tool to specify reliability impacts of assets is the criticality or reliability importance measure by which system components can be ranked based on their effect on reliability. Conventional methods for determination of...

Reliability enhancement in switching substations using fault current limiters

    Abstract
Power system equipments are normally designed for a specific system and load situation. This situation could change significantly as a result of the system expansion or aging. Among the system equipments, circuit breakers are more sensitive to the system expansion and they must be able to isolate the faulty components if a fault occurs. As the system load increases in the future, the power network must be expanded. In this situation, either the switching equipments must be replaced in order to be able to respond to the new fault current or the fault current must be limited to the interrupting capability of the existing circuit breakers. Application of Fault current Limiters (FCL) serves as a...
