    Abstract
Distributed static series compensator (DSSC) is a member of the family of distributed flexible AC transmission system devices that can be attached directly to conductors of transmission lines. DSSCs are able to compensate for and adjust the line reactance; thus, they could be widely used in stability-limited transmission systems. Owing to economic matters, the optimal placement of DSSCs is of a great interest from practical viewpoints. This study presents an approach to find the optimal locations of DSSCs to enhance the system loadability and reliability using the DC load flow model. The optimisation problem is solved using the mixed-integer linear programming. A compromise between improving...

    2008
    Abstract
In the new deregulated environment of electric power utility industry, new system reliability criteria and analytical tools are required. This paper proposes an analytical probabilistic model for reliability evaluation of competitive electricity markets. The market reliability is evaluated by using Markov state space diagram. Since the market is a continuously operated system, the concept of absorbing states is applied to it in order to evaluate the reliability. The market states are identified by using market performance indices and the transition rates are calculated by using historical data. To illustrate interesting feature of the proposed methodology, a case study is carried out over a...

    Abstract
Determination of the surface structure using the light reflection is an important issue. The aim is to study such surface reflections using an opto-mechanical system. The effects of the fiber arrangements in the operation of an opto-pair probe system for surface profiling are described. The opto-mechanical testing system consists of a double-fiber optical probe design and an electro-mechanical scanning system. Reflection signals for the plane and cylindrical surfaces made with different curvatures and materials are investigated with both probes and the results are compared. The reflection signal for the plane surface is independent of the double-fiber orientation in probe but for the curves...

    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
One of the most important issues in modal estimation of power systems using PMUs data is the negative effect of outliers. Hence, in addition to the techniques of analyzing PMUs data, the necessity of implementing some kinds of approach to overcome these outliers is tangible. This paper aims to present different approaches to overcome outliers and also estimate the electromechanical modes of the system accurately when there is suspicion that the PMUs data may be contaminated by discordant measurements. Proposed approaches are generally categorized into two main classifications: the first category detects and modifies outliers in the pre-processing stage adaptively and then prepares the...

Reliability-based maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems

    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Vol. 22, issue. 5 , 2014 , p. 1147-1158 ; ISSN: 13000632 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Shahzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems is a collaborative and interactive process between independent system operators (ISOs) and generating companies (GENCOs). The ISO should comply with GENCO maintenance preferences subject to targeted system reliability levels. This process might be multistage since the admission of all initial unit outage requests may threaten system reliability. Hence, the ISO accepts some proposals and determines alternatives for the remaining units. The GENCOs are then allowed to confirm the alternatives or revise them. In this paper the ISO problem of generating unit maintenance scheduling is tackled. The objective function is to...

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 37 , 2009 , Pages 734-740 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Salehi Dobakhshari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents a reliability-based approach to select appropriate wind turbine types for a wind farm considering site-specific wind speed patterns. An actual wind farm in the northern region of Iran with the wind speed registration of one year is studied in this paper. An analytic approach based on total probability theorem is utilized in this paper to model the probabilistic behavior of both turbines' availability and wind speed. Well-known probabilistic reliability indices such as loss of load expectation (LOLE), expected energy not supplied (EENS) and incremental peak load carrying capability (IPLCC) for wind power integration in the Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS) are examined. The...

    Abstract
This paper provides a novel bad data detection processor to identify false data injection attacks (FDIAs) on the power system state estimation. The attackers are able to alter the result of the state estimation virtually intending to change the result of the state estimation without being detected by the bad data processors. However, using a specific configuration of an artificial neural network (ANN), named nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX), can help to identify the injected bad data in state estimation. Considering the high correlation between power system measurements as well as state variables, the proposed neural network-based approach is feasible to detect any potential FDIAs....

    Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to find an upgrade plan for a microgrid. This plan includes system lines' upgrades, the place, and size of the new capacitors and DERs. As usual, the planning process is begun with the load forecasting. The main objectives include minimization of system upgrade cost, loss cost, loss cost in peak load, and finally demand cost. The last objective is realized here using the tap changer of the main station transformer and reactive power support of the sources available or planned for the future of the grid. This is always referred to as the conservation of voltage reduction. In order to consider the effects of bus voltages on the system demand, the ZIP model for...

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 9, Issue 9 , 2015 , Pages 828-837 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Ghorani, R ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Dehghanian, P ; Li, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Competition in the electric power industry urges utilities to not only reduce the investment costs, but also to reasonably cut the operation and maintenance expenses as much as possible, while keeping both power quality and reliability requirements met. Reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) has been proven to be in response to this dilemma in power systems and has been yet successfully applied in various engineering contexts. This study introduces a novel approach, as of the first steps of RCM implementation in composite power generation and transmission systems, to identify the critical components for the main sake of a more focused maintenance management. Criticality evaluation is, here,...

    Abstract
With high growth rate of demand for energy in different societies, the need for energy resources has been increased significantly. This has resulted in introduction of new energy resources, i. e. renewable energy resources in generation sector of energy systems. However, the intrinsic features of these energy resources call for higher flexibility in different sectors of energy systems. Flexibility in a comprehensive sense tries to cover the amount of imbalance between production and demand in energy systems. This paper has attempted to introduce the concept of operational flexibility in microgrids and it also has presented a step-by-step algorithm to assess this operational index based on a...

Combined model of mass-transfer coefficients for clean and contaminated liquid-liquid systems

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 50, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 4608-4617 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Haghdoost, A ; Dehkordi, A. M ; Darbandi, M ; Shahalami, M ; Saien, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mass-transfer rates to and from drops in liquid-liquid extraction processes are often reduced by the presence of contaminants. To design an industrial extractor, it is essential to consider this contamination effect in a quantitative manner. To achieve this goal, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mass transfer into single drops for n-butanol-succinic acid-water, as the recommended test system by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). The effects of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, DTMAC), and nonionic (octylphenol decaethylene glycol ether, Triton X-100) surfactants on the hydrodynamic and mass-transfer...

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 28-34 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Hajian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Amraee, T ; Mozafari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for state estimation. At first, an optimal measurement set is determined to achieve full network observability during normal conditions, i.e. no PMU failure or transmission line outage. Then, in order to consider contingency conditions, the derived scheme in normal conditions is modified to maintain network observability after any PMU loss or a single transmission line outage. Observability analysis is carried out using topological observability rules. A new rule is added that can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified Binary Particle Swarm Optimization...

    Abstract
This paper is concerned about the optimal placement of phasor measurement units (PMUs) so as to make a system completely observable. Observability assessment is done by the aid of the topological observability rules. Moreover a new rule is added which can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified binary particle swarm is used as an optimization tool for obtaining the minimal number of PMUs and corresponding configuration. In order to improve the speed of convergence, an initial PMU placement is provided by graph-theoretic procedure. The simulation results of proposed approach are presented for several IEEE test systems

    Abstract
This paper presents a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problems. The main distinction of this approach is in using particle's worth experience in stead of the best previous experience. The proposed approach is evaluated on the IEEE 30-bus test system which minimizes the total fuel cost considering operational constraints such as power flow equations, transmission flow limits, bus voltages and reactive power of generators. The results obtained using the proposed approach are compared with results of other optimization methods

    Abstract
A reasonable amount of spinning reserve is essential to satisfy system security constraints when the power system encounters a contingency. Most ofthe methods previously developed for spinning reserve assessment ignore the probabilistic aspects of system components. This paper presents the design of a market for energy and spinning reserve services. This dispatching method has been developed to minimize the cost associated with theses services while maintaining the system security. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used for determining the global optimal solution for this dispatch problem. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is examined by application to the IEEE Reliability Test...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a particle swarm optimization based algorithm for locating series FACTS devices in deregulated electricity markets in order to reduce and manage congestion. Line outage sensitivity factors are used to reduce the solution space and to pinpoint the lines which are more suitable for FACTS device placement. Total congestion cost and total generation cost are the two objective functions that are employed in the optimization process. In order to verify and validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was applied to IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 57-bus test systems. The results obtained by the proposed method were compared with those of congestion rent contribution method
