    Abstract
We demonstrate for the first time the application of p-NiFe2O4/n-Fe2O3 composite thin films as anode materials for light-assisted electrolysis of water. The p-NiFe2O4/n-Fe2O3 composite thin films were deposited on planar fluorinated tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass as well as on 3D array of nanospike (NSP) substrates. The effect of substrate (planar FTO and 3D-NSP) and percentage change of each component (i.e., NiFe2O4 and Fe2O3) of composite was studied on photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation reaction. This work also includes the performance comparison of p-NiFe2O4/n-Fe2O3 composite (planar and NSP) devices with pure hematite for PEC water oxidation. Overall, the nanostructured...

    Abstract
Transition metal oxides are being more frequently used as hole injection layer (HIL) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), in place of polymer HILs such as PEDOT:PSS. The very thin films of the metal oxide HILs are usually deposited using vapor deposition, in order to create uniform films. Here, we report OLEDs fabricated using solution processed MoOx films as the HIL and super yellow as the emissive layer. The performance of the devices is comparable to PEDOT:PSS based devices, while the stability tests show the lifetime of MoOx-based devices is 4 × 106 h, about 40 times longer than PEDOT:PSS devices, at typical working condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates both...

    Abstract
The main challenge in many applications of acetic acid is acid dehydration and its recovery from wastewater streams. Therefore, the performance of polyamide thin film composite is evaluated to separate acetic acid from water. To reach this goal, the formation of polyamide layer on polysulfone support membrane was investigated via interfacial polymerization (IP) of meta-phenylenediamine (MPD) in water with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) in hexane. Also, the effect of synthesis conditions, such as concentration of monomers and curing temperature on separation of acetic acid from water were investigated by reverse osmosis process. Moreover, the separation mechanism was discussed. The solute...

    Abstract
This paper presents solid-state ligand exchange of spin-coated colloidal lead sulfide quantum dot (PbS QD) films by methylammonium iodide (MAI) and integration of them in depleted heterojunction solar (DHS) devices having an antireflecting (AR) nanocone plastic structure. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements determine a shorter lifetime of the charge carries on a semiconductor (TiO2) electron transfer layer for the MAI-passivated QD films as compared with those with long-chain aliphatic or short thiol ligands. Consequently, the DHS device yields improved power conversion efficiency (>125%) relative to oleic-acid-passivated PbS QD films. Using anodized aluminum oxide templates, an...

    Abstract
Today manufacturing of high efficiency chalcogenide thin film solar cells is based on high cost vacuum-based deposition processes at high temperature (>500 °C) and in chalcogen -containing atmosphere. In this paper, we introduce a simple vacuum-free and selenization-free, solution processing for fabricating a superstrate-type CuInS2 (CIS) solar cell. The absorber, buffer and blocking layers were all deposited by spin coating of molecular precursor inks. We demonstrate the deposition of In2S3 buffer layer by sol-gel spin casting for the first time. The rapid sintering process of CIS layer was carried out at 250 °C that is considered a very low temperature in CIGS thin-film technologies. A...

Axisymmetric response of a bi-material full-space reinforced by an interfacial thin film

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 90 , July , 2016 , Pages 251–260 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Ahmadi, S. F ; Samea, P ; Eskandari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Analytical treatment of a linear elastic isotropic bi-material full-space reinforced by an interfacial thin film under axisymmetric normal loading is addressed. The thin film is modeled as an extensible membrane perfectly bonded to the half-spaces. By virtue of Love's potential function and Hankel integral transform, elastic fields of the system are explicitly written in the form of semi-infinite line integrals. The analytical results are verified by the special cases corresponding to the surface stiffened half-space and classical bi-material problem. The limiting cases of reinforced homogeneous full-space and inextensible membrane are presented and discussed. The proposed formulation is...

    Abstract
Recently, photoelectrochemical conversion (PEC) of water into fuel is attracting great attention of researchers due to its outstanding benefits. Herein, a systematic study on PEC of water using CuFe2O4/ α-Fe2O3 composite thin films is presented. CuFe2O4/ α-Fe2O3 composite thin films were deposited on two different substrates; (1) planner FTO glass and (2) 3-dimensional nanospike (NSP). The films on both substrates were characterized and tested as anode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction. During PEC studies, it was observed that the ratio between two components of composite is crucial and highest PEC activity results were achieved by 1:1 component ratio (CF-1) of...

    Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulation was used to study of mechanical properties of NiTi/Cu bilayer by nanoindentation and tensile testing. A comparison has been made among mechanical properties measured and plastic deformation process at different copper thickness during nanoindnetation and tensile test of the samples. Embedded atom method potentials for describing of inter-Atomic interaction and Nose-Hoover thermostat and barostat are employed in the simulation at 400 K. The results showed that as the copper film thickness decreased, the maximum load and hardness values increased during nanoindetation. Saha and Nix model is used to describe reduced young's modulus behaviour of the bilayer system...

    Abstract
In this paper, we have studied the properties of SrTiO3 thin films which have been deposited on Si/Ti/Pt substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique. The as-deposited films were annealed at temperature of 700 °C in oxygen environment for 1 h. The surface morphology, crystalline phase and chemical composition of the films were characterized by AFM, XRD and XPS techniques, respectively. The XRD data show that phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline structure happens and also the lattice constant enhances during annealing process. This enhancement can be related to oxygen vacancies in thin films. The XPS data show partial lack of titanium atoms on the surface. The AFM analysis...

    Abstract
A very simple and well-controlled procedure was employed to prepare CdS nanoparticle/few-layer MoS2 nanosheet/Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film heterostructures. To tune and fabricate the CdS/MoS2(t)/ITO thin films with various surface topographies, first electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was used to deposit MoS2 nanosheets on the ITO substrate under an optimized applied potential difference (8 V) for different deposition times (t) of 30, 60, 120 and 240 s. Then, CdS nanoparticles were deposited via a successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The highest photo-current density of 285 μA cm-2 was measured for the CdS/MoS2(60 s)/ITO sample, which was about 2.3 times higher...

    Abstract
In order to improve the performance of thin film devices, it is necessary to characterize their mechanical, as well as electrical, properties. In this work, a model is developed for analysis of the mechanical and electrical properties and the prediction of residual stresses in thin films of silver nanoparticles deposited on silicon substrates. The model is based on inter-particle diffusion modeling and finite element analysis. Through simulation of the sintering process, it is shown how the geometry, density, and electrical resistance of the thin film layers are changed by sintering conditions. The model is also used to approximate the values of Young's modulus and the generated residual...

Thermal residual stresses in silicon thin film solar cells under operational cyclic thermal loading: A finite element analysis

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 135 , 2016 , Pages 366-373 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Namvar, A ; Dehghany, M ; Sohrabpour, S ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
In manufacturing amorphous silicon solar cells, thin films are deposited at high temperatures (200-400 °C) on a thick substrate using sputtering and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) methods. Since the thin films and substrate have different thermal expansion coefficients, cooling the system from deposition temperature to room temperature induces thermal residual stresses in both the films and substrate. In addition, these stresses, especially those having been induced in the amorphous silicon layer can change the carrier mobility and band gap energy of the silicon and consequently affect the solar cell efficiency. In this paper, a 2D finite element model is proposed to...

    Abstract
Dielectric scattering particles have widely been used as embedded scattering elements in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to improve the optical absorption of the device. Here we systematically study rodlike and spherical core-shell silica@Ag particles as more effective alternatives to the dielectric scattering particles. The wavelength-scale silica@Ag particles with sufficiently thin Ag shell support hybrid plasmonic-photonic resonance modes that have low parasitic absorption losses and a broadband optical response. Both of these features lead to their successful deployment in light trapping in high-efficiency DSCs. Optimized rodlike silica@Ag@silica particles improve the power conversion...

Improving the photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide/ZnO nanorod films by UV irradiation

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 371 , 2016 , Pages 592-595 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Rokhsat, E ; Akhavan, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) sheets with a low concentration (∼1 wt%) were deposited on surface of hydrothermally synthesized ZnO nanorod films. The deposited films were heat treated at 450 °C in order to achieve suitable GO/ZnO hybrid thin films for photocatalytic purposes. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite films was investigated based on degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye which is a typical pollutant model. The GO/ZnO hybrid thin films could degrade higher MB (∼90%) than the bare ZnO nanorods (which showed only ∼75% degradation) after 450 min UV irradiation. A further significant improvement (resulting in a nearly complete degradation of MB) was achieved by exposing the GO/ZnO...

Stress gradient interpretation of boundary layers in passivated thin films

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 81 , 2016 , Pages 139-146 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Zamani, Z ; Soleymani Shishvan, S ; Assempour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
A continuum implementation of stress gradient plasticity is established to analyze passivated thin films under tension. It is verified and evaluated by investigation of the tensile response of passivated Cu films with different thicknesses and grain sizes. The material parameters are fitted to the stress-strain experimental data, while the length scale parameter is directly characterized from the corresponding available discrete dislocation predictions. The numerical solutions give rise to boundary layers near the interface between film and passivation. This prediction is consistent with the formation of dislocation pileups at the film-passivation interface and also is responsible for the...

New insight into H2S sensing mechanism of continuous SnO2-CuO bilayer thin film: A theoretical macroscopic approach

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 120, Issue 14 , 2016 , Pages 7678-7684 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Boroun, Z ; Ghorbani, M ; Moosavi, A ; Mohammadpour, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
SnO2-CuO is one the most promising systems for detection of detrimental H2S gas. Although previous experimental research has suggested a sulfidation reaction to explain selectivity toward H2S, little is known about the origin of change of electrical response of this system by changing the H2S gas concentration. In this study the relation between sensing response of continuous SnO2-CuO bilayer thin film and H2S gas concentration is computed based on changeability of chemical composition of covellite CuxS. For this purpose, chemical activity of sulfur as a function of atomic fraction in covellite copper sulfide is estimated using Gibbs energies of formation and chemical thermodynamics. By...
