    Abstract
The main function of a fired heater in a petrochemical site is to produce supersaturated steam. Due to extremely difficult working conditions and high temperatures, there is a very high probability of failures in different parts of a fired heater. In the fired heater under study, tube guides are frequently damaged due to malfunctions and fractures in bolt connections. To investigate the nature of such fractures, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element (FE) method, Charpy impact test and fractography were used. To obtain the temperature of various components of the fired heater, a CFD analysis was carried out by considering the combustion process and modeling the central and side...

The effect of plugging of tubes on failure of shell and tube heat exchanger

    , Article Engineering Failure Analysis ; Volume 104 , 2019 , Pages 545-559 ; 13506307 (ISSN) Farrahi, G. H ; Chamani, M ; Kiyoumarsioskouei, A ; Mahmoudi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In shell and tube heat exchangers, deep cracks can occur in tube-to-tubesheet welding and repairing such cracks is an impossible task which makes these tubes totally out of service. To preserve the thermal and mechanical integrity of heat exchanger, a series of rods is passed through these tubes and then are welded to tubesheets from both ends. Due to the increased damages in the vicinity of plugged tubes, the effect of plugging the tubes in the surrounding tubes and tubesheet failure is investigated. To this end, using CFD analysis, the temperature and pressure were calculated throughout the heat exchanger and then, the deformations and stresses of the tubes and tubesheets were computed...

Effect of residual stress on failure of tube-to-tubesheet weld in heat exchangers

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions A: Basics ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2019 , Pages 112-120 ; 17281431 (ISSN) Farrahi, G. H ; Minaii, K ; Chamani, M ; Mahmoudi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
Materials and Energy Research Center  2019
    Abstract
In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the failure of tube-to-tubesheet welds results in high-pressure water jet which erodes the refractory in front of the tubesheet. Finite element method was employed to simulate the welding process and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the factors affecting the failure in tube-to-tubesheet weldments. Residual stresses in two different geometries of tube-to-tubesheet weldment were calculated through uncoupled thermal-structural analysis. The results showed that the values of residual stresses are higher in heat exchanger of site 1 than site 2 due to more weld passes and geometry of connection. Also, the maximum stress in site 1 occurs at the shellside...

    , Article Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 130, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 0412091-0412097 ; 00949930 (ISSN) Farrahi, G. H ; Hosseinian, E ; Assempour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper a general variable material property (VMP) formulation for the solution of thick-walled tubes with constant axial strains was developed and compared with the alternative VMP method that is called the Hencky program The VMP method was initially developed for the analysis of plane stress and plane strain states. However, the actual autofrettage process is under constant axial strain, i.e., open-end and closed-end conditions. Results indicate very good agreement with the Hencky program. Our method is simple, accurate, and very efficient, so that the number of iterations for convergence reduces approximately to one-tenth of Hencky program iterations. The solution algorithm for...

Entropy generation minimisation analysis of cross-flow heat exchangers used in indirect evaporative air conditioners

    , Article International Journal of Exergy ; Volume 6, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 61-79 ; 17428297 (ISSN) Eslamian, M ; Heydari, A ; Ghezelbash, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, entropy generation in heat exchangers used in Indirect Evaporative Coolers (IDECs) is studied. First, expressions for the rate of entropy generation in tube-type and plate-type cross-flow heat exchangers used as IDECs are obtained. Then, by introducing appropriate geometric constraints and employing thermohydraulic design equations, the variation of the rate of entropy generation within the heat exchangers is investigated. The maximum EER, outlet temperatures and the optimum sizes are obtained for several cases. The results of several experiments conducted on an optimum tube-type experimental prototype are presented and compared with the numerical data. Copyright © 2009...

    Abstract
In this paper, the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of a Fe3O4 ferrofluid flow was experimentally investigated inside a cupric u-shaped tube on a horizontal surface, under the effect of a variable magnetic field. The inlet flow regime was laminar and considered under the thermal boundary conditions of the tube with a uniform heat flux, which was affected by the variable magnetic field in some regions. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of parameters such as volume fraction of nanoparticles, Reynolds number of the flow, the radius of the curvature, and magnetic field frequency at three levels and four factors in the flow behavior in order to increase the convection heat...

    Abstract
Most of the vehicle pollutants during emission tests are raised from catalyst inefficiency during cold start. Catalysts usually convert harmful emissions only when their temperature reaches around 250 °C to 350 °C. In this research, the vortex tube is implemented to recover the waste heat energy of exhaust gas during the cold start to improve catalyst heating. The experiments are conducted on the turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine to extract the boundary conditions of numerical simulations. Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of different hot exhaust mass fractions on the flow regime and waste heat recovery. The results reveal that the level of turbulence...

Application of inverse finite element method in tube hydroforming modeling

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 37, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 5913-5926 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Einolghozati, M ; Shirin, M. B ; Assempour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In tube hydroforming, the inverse finite element method (IFEM) has been used for estimating the initial length of tube, axial feeding and fluid pressure. The already developed IFEM algorithm used in this work is based on the total deformation theory of plasticity. Although the nature of tube hydroforming is three-dimensional deformation, in this paper a modeling technique has been used to perform the computations in two-dimensional space. Therefore, compared with conventional forward finite element methods, the present computations are quite fast with no trial and error process. In addition, the solution provides all the components of strain. Using the forming limit diagram (FLD), the...

An exact analysis for the hoop elasticity and pressure-induced twist of CNT-nanovessels and CNT-nanopipes

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Volume 82 , 2015 , Pages 47-62A ; 01676636 (ISSN) Delfani, M. R ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with and without end caps may be used for fluid storage and transport, respectively, referred to as CNT-nanovessel and CNT-nanopipe. The determination of the stiffness in the hoop (circumferential) and radial directions, ideal hoop strength, and hoop stress-strain curve of such nanostructures is of particular interest. Due to the proposed viewpoint, a chiral free-standing single-walled CNT (SWCNT) has a natural angle of twist and natural extension along the axis of the tube. For example, for the SWCNT (9,3) with diameter of 0.85 nm and chirality angle of 13.9°, the natural angle of twist per unit length is 1.45×10-3 rad/nm. Previously, only Vercosa et al. (2010) who...

A numerical study of swage autofrettage of thick-walled tubes

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 804-815 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Bihamta, R ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Mashreghi, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2007
    Abstract
Swage autofrettage process is used for internal forming and sizing of thick-walled tubes designed to withstand high internal pressures. In this process, a mandrel with a diameter slightly larger than that of the tube is pressed inside the tube and in so doing, creates the internal profile. This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of this process. Two dimensional axi-symmetric and three dimensional finite element analyses are used to investigate the effects of workpiece and mandrel geometry on the forming load and part quality. Experiments are carried out to validate the numerical results. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
A considerable amount of energy is lost in the parabolic trough solar collectors due to the poor capability of working fluid in full absorption of the concentrated solar irradiation across the receiver tube. A new hybrid method is recommended here to cover up such deficiency by simultaneously using a rotary absorber tube and magnetic field inducer with nanofluid. Results showed that the combination effects of the receiver rotation and the magnetic field improve the convection mechanism in the absorber and increase both energetic and exergetic performance of the collector. The study reveals that there is an optimal rotational speed in the each magnetic field intensity for different...

    Abstract
Flat plate solar collectors lose a massive part of heat accumulated near the contact region because of the poor thermal characteristics of the working fluid. A new cost-effective design is numerically studied to cover up such deficiency by equipping the flat plate collector with revolutionary tubes and magnetic field inducer to affect Fe3O4/water working nanofluid in the collector tubes. Results substantiate that each of the applied rotary tubes and magnetic field inducer improves the convection mechanism in the tubes by circulating the flow inside the tubes and saves more of available solar energy. Results reveal that 27.8% and 10.44% of lost energy are restored in the solar collector...

    Abstract
In this article, a novel solar still which is equipped with thermoelectric modules to utilize the heat of vapor condensation is experimentally investigated. The use of thermoelectric modules as devices for generating electricity from the temperature difference between two environments (hot vapor steam and cold ambient air) as well as taking outstanding advantages of evacuated tubes as collectors with high performances in adverse climatic conditions, led to utilizing of the energy dissipated due to vapor condensation and a considerable increase in the performance of the system. The effect of using the generated electricity to operate a small propeller fan for inducing forced convection was...

Nanoscopic spontaneous motion of liquid trains: Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation

    , Article Journal of Chemical Physics ; Volume 132, Issue 2 , 2010 ; 00219606 (ISSN) Bahrami, A. H ; Jalali, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Macroscale experiments show that a train of two immiscible liquid drops, a bislug, can spontaneously move in a capillary tube because of surface tension asymmetries. We use molecular dynamics simulation of Lennard-Jones fluids to demonstrate this phenomenon for NVT ensembles in submicron tubes. We deliberately tune the strength of intermolecular forces and control the velocity of bislug in different wetting and viscosity conditions. We compute the velocity profile of particles across the tube and explain the origin of deviations from the classical parabolae. We show that the self-generated molecular flow resembles the Poiseuille law when the ratio of the tube radius to its length is less...

    Abstract
Baseboard heaters are a type of building heating systems that are placed along the base of the interior wall, instead of the traditional skirting. Baseboard heaters meet all the requirements of modern buildings such as thermal comfort, well-architected appearance, space-saving, efficient energy consumption, and fast thermal response. In the present study, we investigate the enhancement of the thermal output of hydronic baseboard heaters. For this purpose, several novel fin-tube arrays such as convector fins and fin-clips are proposed and the thermal performance of each array is evaluated experimentally. In addition, two different types of materials for the tubes, namely, copper and aluminum...

    , Article Journal of Chromatography A ; Volume 1218, Issue 26 , 2011 , Pages 3952-3957 ; 00219673 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Piri-Moghadam, H ; Es'haghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this work a novel unbreakable sol-gel-based in-tube device for on-line solid phase microextraction (SPME) was developed. The inner surface of a copper tube, intended to be used as a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) loop, was electrodeposited by metallic Cu followed by the self assembled monolayers (SAM) of 3-(mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (3MPTMOS). Then, poly (ethyleneglycol) (PEG) was chemically bonded to the -OH sites of the SAM already covering the inner surface of the copper loop using sol-gel technology. The homogeneity and the porous surface structure of the SAM and sol-gel coatings were examined using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and adsorption/desorption...

A semi-analytical study on helical springs made of shape memory polymer

    , Article Smart Materials and Structures ; Volume 21, Issue 4 , 2012 ; 09641726 (ISSN) Baghani, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Arghavani, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, the responses of shape memory polymer (SMP) helical springs under axial force are studied both analytically and numerically. In the analytical solution, we first derive the response of a cylindrical tube under torsional loadings. This solution can be used for helical springs in which both the curvature and pitch effects are negligible. This is the case for helical springs with large ratios of the mean coil radius to the cross sectional radius (spring index) and also small pitch angles. Making use of this solution simplifies the analysis of the helical springs to that of the torsion of a straight bar with circular cross section. The 3D phenomenological constitutive model...

    Abstract
The absorber is an important component in absorption machines and its characteristics have significant effects on the overall efficiency of absorption machines. This article reports on the results of numerical studies on the characteristics of falling film LiBr-H2O solution on a completely wetted horizontal tube and the associated vapor absorption in the Reynolds number range of 5 < Re < 100. The boundary layer assumptions are used for the transport of mass, momentum and energy equations and the finite difference method is employed to solve the governing equations in the film flow. The heat and mass transfer coefficients are expressed in the forms of Reynolds number, Prandtl number and...
