, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafarian, Mohammad (Author) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important problems in using wind energy is the estimation of wind energy potential of a region with acceptable accuracy. To use wind energy and convert it to electrical energy it is necessary to study the economical aspects of wind farm installation, and to choose an appropriate wind turbine to be installed in a region. To do such a study and to choose approperiate wind turbine, annual energy output of different wind turbines should be estimated in that region. The porpuse of this thesis is to develop new methods to estimate annual energy production of a wind turbine by using some of the parameters of wind speed pattern of a region such as wind speed average, wind speed...

Numerical Simulation of the Effects of Surface Curvature on the Cooling of Vertically-Injected Jet Layers into a Lateral Turbulent Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shalchi Tabrizi, Amir (Author) ; Taiebi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ramezanizadeh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An improvement of thermal efficiency of modern gas turbines is achieved by increasing turbine inlet temperatures. One of the methods of turbine cooling is to form a film layer on the external surfaces of the blades, so that they can work at high temperatures. Most of the studies concentrate on flat plate geometries with injection through slots or rows of holes. Turbine blade surfaces usually have curvatures which seem to alter the flow field significantly on the film-cooled surfaces. However, there are few reports which investigate the effect of curvature on three-dimensional jet flow injected into the turbulent boundary layer over a curved surface. The surface curvature and the blowing...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghanbari, Mahdi (Author) ; Nouri, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, the use of gas turbines with low capacity have acceptance in large quantity. This type of gas turbines with a capacity of approximately 5-200kW are known as microturbines. This type of turbines due to the existence of limitations on increasing of turbine inlet temperature and compressor pressure ratio has low efficiency compared to the turbine with high capacity. Therefore the use of a recuperator in the cycle is necessary. Optimum design of heat recuperator has important effect on improving of gas turbine cycle efficiency. In this project for optimum design of heat recuperator, the effect of recuperator on gas turbine cycle efficiency is studied. By determining geometric...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefpour, Hossein (Author) ; Montazeri, Morteza (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Gas turbine engine control is a demanding task that requires the regulation of the thrust as well as the satisfaction of the limitations such as engine aerodynamic instability, over temperature and over speed. Fuzzy logic is an attractive technique for the control of poor understood unmodeled, or complex systems especially where the experience of human operators is available to provide qualitative rules. In such cases, it has been found that control decisions can be made on the basis of linguistic measures or fuzzy algorithms. The controller that is designed on the basis of this theory is called fuzzy logic controller. The main objective of this thesis is hardware implementation of fuzzy...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhadi Azar, Roozbeh (Author) ; Taeibi-Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ramezanizadeh, Mahdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The interactions between jets and cross flows appear in many engineering applications (such as film cooling) and thus their study is of great importance. In film cooling, the coolant fluid is transferred from the compressor to the surface of the turbine blades via small holes. An increase of about 170⁰C of the engine working temperature increases the engine efficiency about 5%. To reach higher temperatures of the inlet air flow, one tries to have the least amount of interactions between the film cooling jets and the the cross flow. In this work, we computationally studied turbulent film cooling of a flat plate, in which we used the combined triple jet and investigated the effects of density...

    , Article Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power ; Vol. 136, Issue. 5 , 2014 ; ISSN: 07424795 Salehi, R ; Vossoughi, G ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Estimation of relevant turbocharger variables is crucial for proper operation and monitoring of turbocharged (TC) engines, which are important in improving fuel economy of vehicles. This paper presents mean-value models developed for estimating gas flow over the turbine and the wastegate (WG), the wastegate position, and the compressor speed in a TC gasoline engine. The turbine is modeled by an isentropic nozzle with a constant area and an effective pressure ratio calculated from the turbine upstream and downstream pressures. Another physically sensible model is developed for estimating either the WG flow or position. Provided the WG position is available, the WG flow is estimated using the...

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Vol. 76, Issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 1693-1709 ; ISSN: 0924090X Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the presence of harmonic disturbances, boiler-turbine units may demonstrate quasi-periodic behaviour due to the occurrence of various types of bifurcation. In this article, a nonlinear model of boiler-turbine unit is considered in which drum pressure, electric output and drum water level are controlled via manipulation of valve positions for fuel, steam and feed-water flow rates. For bifurcation control in tracking problem, two controllers are designed based on gain scheduling and feedback linearization (FBL). To investigate the efficiency of control strategies, three cases are considered for desired tracking objectives (a sequence of steps, ramps/steps, and a combination of them)....

The new model is experimentally validated with transient and steady state data collected from a 1.7 liter gasoline engine. The results show the new model can predict the turbine mass flow with an average error of 1.4%. In addition, the application of the turbine model is illustrated for the design of a nonlinear observer to estimate the turbocharger...

Nonlinear dynamics of the unit is investigated through the concepts of bifurcation and limit cycles behaviour. In the presence of harmonic disturbances, some coefficients of the dynamic model, fuel and steam flow rates play as the bifurcation parameters....

Low voltage ride-through capability improvement of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dips

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 60,Issue , 2014 , pp. 82-95 ; ISSN: 01420615 Rahimi, M ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a competent and effective scheme to enhance the ride-through capability of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The proposed method is realized through joint use of the rotor-side converter control and a three-phase stator damping resistor (SDR) placed in series with the stator windings. By means of an asymmetrical SDR idea, during the unbalanced voltage dip the SDR resistors are activated only in phase(s) experiencing low voltage. Then, the rotor current is controlled such that no unbalance voltage appears on the stator voltage. The proposed ride-through approach limits the peak values of the rotor inrush current, electromagnetic torque and...

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Vol. 110 , May , 2014 , p. 64-72 ; ISSN: 03787796 Tohidi, S ; Tavner, P ; McMahon, R ; Oraee, H ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Shao, S ; Abdi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) has been proposed as a viable alternative in wind turbines to the commonly used doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The BDFIG retains the benefits of the DFIG, i.e. variable speed operation with a partially rated converter, but without the use of brush gear and slip rings, thereby conferring enhanced reliability. As low voltage ride-through (LVRT) performance of the DFIG-based wind turbine is well understood, this paper aims to analyze LVRT behavior of the BDFIG-based wind turbine in a similar way. In order to achieve this goal, the equivalence between their two-axis model parameters is investigated. The variation of flux linkages,...
