    Abstract
A series of low speed wind tunnel tests on a section of a 660 Kw wind turbine blade which is under constructer were conducted to examine the effects of distributed surface contamination on its performance characteristics. At first model was tested in the clean condition and after that it was tested with tree different types of roughness. The data shows that this particular airfoil is very sensitive to the applied surface roughness. For the contaminated model the roughness, 0.5mm height was distributed over the entire upper surface of the airfoil such that the distribution pattern was denser in the vicinity of the leading edge and thinner in the trailing edge area. Statistical data show that...

    Abstract
An extensive experimental study is conducted to investigate the effects of reduced frequency on a harmonically pitching wing where its cross section is used in a 660 kW wind turbine under construction in Iran. The corresponding lift coefficient and real time pressure signatures at three sections of the model at various reduced frequencies are examined. The test covers a wide range of angles of attack at prestall, stall, and deep stall regions. Pressure distributions at tip, middle, and root sections of the wing were recorded and from these distributions the lift coefficients are computed. The results show great role of the reduced frequency in altering the maximum lift coefficients, lift...

    Abstract
Extensive low speed wind-tunnel tests were conducted to study the unsteady aerodynamic behaviour of an airfoil sinusoidally oscillating in plunge. The experiments involved measuring the surface pressure distribution over a range of amplitudes, H = ±5 to ±15cm. In addition, steady state data were acquired and were used to furnish a baseline for further analysis and comparison. The model was oscillated with a constant reduced frequency, k = 0.058, at three mean angles of attack of 0°, 10° and 18°. The unsteady aerodynamic loads were calculated from the surface pressure measurements, 64 ports, along the chord for both upper and lower surfaces of the model. The plunging displacements were...

    Abstract
Extensive wind tunnel tests have been conducted to investigate effects of turbulence intensity variations on the behavior of a section of a wind turbine blade in an oscillatory motion. Special emphasize was applied on the aerodynamic characteristics when oscillating the model in the vicinity of its static stall angle of attack and in the post stall condition. The model had 0.25m chord and was pitched about its quarter-chord. Data were acquired at various Reynolds number, and reduced frequency. Results show that turbulent intensity has strong effect on the unsteady load coefficients, hence aerodynamic performance of this model. Furthermore, free stream turbulence has different effect on the...

    2006
    Abstract
The power output of gas turbines reduces greatly with the increase of inlet air temperature. Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) is employed for cooling of the inlet air of a gas turbine. Water from a confined aquifer is cooled in winter, and is injected back into the aquifer. The stored chilled water is withdrawn in summer to cool the gas turbine inlet air. The heated water is then injected back into the aquifer. A 20 MW Hitachi gas turbine, along with a two-well aquifer were considered for analysis. It was shown that the minimum power output of the gas turbine on the warmest day of the year could be raised from 16.30 to 20.05 MW, and the mean annual power output could be increased from...

    Abstract
Advanced gas turbine cycles use advanced blade cooling technologies to reach high turbine inlet temperature. Accurate modeling and optimization of these cycles depend on blade cooling model. In this study, different models have been used to simulate gas turbine performance. The first model is the continuous model and the second is stage-by-stage model with alternative methods for calculating coolant, stagnation pressure loss and SPR. Variation of specific heat and enthalpy with temperature are included in both models. The composition of gas stream in turbine is changed step by step due to air cooling. These models are validated by two case study gas turbine results, which show good agreement...

    Abstract
Film cooling of surfaces appears in many applications. For instance, it is one of the most effective methods to improve the efficiency of gas turbines. As a fundamental study, two different types of film cooling (slot and discrete holes injections) are numerically simulated here. A flat surface is used to model a small portion of a gas turbine blade. Incompressible, stationary, viscous, turbulent flow is assumed using the STAR-CD software with the standard k-ε model and a cell-centered finite volume method on a nonuniform structured grid. The jet flow Reynolds number, based on the jet's hydraulic diameter, is 4.7 × 103. The study of the injection angle and the velocity ratio shows that the...

Internalizing the social cost of noise pollution in the cost analysis of electricity generated by wind turbines

    , Article Wind Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2006 , Pages 521-529 ; 0309524X (ISSN) Ehyaei, M. A ; Bahadori, M. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The Social Cost of nuisance noise from a wind turbine is defined here as the additional cost to reduce the noise level at a receptor to an exceptable, non-nuisance value, i.e. to mitigate this cost. This acceptable sound level is considered to be 35 dB. Our example is a 10-kW (nominal power) wind turbine considered to supply the electrical energy needs of a 3-storey residential building in Tehran and Manjil. The turbine generates sound at 75 dB. To reduce the sound level at the third floor of the building to 35 dB, it was necessary to increase the height of the turbine from 24 m to 48 m. The initial installed cost of the turbine thereby increased from US$45.000 to US$55,000. The cost of...

Wind farm power output optimization using cooperative control methods

    , Article Wind Energy ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 502-514 ; 10954244 (ISSN) Deljouyi, N ; Nobakhti, A ; Abdolahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We study the application of cooperative control and game theoretic approaches to wind farm optimization. The conventional (greedy) wind farm control strategy seeks to individually maximize each turbine power. However, this strategy does not maximize the overall power production of wind farms due to the aerodynamic interactions (wake effect) between the turbines. We formulate the wind farm power optimization problem as an identical interest game which can also be used to solve other cooperative control problems. Two model-free learning algorithms are developed to obtain the optimal axial induction factors of the turbines and maximize power production. The algorithms are simulated for a...

    Abstract
Three novel methods, named α, ζ and ϵ, are suggested in this paper to recover the performance loss during switching in the gas turbine control systems. The Minimum Command Selection (MCS) in the gas turbine control systems prompts this performance loss. Any step towards more productivity with less aging factors have a great impact on the gas turbine's lifetime profit and vice versa. Although many hardware upgrades have been studied and applied to accomplish this, in many cases a low-risk manipulation in the software may yield equivalent achievement. State of the art gas turbine control systems are supposed to handle various forms of disturbances, several operation modes and relatively high...

    Abstract
In this research, to overcome the challenging problem of the vibration suppression in the wind turbine blade, an active robust adaptive finite-time model reference controller is introduced. First, edgewise vibrations of the wind turbine blade, with consideration of the platform heave displacements, is modeled by Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Then, the appropriate adaptation laws and control laws are introduced to compensate the uncertainties and guarantee the convergence to the desired reference model. The robustness and convergence of the designed adaptation and control laws are mathematically proved via finite-time Lyapunov theory. Performance of the designed robust adaptive finite-time...
