, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Saryazdi, Mohammad (Author) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Rajabi, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Recently, a lot of attention has been devoted to the use of Darrieus wind turbines because of high power density and environment aspect in urban areas. Turbine airflows don’t effect on the power coefficient of Darrieus turbine. This turbine has an acceptable power coefficient depend on the other wind turbine in the small scale turbine. Aerodynamic performance of a Darrieus turbine is very complex due to phenomena such as dynamic stall and changing forces on the turbine caused by changing horizontal angles. So study airflows around turbine must be preformed. In this thesis the aerodynamics of an H-rotor vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been studied using computational fluid dynamics in...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohajer, Abbas (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Taiebi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the negative effects of contamination on wind turbine blade performance, we investigate aerodynamics performance of a one- Megawatt wind turbine. To achieve this, we compare the performance and power of the wind turbine with and without contaminations. To calculate the wind turbine output power, we use a developed wind turbine calculator, which benefits from the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. Furthermore, the aerodynamics calculations are performed using of a commercial software for clean and rough airfoils. Considering the change of Reynolds number along the blade axis, the airfoil characteristics are calculated for two Reynolds numbers of 0.5 and 3.5 millions to increase...

    Abstract
Wind is one of the clean energies available in the world which its damage to the environment is less than other renewable resources. One of technologies of generating energy from wind is the small turbines installed in city area. However, installing these turbines in cities may encounter with problems such as low speed of wind and high turbulence in the air causing aero-dynamic noise. If the turbines are installed in a bad place in cities, their electricity generation might be zero. Among important parameters that affect the performance of the turbines installed in the roof is the formation of the building, the buildings around, and the location of wind turbine. If the buildings’...

    Wind Turbines (VAWT)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nasehi, Ali (Author) ; Sattari, Sorna (Supervisor) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This project aims to investigate environmental effect –such as dust and rain- on the performance of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). However, those issues are frequently investigated in the horizontal axis wind turbines, but this subject has not been studied in vertical axis wind turbines. Impact of rain or dust particles on the turbine blades can change the turbine performance. So consideration of the impact of environmental factors on the performance of wind turbines is very important. Vertical axis wind turbines, particularly the straight bladed VAWT are widely used in wind power generation in agricultural and rural lighting and the use of this type of turbines is increasing...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faraji Nayeh, Reza (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Moradi, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Advanced control techniques are required to achieve a cost-effective and reliable use of the wind power generation. The wind turbines are generally controlled based on two control objectives: the turbine protection and the generation of acceptable power for the utility grid. These objectives are achieved if the control inputs are applied based on appropriate control logics. In this work, a nonlinear multivariable model of the wind turbine with a DFIG generator is considered. The rotor speed and the d-axis rotor current (as the control outputs) are controlled via manipulation of the two generator voltages (as the control inputs) in low wind velocity condition. For high wind velocity, the...

The Effect of Wind Turbine Rotor Deflection on Its Aerodynamic Performance Using Actuator Disc Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali, Ramin (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An aerodynamical model for studying asymmetric and three-dimensional flow fields about wind turbine rotors is presented. The developed algorithm combines a asymmetric and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with a so-called actuator disc technique in which the loading is distributed along lines representing the blade forces. The loading is determined iteratively using a bladeelement approach and tabulated airfoil data. Computations are carried out for a 5MW NREL wind turbine equipped with three blades. The computed power production is found to be in good agreement with measurements. The computations give detailed information about basic features of wind turbine wakes, including...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefpour, Hossein (Author) ; Montazeri, Morteza (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Gas turbine engine control is a demanding task that requires the regulation of the thrust as well as the satisfaction of the limitations such as engine aerodynamic instability, over temperature and over speed. Fuzzy logic is an attractive technique for the control of poor understood unmodeled, or complex systems especially where the experience of human operators is available to provide qualitative rules. In such cases, it has been found that control decisions can be made on the basis of linguistic measures or fuzzy algorithms. The controller that is designed on the basis of this theory is called fuzzy logic controller. The main objective of this thesis is hardware implementation of fuzzy...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhadi Azar, Roozbeh (Author) ; Taeibi-Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ramezanizadeh, Mahdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The interactions between jets and cross flows appear in many engineering applications (such as film cooling) and thus their study is of great importance. In film cooling, the coolant fluid is transferred from the compressor to the surface of the turbine blades via small holes. An increase of about 170⁰C of the engine working temperature increases the engine efficiency about 5%. To reach higher temperatures of the inlet air flow, one tries to have the least amount of interactions between the film cooling jets and the the cross flow. In this work, we computationally studied turbulent film cooling of a flat plate, in which we used the combined triple jet and investigated the effects of density...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarparandeh, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to reduce damage caused by power outages on rare events that lead to long-term disconnection of microgrid from utility grid, isolated mode performance of microgrids including wind and hudro turbines with energy storage systems is considered in this study. Using wind energy as a renewable resource is considered as an appropriate choice for power production in microgrids. However, the uncertainty in wind turbines power generation is something challenging. The existence of water resources near the wind farms causes a special opportunity for operation of these resources along with wind turbines. This thesis aimed at balancing energy supply and demand in island mode of microgrid,...
