    , Article Journal of Biomedical Materials Research - Part B Applied Biomaterials ; Volume 105, Issue 7 , 2017 , Pages 1874-1882 ; 15524973 (ISSN) Praveen Kumar, G ; Jafary Zadeh, M ; Tavakoli, R ; Cui, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Self-expandable stents are widely used to restore blood flow in a diseased artery segment by keeping the artery open after angioplasty. Despite the prevalent use of conventional crystalline metallic alloys, for example, nitinol, to construct self-expandable stents, new biomaterials such as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are being actively pursued to improve stent performance. Here, we conducted a series of analyses including finite element analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the feasibility of using a prototypical Zr-based BMG for self-expandable stent applications. We model stent crimping of several designs for different percutaneous applications. Our results indicate...

Regioselective diversification of 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes: unlocking isosteric space via C-H activation

    , Article Journal of Organic Chemistry ; Volume 82, Issue 15 , 2017 , Pages 8072-8084 ; 00223263 (ISSN) Davies, G. H. M ; Jouffroy, M ; Sherafat, F ; Saeednia, B ; Howshall, C ; Molander, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Methods for the regioselective C-H borylation and subsequent cross-coupling of the 2,1-borazaronaphthalene core are reported. Azaborines are dependent on B-N/C=C isosterism when employed in strategies for developing diverse heterocyclic scaffolds. Although 2,1-borazaronaphthalene is closely related to naphthalene in terms of structure, the argument is made that the former has electronic similarities to indole. Based on that premise, iridium-mediated C-H activation has enabled facile installation of a versatile, nucleophilic coupling handle at a previously inaccessible site of 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes. A variety of substituted 2,1-borazaronaphthalene cores can be successfully borylated and...

Preparation and characterization of starch-based composite films reinforced by cellulose nanofibers

    , Article International Journal of Biological Macromolecules ; Volume 116 , 2018 , Pages 272-280 ; 01418130 (ISSN) Fazeli, M ; Keley, M ; Biazar, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
The current study deals with the preparation and characterization of polysaccharide-based biocomposite films acquired by the incorporation of cellulose nanofiber within glycerol plasticized matrix formed by starch. The application of starch-based films is limited due to highly hydrophilic nature and poor mechanical properties. These problems are solved by forming a nanocomposite of thermoplastic starch (TPS) as matrix and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as reinforcement. CNF is successfully prepared from short henequen fibers which consist of almost 60% cellulose by a chemo-mechanical process. TPS/CNF composite films are prepared by the polymer solution casting method, and their characterizations...

    Abstract
We report the development of an efficient, customized spherical indentation-based testing method to systematically estimate the hydraulic permeability of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels fabricated in a wide range of mass concentrations and photocrosslinking conditions. Numerical simulations and Biot's theory of poroelasticity were implemented to calibrate our experimental data. We correlated elastic moduli and permeability coefficients with different GelMA concentrations and crosslinking densities. Our model could also predict drug release rates from the GelMA hydrogels and diffusion of biomolecules into the three-dimensional GelMA hydrogels. The results potentially provide a design...

Origin of apparent light-enhanced and negative capacitance in perovskite solar cells

    , Article Nature Communications ; Volume 10, Issue 1 , 2019 ; 20411723 (ISSN) Ebadi, F ; Taghavinia, N ; Mohammadpour, R ; Hagfeldt, A ; Tress, W ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
So-called negative capacitance seems to remain an obscure feature in the analysis of the frequency-dependent impedance of perovskite solar cells. It belongs to one of the puzzling peculiarities arising from the mixed ionic-electronic conductivity of this class of semiconductor. Here we show that apparently high capacitances in general (positive and negative) are not related to any capacitive feature in the sense of a corresponding charge accumulation. Instead, they are a natural consequence of slow transients mainly in forward current of the diode upon ion displacement when changing voltage. The transient current leads to a positive or negative ‘capacitance’ dependent on the sign of its...

    Abstract
Mitochondria is a major regulator of inducing tumor apoptosis and it is as a prime target for chemotherapy. Anticancers need to access specific tumor cells and also pass through different barriers such as outer and inner membranes of mitochondria. Targeted accumulation of paclitaxel (PTX) within the mitochondria was achieved by direct conjugation of PTX with triphenylphosphonium (TPP) as a mitochondrial membrane-permeable cation. PTX-TPP prodrug was synthesized by pH-sensitive ester bond between the hydroxyl function of PTX and the carboxylic function of TPP. This ester bond is only cleaved by the mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase. Prodrug was loaded in the albumin nanoparticles by...

    Abstract
Breast and prostate cancers are common types of cancers with various strategies, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, for their therapy. Since these methods have undesired side effects and poor target affinity, neoteric strategies—known as aptamer-based smart drug delivery systems (SDDSs)—have been developed in recent years to overcome the obstacles of current treatment, and investigated for a clinical trial. The high affinity and versatility of aptamers for binding to the corresponding targets make them highly noticeable agents in the drug delivery domains. In addition to their exceptional benefits, aptamers are able to overcome tumor resistance because of their high selectivity and low...

    Abstract
Nanogels are three-dimensional nanoscale networks formed by physically or chemically cross-linking polymers. Nanogels have been explored as drug delivery systems due to their advantageous properties, such as biocompatibility, high stability, tunable particle size, drug loading capacity, and possible modification of the surface for active targeting by attaching ligands that recognize cognate receptors on the target cells or tissues. Nanogels can be designed to be stimulus responsive, and react to internal or external stimuli such as pH, temperature, light and redox, thus resulting in the controlled release of loaded drugs. This “smart” targeting ability prevents drug accumulation in...
