Characterization of a microfluidic microbial fuel cell as a power generator based on a nickel electrode

    , Article Biosensors and Bioelectronics ; Volume 79 , 2016 , Pages 327-333 ; 09565663 (ISSN) Mardanpour, M. M ; Yaghmaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
This study reports the fabrication of a microfluidic microbial fuel cell (MFC) using nickel as a novel alternative for conventional electrodes and a non-phatogenic strain of Escherichia coli as the biocatalyst. The feasibility of a microfluidic MFC as an efficient power generator for production of bioelectricity from glucose and urea as organic substrates in human blood and urine for implantable medical devices (IMDs) was investigated. A maximum open circuit potential of 459mV was achieved for the batch-fed microfluidic MFC. During continuous mode operation, a maximum power density of 104Wm-3 was obtained with nutrient broth. For the glucose-fed microfluidic MFC, the maximum power density of...

A conflict resolution method for waste load reallocation in river systems

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2019 , Pages 79-88 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Aghasian, K ; Moridi, A ; Mirbagheri, A ; Abbaspour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Various urban, industrial, and agricultural pollutions discharge more than river self-purification potential damages river ecosystem and increases water treatment costs. As different decision-makers and stakeholders are involved in the water quality management in river systems, a new bankruptcy form of the game theory is used to resolve the existing conflict of interests related to waste load allocation in downstream river. The river restoration potential can allocate to the conflicting parties with respect to their claims, by using bankruptcy solution methods. In this research, dischargeable pollution loads to Karun River are determined by pollution sources in various scenarios using...

How to quantify sustainable development: A risk-based approach to water quality management

    , Article Environmental Management ; Volume 41, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 200-220 ; 0364152X (ISSN) Sarang, A ; Vahedi, A ; Shamsai, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Since the term was coined in the Brundtland report in 1987, the issue of sustainable development has been challenged in terms of quantification. Different policy options may lend themselves more or less to the underlying principles of sustainability, but no analytical tools are available for a more in-depth assessment of the degree of sustainability. Overall, there are two major schools of thought employing the sustainability concept in managerial decisions: those of measuring and those of monitoring. Measurement of relative sustainability is the key issue in bridging the gap between theory and practice of sustainability of water resources systems. The objective of this study is to develop a...

Mechanical properties of concrete containing a high volume of tire-rubber particles

    , Article Waste Management ; Volume 28, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 2472-2482 ; 0956053X (ISSN) Khaloo, A. R ; Dehestani, M ; Rahmatabadi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Due to the increasingly serious environmental problems presented by waste tires, the feasibility of using elastic and flexible tire-rubber particles as aggregate in concrete is investigated in this study. Tire-rubber particles composed of tire chips, crumb rubber, and a combination of tire chips and crumb rubber, were used to replace mineral aggregates in concrete. These particles were used to replace 12.5%, 25%, 37.5%, and 50% of the total mineral aggregate's volume in concrete. Cylindrical shape concrete specimens 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height were fabricated and cured. The fresh rubberized concrete exhibited lower unit weight and acceptable workability compared to plain concrete....

Multicomponent nanoparticles as means to improve anaerobic digestion performance

    , Article Chemosphere ; Volume 283 , 2021 ; 00456535 (ISSN) Baniamerian, H ; Ghofrani Isfahani, P ; Tsapekos, P ; Alvarado Morales, M ; Shahrokhi, M ; Angelidaki, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Sufficient quantity of trace metals is essential for a well performing anaerobic digestion (AD) process. Among the essential trace elements in active sites of multiple important enzymes for AD are iron and nickel ions. In the present study, iron and nickel in the form of Fe2O3 and NiO were coated on TiO2 nanoparticles to be used in batch and continuous operation mode. The effect of TiO2, Fe2O3–TiO2, and NiO–TiO2 nanoparticles on each step of AD process was assessed utilizing simple substrates (i.e. cellulose, glucose, acetic acid, and mixture of H2–CO2) as well as complex ones (i.e. municipal biopulp). The hydrolysis rate of cellulose substrate increased with higher dosages of the coated...
