Analytical evaluation of saturation throughput of a cognitive wlan overlaid on a time-scheduled ofdma network

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 634-647 ; 15361233 (ISSN) Rahimzadeh, P ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the saturation throughput of a cognitive WLAN overlaid on a primary OFDMA TDD network (e.g., LTE or WiMAX). In this scenario, after the contention among the secondary nodes, the winner node transmits its data packet in the empty resource blocks (RBs) of downlink and uplink subframes of the primary network. Regarding the OFDMA structure as well as time-scheduled resources in the primary network, the time duration of opportunities for the secondary network does not follow simple exponential on-off pattern. To model the dynamic behavior of opportunities for secondary nodes as well as contentions to exploit the opportunities, we propose an analytical model comprised of...

Interference management in D2D-enabled heterogeneous cellular networks using matching theory

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing ; 2018 ; 15361233 (ISSN) Shamaei, S ; Bayat, S ; Hemmatyar, A. M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2018
    Abstract
To support the increasing data traffic demand in wireless communications networks, a multi-tier architecture that consists of multiple small cells is adopted in traditional (macro) cellular networks. Nevertheless, due to the expansion of various wireless devices and services, there is still a need to increase the network capacity in new generation networks such as 5G. Hence, the integration of Device-to-Device (D2D) communication as a promising technology with heterogeneous networks has been proposed. This integration not only increases network capacity but also improves spectral efficiency and alleviates the traffic load of base stations. However, the co/cross-tier interferences between D2D...

    Abstract
In this letter, a compact, wideband, and fully planar microstrip crossover structure is proposed. This design is based on a compact microstrip to coplanar waveguide transition, which has a measured bandwidth extending from dc to 40 GHz. At 20 GHz, the measured insertion loss, return loss, and isolation are better than 0.35, 21, and 19 dB, respectively. This circuit is ultracompact with the core size of 3 mm ×3 mm, which is 0.2λ×0.2 λ at 20 GHz. © 2012 IEEE

    Abstract
The conventional time-modulated arrays (TMAs) have a low radiation efficiency, since each antenna turns off at specific time slots. In this paper, first, the efficiency of TMA is investigated analytically. Next, the optimized switching sequences are proposed to enhance the radiation efficiency of a specific sideband, while preserving the level of the other sidebands. The practical hardware limitations are considered in the switching sequence design. Moreover, a low-cost flexible eight-element printed dipole array operating at 1.2-1.4 GHz is implemented to verify the proposed algorithms. The measured radiation patterns indicate that by applying the proposed sequences, the TMA efficiency...

    Abstract
Centralized coded caching and delivery is studied for a partially-connected fog radio access network (F-RAN), whereby a set of H edge nodes (ENs) (without caches), connected to a cloud server via orthogonal fronthaul links, serve K users over the wireless edge. The cloud server is assumed to hold a library of N files, each of size F bits; and each user, equipped with a cache of size MF bits, is connected to a distinct set of r ENs; or equivalently, the wireless edge from the ENs to the users is modeled as a partial interference channel. The objective is to minimize the normalized delivery time (NDT), which refers to the worst case delivery latency, when each user requests a single file from...

    , Article 2018 Iran Workshop on Communication and Information Theory, IWCIT 2018, 25 April 2018 through 26 April 2018 ; 2018 , Pages 1-6 ; 9781538641491 (ISBN) Vaezi, K ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We consider a slotted Aloha-based wireless communication network comprising a source and an active relay, both transmitting to a common destination. The relay node is able to relay the unsuccessfully transmitted packets of the source node, if it can detect them. We find the analytical closed form optimal static relaying policy in order to minimize the average transmission delay (ATD) of source packets, while ATD of its own packets is constrained. A static relaying policy is determined by acceptance and relaying probabilities of the relay node. According to acceptance probability, the relay node decides whether to accept an unsuccessfully transmitted packet from source or not, while the...

    Abstract
Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are under active development, thanks in part to recent advances in wireless communication and networking technologies. The most fundamental part in VANETs is to enable message authentications between vehicles and roadside units. Message authentication using proxy vehicles has been proposed to reduce the computational overhead of roadside units significantly. In this message authentication scheme, proxy vehicles that verify multiple messages at the same time improve roadside units' efficiency. In this paper, first we show that the only proxy-based authentication scheme (PBAS) presented for this goal by Liu et al. cannot guarantee message authenticity, and...

Capacity-outage joint analysis and optimal power allocation for wireless body area networks

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; 2018 ; 19328184 (ISSN) Razavi, A ; Jahed, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2018
    Abstract
Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are characterized by short-range wireless communication between inherently resource-limited sensors that operate in the vicinity of the human body for recording certain physiological signals. One of the main limitations of WBANs is in terms of their available power. Since the nodes are typically battery-driven, an efficient power transmission is essential to guarantee long-lasting communications among nodes without the need for frequent battery replacement or charging. In this study, aiming to improve the WBAN performance, we first investigate the power allocation problem by choosing the ergodic capacity and the outage probability as the desired metrics....

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the cell planning problem for a two-tier cellular network containing two types of base stations (BSs)— i.e. with fiber backhaul, referred to as wired BSs (W-BSs), and BSs with wireless backhaul, referred to as unwired-BSs (U-BSs). In-band full-duplex wireless communications is used to connect U-BSs and W-BSs. We propose an algorithm to determine the minimum number of W-BSs and U-BSs to satisfy given cell and capacity coverage constraints. Furthermore, we apply our proposed non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) to solve the joint cell and backhaul planning problem to minimize the cost of planning, while maximizing the coverage simultaneously....

On Medium chemical reaction in diffusion-based molecular communication: A two-way relaying example

    Abstract
Chemical reactions are a prominent feature of molecular communication systems, with no direct parallels in wireless communications. While chemical reactions may be used inside the transmitter nodes, receiver nodes, or the communication medium, we focus on its utility in the medium in this paper. Such chemical reactions can be used to perform computation over the medium as molecules diffuse and react with each other (physical-layer computation). We propose the use of chemical reactions for the following purposes: 1) to reduce signal-dependent observation noise of receivers by reducing the signal density; 2) to realize molecular physical-layer network coding (PNC) by performing the natural XOR...

    Abstract
We propose a nano-plasmonic thin-film solar cell (TFSC) as a receiver for the visible light communication (VLC). The presented design is a novel and optimized structure that can be used instead of photodetectors and power supplies in the VLC. The plasmonic TFSC that described in this work is capable of increasing the light absorption in comparison with the conventional thick Si solar cell without plasmonic nanostructures. However, plasmonic nanoparticles can improve the absorption of Si solar cell in a visible range of solar spectra. In this paper, different situations for inserting nanoparticles in an active layer are considered and the absorption is calculated as a function of particle...

    Abstract
To cope with the unprecedented growth of mobile data traffic, we investigate the performance gains obtained from unifying coverage-centric 4G mobile networks and capacity-centric fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks based on data-centric Ethernet technologies with resulting fiber backhaul sharing and WiFi offloading capabilities. Despite recent progress on backhaul-aware 4G studies with capacity-limited backhaul links, the performance-limiting impact of backhaul latency and reliability has not been examined in sufficient detail previously. In this paper, we evaluate the maximum aggregate throughput, offloading efficiency, and in particular, the delay performance of FiWi enhanced...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of cross-layer radio resource management in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with flexible backhaul, which aims at minimizing the total transmit power of base stations (BSs) while guaranteeing the average end-To-end data rate requirement of each data flow. We formulate the problem as a two-Timescale stochastic optimisation, where the long-Timescale control variables are flow control, routing control and interference coordination, while the short-Timescale control variable is instantaneous beamforming within each cell. Using a stochastic cutting plane (SCP) method, we propose a cross-layer queue-state information (QSI) aware radio resource management...

    Abstract
In diffusive molecular communication (DMC), the transmitter has to be able to control the release of signaling molecules for modulation of the information bits. In natural cells, pumping ions is an important control mechanism for releasing molecules which is carried out by ion pumps embedded in the membrane. The activity of the ion pumps is controlled by a driving parameter. In particular, light driven pumps are controlled by light intensity and enable a high degree of spatial and temporal control for modulation functionality. In this paper, a modulator based on ion pumps is proposed for DMC which controls the release rate of the molecules from the transmitter by modulating a light intensity...

Effects of inaccuracy of material permittivities on ray tracing results for site- Specific indoor propagation modeling

, Article Proceedings of the 2013 IEEE-APS Topical Conference on Antennas and Propagation in Wireless Communications, IEEE APWC 2013 ; Sept , 2013 , Pages 1172-1175 ; 9781467356893 (ISBN) Mohtashami, V ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The complex dielectric constants of building materials are present in the reflection, transmission and diffraction coefficients of the ray tracing formulation. Any deviation of the dielectric constants included in ray tracing simulation from the actual material properties may be a source of inaccuracy of the simulation results. This paper explores the sensitivity of ray tracing results to the inaccuracy of the dielectric constants of building materials. To do this, the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constants are considered as random variables to account for the present uncertainty. The propagation of uncertainty in the ray tracing simulation is then obtained by means of the...

An overlay multicast protocol for multimedia applications in mobile ad-hoc networks

    , Article 3rd IEEE Asia-Pacific Services Computing Conference, APSCC 2008, Yilan, 9 December 2008 through 12 December 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 162-167 ; 9780769534732 (ISBN) Naderan Tahan, M ; Rabiee, H. R ; Saremi, F ; Iranmanesh, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2008
    Abstract
Overlay multicast has gained much attention in recent years as an alternative method to network layer multicast, especially for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper, we propose a new overlay multicast protocol to achieve simplicity of deployment, rapid adaptation of overlay structure when nodes move, and reduced delay. In our algorithm, to join or leave a multicast group, it is only sufficient for a member node to inform its first upstream member node. This updates the tree structure more rapidly when nodes move. In addition, join and leave delays are reduced and this makes the protocol suitable for multimedia multicasting in MANETs. Simulation results compared to that of ODMRP and...

Performance analysis of SLTC - A table path, low overhead, truthful, and cost efficient routing protocol in MANETs with selfish nodes

    , Article 3rd IEEE Asia-Pacific Services Computing Conference, APSCC 2008, Yilan, 9 December 2008 through 12 December 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 243-250 ; 9780769534732 (ISBN) Saremi, F ; Mousavi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2008
    Abstract
In New applications of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), nodes may decide not to cooperate in routing protocols in order to save their limited resources while still using the network to relay their own traffic. Exhibiting such a selfish behavior by even a few nodes may degrade network performance and other cooperating nodes may find themselves unfairly loaded. To cope with such a situation, we propose a Stable path, Low overhead, Truthful, and Cost efficient (SLTC) routing protocol which stimulates nodes to cooperate and act truthfully by utilizing the game theoretic notion of mechanism design. To the best of our knowledge, SLTC is the first protocol attaining the message complexity of O(nd),...

Fair resource allocation in Ad hoc networks in the presence of delay

    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of resource allocation at an Ad hoc network with nodes not using any infrastructure to cooperate with each other is considered. By using a simple interference model in wireless links, the convergence and stability of a fair resource allocation scheme in the absence of delay is investigated. Also, the local stability of the scheme in the presence of upper-bounded delay is verified. Simulations results illustrate the convergence and fairness of this scheme considering different initial states for different sources. The performance of the scheme in the presence of different disturbances for each flow in transient and steady state along with its local stability in the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new transport layer method is proposed utilizing a diversity scheme to make an end to end communication reliable and consequently reduce power consumption in large scale sensor networks. Sensor networks are composed of large number of battery powered nodes. Energy consumption is the most important design objective in sensor networks while delay and throughput are taken less into account. Wireless transmission is the other important characteristic of these networks. Small-scale fading decreases wireless communication performance. In a fading channel higher SNRs is needed and consequently more energy is consumed. In addition to error occurred because of poor communication...
