Experimental Investigation on the Performance of Preformed Particle Gel (PPG) in the Combined Injection of Low-Salinity Water and CO2: Conformance Control and for in the Naturally Fractured Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Excessive water production in highly heterogeneous mature reservoirs (water flooded or affected by water zones) leads to increased production costs. Water production causes sediment formation, creation of corrosion, water treatment and disposal, and finally due to the inefficiency of production, it leads to closure of the well.Among the methods introduced to reduce water production, the use of polymers and gels as an affordable and effective method has been widely used in enhanced oil recovery processes. The main mechanism in this method is blocking or limiting the major paths of water flow (fractures or high permeability zones) and thereby increasing sweep efficiency in water injection....

Abstract
Among different methods which are introduced to reduce unwanted water production, “Preformed Particle Gel” (PPG) is a recently developed type of these gels that can have important advantages such as temperature resistance and long-term stability. The aim of the present work is to synthesize a new type of PPG in which the above specifications are improved even further with the advantage of the Nano-material (here after called N-PPG) and then investigate its effectiveness via static bulk tests as well as dynamic Hele-Shaw and Micromodel tests. In static tube tests, the swelling performance of N-PPG samples was evaluated under different conditions. The examined parameters include various pH of...

Abstract
Combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) play an important role in electricity production throughout the world. Their energy efficiency is relatively high and their production rates of greenhouse gases are considerably low. In a country like Iran with huge oil and gas resources, most CCPP's use natural gas as primary fuel and diesel as secondary fuel. In this study, effect of using diesel instead of natural gas for a selected power plant will be investigated in terms of exergy, economic and environmental impacts. The environmental evaluation is performed using life cycle assessment (LCA). In the second step, the operation of the plant will be optimized using exergy and economic objective...
Performance Ehancement of Congestion Control Algorithm Through Traffic Flow Istinction
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Congestion is an important issue in the network environment. To keep stable the perfor-mance of the network, congestion control algorithms have been extensively studied. Queue management method employed by the routers is one of the important issues in the congestion control study. Active Queue Management (AQM) has been proposed for early detection of congestion inside the network. AQM mechanisms control the queue length in a router by dropping arriving packets. The Random Early Detection (RED) is the most popular AQM mechanism used in routers on the Intenet to allow network users to simultaneously achieve high throughput and low average delay. The RED algorithm may cause heavy oscillation of...
A Realistic Urban Mobility Model for Mobile Ad Hoc Network
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a set of wireless mobile nodes that form a self configured network. MANETs do not have infrastructure and are not currently deployed on large scales. So research in this area is simulation based. Mobility model in a mobile ad hoc network explains the movement pattern of mobile users and is designed to describe the change of their location, velocity and acceleration over time. One of the challenges in this field is the definition of a common mobility model that provides an accurate and realistic movement description of mobile nodes. In this thesis we want to study the mobility pattern of vehicles on Kish Island and compare it with different kinds of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tajrishy, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Arasteh, Peyman (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Estimation of runoff in the ungauged basins is a challenge for hydrologists. The main objective of this research is to produce runoff coefficient map using SCS-CN (1972) and Kennessey (1930) as empirical models to for Urmia Lake basin between for 2006-2011.Both SCS-CN and Kennessey methods use slope, land use, and soil permeability data to estimate surface runoff. Accuracy of each model is tested along with the observed runoff using the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE).Urmia Lake basin includes about 400,000 hectares irrigated land, which constitutes around 10 percent of the entire basin area. To exclude the anthropological activities from the estimations, methods were applied only for 28...

Abstract
Plasmonic metasurfaces with subwavelength nanoantenna arrays have attracted much attention for their ability to control and manage optical properties. Solar absorbers are potential candidates for effectively converting photons into heat and electricity. This study introduces a novel ultrathin metasurface solar absorber employing elliptical-shaped nanoantenna arrays. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate a near-perfect broadband absorber with over 90% absorption efficiency in a wide range of wavelengths of 300-2500 nm, using finite element (FEM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. The proposed nanostructure configuration enhances light absorption by exciting localized...
Attenuation and Scatter Correction in Whole Body Positron Emission Tomography Images using Neural Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Abolfazl (Supervisor) ; Sheikhzadeh, Peyman (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Objective: Accurate quantification in PET imaging is essential for proper evaluation and requires attenuation and scatter correction. Typically, this correction is performed using CT; however, the propagation of CT image errors to PET, the additional radiation dose in PET/CT, especially in pediatric cases and repeated scans, as well as challenges associated with standalone PET and PET/MRI, highlight the need for alternative approaches. This study investigates the capability of deep learning in jointly correcting attenuation and scatter for PET images with different radiotracers. Methods: Various neural network models, including ResNet, U-Net, and swin UNETR, were trained for direct...

Abstract
In this article, ferrohydrodynamic forced-convection heat transfer from a heated sphere embedded in a ferrofluid in the presence of the uniform external magnetic field has been studied numerically for the first time over a wide range of Reynolds number value, nanoparticle diameter, particle volume fraction, and magnetic field intensity. Despite the uniform external magnetic field applied, the internal magnetic field near the sphere could be nonuniform due to the considerable difference between the relative magnetic permeability of the sphere and the surrounding medium. Kelvin body force arises from this nonuniformity and induces vortexes near the sphere. These vortexes disturb the boundary...
A method for simulation of vapour cloud explosions based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Abstract
The effectiveness of the application of CFD to vapour cloud explosion (VCE) modelling depends on the accuracy with which geometrical details of the obstacles likely to be encountered by the vapour cloud are represented and the correctness with which turbulence is predicted. This is because the severity of a VCE strongly depends on the types of obstacles encountered by the cloud undergoing combustion; the turbulence generated by the obstacles influences flame speed and feeds the process of explosion through enhanced mixing of fuel and oxidant. In this paper a CFD-based method is proposed on the basis of the author's finding that among the various models available for assessing turbulence, the...

Abstract
This study forwards a novel and simple approach for encapsulation of Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) into MIL-101(Cr) cavities to develop PTA-MIL-101(Cr) with a high surface area. In this method, the resulting surface area of PTA-MIL-101(Cr) (3563 m2/g) is 1.72 times that of MIL-101(Cr) due to the existence of more accessible pores which are formed by leaching of PTAs incorporated inside MIL-101(Cr) pores during the intense washing. Catalysts are investigated in CO oxidation under atmospheric pressure and feed composition of 1%CO, 20%O2, and 79%He. 3%Pd/PTA-MIL-101(Cr) shows 100%CO conversion at T = 145 °C and outperforms PTA, PTA-MIL-101(Cr), Pd/PTA, 1–3%Pd/MIL-101(Cr), Pd-PTA/MIL-101(Cr), and...

Abstract
Numerous advantages of application of tailor welded blanks (TWBs) in automobile industry, namely reduction of weight, fuel consumption and air pollution, have made the manufacturers eager to investigate in this field. On the other hand, while experiments generally provide valuable information in regard with mechanical behaviors, but utilization of simulation methods has extended vastly due to time and cost saving issues. One challenging issue in numerically analyzing the forming behavior of transversely welded TWBs, welded by laser welding methods, has been the presence of weld zone. While some researchers believe that during simulation, the weld zone can be neglected due to its minority and...
A neural network applied to estimate process capability of non-normal processes
, Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 36, Issue 2 PART 2 , 2009 , Pages 3093-3100 ; 09574174 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
It is always crucial to estimate process capability index (PCI) when the quality characteristic does not follow normal distribution, however skewed distributions come about in many processes. The classical method to estimate process capability is not applicable for non-normal processes. In the existing methods for non-normal processes, probability density function (pdf) of the process or an estimate of it is required. Estimating pdf of the process is a hard work and resulted PCI by estimated pdf may be far from real value of it. In this paper an artificial neural network is proposed to estimate PCI for right skewed distributions without appeal to pdf of the process. The proposed neural...

Abstract
In static PET/CT imaging, the Standardized Uptake Value (SUV) parameter is used to evaluate diseases. The use of this parameter provides valuable information to physicians in many cases. However, this parameter has limitations and is not suitable for certain clinical applications, such as assessing treatment response and differentiating between benign and malignant tumors. In contrast, utilizing dynamic imaging systems can yield significant information through the extraction of kinetic features and quantitative analysis based on temporal data. However, the use of dynamic PET imaging in a clinical setting can be challenging due to factors such as prolonged scan times (> 60 minutes),...

Abstract
Forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are extensively used in industries, particularly the auto industry. The establishment of these diagrams using a predictive approach can lead to reduction in both cost and time. In the present work, Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN), a porosity-based model, was used to predict the FLD of an interstitial-free steel via finite element simulation. Optimum values of the GTN model were obtained by applying a response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design. Results show that RSM is a good method for an appropriate determination of the GTN model parameters, such as initial void volume fraction, effective void volume fraction, critical void volume...
