Abstract
Nature presents a variety of propulsion, maneuvering, and stabilization mechanisms which can be inspired to design and construction of manmade vehicles and the devices involved in them, such as stabilizers or control surfaces. This study aims to elucidate and compare the propulsive vortical signature and performance of a foil in two important natural mechanisms: flapping and undulation. Navier–Stokes equations are solved in an ALE framework domain containing a 2D NACA 0012 foil moving with prescribed kinematics. All simulations are carried out using a pressure-based finite volume method solver. The results of time-averaged inline force versus Strouhal number (St) show that in a given...

, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 4 B , August , 2010 , Pages 285-300 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
The most suitable and widely used numerical integration method for boundary integrals in the BEM method is Gauss-Legendre integration. But, this integration method is not appropriate for singular and nearly singular integrations in BEM. In this study, some criteria are introduced for recognizing nearly singular integrals in the integral form of the Laplace equation. At the first stage, a criterion is obtained for the constant element and, at the later stages, higher order elements are investigated. In the present research, the Romberg integration method is used for nearly singular integrals. The results of this numerical method have good agreement with analytical integration. The singular...

Abstract
Heave and pitch motion of an oscillating airfoil in uniform flow will cause generation of forwarding thrust. Applying a combination of these two motions on flexible foil, one can increase thrust and therefore the efficiency. This is the way that most fishes and other flying animals uses to consume less energy. In this paper, hydrodynamic forces and efficiency of an oscillating airfoil is investigated. A code is developed based on potential flow formulation in combination with Time Stepping Method (TSM) with nonlinear free shear layer dynamic approach to predict the wake behind the lifting bodies. A linear Morino type Kutta condition has been implemented on panels adjacent to trailing edge....

Abstract
Lake Urmia is a thalassohaline ecosystem. It is an extremely simple ecological pyramid. This makes it a very sensitive ecosystem. This ecosystem has been facing various threats regarding the amount of water released from the associated basin. To calculate the lake water requirement with an ecological approach, we identified three variables: ecology, water quality, and water quantity indices as environmental indicators. The ecological index represented by Artemia urmiana is considered as an independent variable; while, the water quality index represented by concentration of NaCl, and the water quantity index represented by water elevation are regarded as dependent variables. The salinity...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sarvari, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Recently, the size of copper interconnects is going to reach lower than the mean free path of electrons for copper. In this situation, we should consider the effect of other scattering mechanisms as well as thermal scattering on copper thin films. In this work we study both DC size effect and anomalous skin effect on resistivity by a Monte Carlo method. Contribution of each scattering mechanism and the interaction between them are analyzed separately. The structure of electrical field and distribution of current in thin films have also been studied. Investigating of the effect of exact nature of surface scattering and grain boundary scattering on resistivity is one of the interests of this...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is the presentation of an outage management scheme in a multi-microgrids system with a decentralized structure. The proposed method is designed in a two-step method to prevent damage to all microgrids and network components due to blackouts. In the first stage of this scheme, each microgrid alone provides its required power or curtails load due to the power deficiency. In the second stage, microgrids exchange power in a transactive energy environment, which is one of the new changes in active distribution systems with participation in market and price bidding, and all players of this market earn profit from their exchanges. In this case, the curtailed load will be...
