Power System Voltage Improvement through Coordinationg Reactive Power Resources on a Smart Grid Framework

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazari, Hessam (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies as distributed generation (DG) in power systems, technical problems arise in both distribution and transmission system level. Voltage rise is the main barrier for connection of DGs in rural areas, while excessive reactive power demand from transmission system is the major concern for Transmission System Operators (TSO). Here, a centralized control scheme based on the Smart Grid is proposed to reduce the impact on the transmission system voltages and improve its stability, while mitigating the voltage rise issue in the distribution network. Reactive power output of DGs, substation capacitors and tap setting of transmission transformer are...

Provision of A Framework for Distribution System Expansion Planning Considering Flexibility Requirements for Massive Integration of Renewable Sources

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi-Arpanahi, Sahand (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the challenges which increasing penetration of renewable energy sources with variable generation brings is the need for more flexibility in the power system. A promising way to overcome the challenge is to have local sources of the flexibility in distribution level. To this end, we present a new model for multi-stage distribution system expansion planning which jointly considers expanding the network assets and increasing the flexibility at local level by installing conventional dispatchable distributed generator units and energy storage systems. Demand response is also considered as another source of the flexibility which can be utilized by the system operator. Since deviating from...

    Abstract
The integration of renewable energy sources introduces several issues including islanding operation. Therefore, Islanding phenomenon should be detected by a fast and reliable islanding detection method. Decision tree classification algorithm is chosen as weak classifier and by Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), detection accuracy is improved. 16 features are employed to construct feature vectors. Because of intermittency of renewable electricity generation, different states for PV and DFIG generation are assumed. Probable events are simulated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Porkar, Siyamak (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Saadate, Shahrokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the recent years, there is a worldwide wave of considerable changes in power industries, including the operation of distribution networks. Deregulation, open market, alternative and local energy sources, new energy conversion technologies and other future development of electrical power systems must pursue different goals. Also growth in the demand and change in load patterns may create major bottlenecks in the delivery of electric energy. This would cause distribution system stress.Furthermore, in competitive electricity markets, operators determine the electricity price for specific intervals during a day, taking into account various economical and operational factors. Traditionally, a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sabouhi, Hamed (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Power generation stations, which are commonly called power plants, are treated as the core module of power systems and are in charge of producing power to be transmitted and distributed to the end consumers. As the beating heart of power industry, power plants need to be available and reliable all the time and so do their constituent components since the need for reliable electricity, nowadays, is ever increasingly highlighted. The reason lies in the rapid jump of population growth in one hand and the incredible amount of damages as a consequence to the power interruptions due to the power plant component outages, if happened, on the other one. So, power plants have to be kept within a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinzadeh, Ali (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The appearance of renewable sources has created a more diverse energy mix and has made it challenging for grid operators to maintain stability in energy systems. The concept of a virtual power plant is the integration of different energy sources into a single entity that is collected and controlled through a central energy management system. It enables these sources to participate in electricity markets. This research presents a framework for the participation of a virtual power plant (VPP) in day-ahead (DA), reserve, and real-time (RT) energy markets. VPPs face several uncertainties, such as wind turbine (WT) production, demand, the status of calling the reserve, and energy market prices....

Distance Relay Blocking in Power Restoration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sebt-Ahmadi, Mohammad (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is possible to unload a transmission line for a while. In line restoration voltage and current of the line will have some dynamic changes. So the apparent impedance of distance relay will have dynamic changes. These changes may cause some bad results including entrance of apparent impedance to the operational zones of distance relay and even relay tripping. Consequently if relay trips, the line restoration process will stop and may not be possible.
So we want an algorithm to distinguish line restoration from short circuit condition and block the relay. This algorithm must be able to stop blocking if there is any fault in the operational zones of the relay.
    In this thesis an...

Numerical Modeling of Waves Generated by Tropical Cyclone and its Effects on Oman Sea

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taeb, Peyman (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sea and ocean waves develop in various ways especially by blowing wind over them. Modeling of these waves has been in center of interest for half a century. After the pioneering study of Gelchi et al (1995), ocean wave models are generally base on a spectral energy or action balance equation. Ocean storms such as tropical cyclone will develop if the atmospheric and oceanic conditions are available. Their Rotational and transition movement causes different patterns of waves. In 2007, cyclone Gonu, a tropical cyclone that formed in Indian ocean and have steered to Oman Sea and also caused damages and casualties in southern coast of Iran. Since intense tropical cyclones such as Gonu have...

    Abstract
With regards to rapid growth of world population, coastlines have limited natural resources and capacity for human settlement. To tackle the problem the idea of constructing artificial islands could be a solution. Since the artificial islands are semi-enclosed body of water designed to attract not only tourists but also settlements, the flow current pattern and residence time of water should be studied in detail in order to ensure adequate water quality in the surrounding area. In this study, an artificial island is planned to be constructed around Kish Island in Persia Gulf. In this article the effects of different geometries on circulation and residence time of water are investigated...

    Abstract
Today, to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases on the earth, as well as reduce dependence on fossil fuels and other non-renewable sources, the international community is moving towards greater use of renewable energy. The oscillating water column device as a wave energy converter system has the ability to use and absorb energy within the waves through a chamber consisting an air and a water column. This system has the ability to move the turbine installed on the valve by expanding and compressing the air passing through the valve. Oscillating water column systems have different categories, and this high diversity makes the choice of this wave energy converter closely related to the...
