    Abstract
Understanding the potential and electric field distribution in the insulation system of a transformer during transients is vital to its construction. Therefore, we have developed a method for electric field analysis inside a power transformer. The method consists of the following steps. 1) A lumped parameter equivalent model is constructed by dividing transformer windings into several blocks. 2) The electric circuit parameters of this model are calculated. 3) Employing the results of the transformer transient model analysis as boundary conditions, a 2-D asymmetrical electric field finite-element analysis is performed to determine electric fields through the windings. The method has been...

    Abstract
Ignoring actuator dynamics in control of rigid manipulators can in practice result in performance degradation or loss of system stability. However, consideration of actuator dynamics usually requires measurement of robot joint torques. This paper addresses motion tracking control of an n-DOF rigid robot by taking into account its actuator dynamics. Joint torque measurement is avoided by using an adaptive observer. The backstepping technique is adopted to develop a dynamically smooth adaptive nonlinear controller dealing with uncertainties in manipulator and actuator dynamics. Semi-global convergence of motion tracking errors as well as torque estimation error are proven without any...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salimi Khaligh, Yahya (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ignoring actuator dynamics in control of rigid manipulators can in practice result in performance degradation or loss of system stability. However, on the other hand, consideration of actuator dynamics usually requires measurement of robot joint torques that is not cost-effective. This thesis addresses motion tracking control of an n-DOF rigid robot by taking into account its actuator dynamics. Joint torque measurement is avoided by using an adaptive observer. The novelty of this thesis is in developing a controller for robot manipulators including non-negligible actuator dynamics in presence of uncertainty in robot dynamics; without using joint torque measurement. Controller design is done...

    Abstract
In a motor-drive system, there are many factors which can be considered as a figure of merit in drive control algorithm. All of these factors should be evaluated simultaneously to achieve the reliable performance of drive. In this paper, an optimization problem is constructed on a direct torque controlled induction motor drive using a candidate from different parts of drive system: inverter loss from section of solid state converter, motor loss from section of electromechanical converter and torque ripple from mechanical section. Minimization of this cost function leads to the optimum values of drive control parameters. © 2008 IEEE

Digital video stabilization using radon transform

    , Article 2012 International Conference on Digital Image Computing Techniques and Applications, DICTA 2012, 3 December 2012 through 5 December 2012 ; December , 2012 ; 9781467321815 (ISBN) Babagholami Mohamadabadi, B ; Bagheri Khaligh, A ; Hassanpour, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Digital video stabilization is a category of techniques used to reduce the impact of unintentional camera motion such as jitter, jiggle, and other unsteady motions. These unintentional shakings degrade visual quality of videos and reduce the performance of subsequent processes such as video compression. Digital video stabilization which is performed by post processing the acquired frames, suffers from inaccuracy of motion estimation which is mostly due to the local motions of internal moving objects included in videos, and long processing time which prohibits them from being used in real time applications. In this paper we propose a fast and accurate transform based motion estimation method...

    Abstract
Sport video shot classification is a basic step in the sport video processing. For many purposes such as event detection and summarization, shot classification is needed for content filtering. In this paper, we present a new method for soccer video shot classification. At first, in-field and out-of-field frames are separated. In in-field frames three features based on number of connected components and shirt color percent in vertical and horizontal strips are extracted. The features are all new and showed excellent discrimination in the feature space. These features are given to SVM for classifying long, medium and close-up shots. One of the advantages of our method is that, close-ups can be...

Novel margin features for mammographic mass classification

    , Article Proceedings - 2012 11th International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications, ICMLA 2012 ; Volume 2 , 2012 , Pages 139-144 ; 9780769549132 (ISBN) Bagheri Khaligh, A ; Zarghami, A ; Manzuri Shalmani, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems are widely used for detection of various kinds of abnormalities in mammography images. Masses are one type of these abnormalities which are mostly characterized by their margin and shape. For classification of masses proper features are needed to be extracted. However, the number of well-known features for describing margin is much fewer than geometrical, shape, and textural ones. In addition, most of the existing margin features are highly dependent on segmentation accuracy. In this work, new features for describing margin of masses are presented which can handle inaccuracies in segmentation. These features are obtained from a set of waveforms by...

A proportional-resonant controller-based wireless control strategy with a reduced number of sensors for parallel-operated UPSs

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 468-478 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Hasanzadeh, A ; Caglar Onar, O ; Mokhtari, H ; Khaligh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel droop method to control the power sharing of parallel uninterruptible-power-supply (UPS) systems is presented. In a clear-cut contrast to the previously reported works, the controller is a proportional-resonant controller which ensures good transient response and steady-state objectives. Furthermore, the need for sensing the output current for the power-sharing control is removed by implementing it in a software routine. This brings a less complicated and less expensive structure in which the number of feedback sensors is reduced from three to two. The droop paralleling strategy is based on the drop in the inverter output frequency and amplitude. The application of...

Effects of temperature and torsion speed on torsional properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering C ; Volume 31, Issue 2 , March , 2011 , Pages 452-457 ; 09284931 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Ban, E ; Banihashemi, P ; Abdolhosseini Qomi, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are excellent candidates for torsional elements used in nanoelectro-mechanical systems (NEMS). Simulations show that after being twisted to a certain angle, they buckle and lose their mechanical strength. In this paper, classical molecular dynamics simulations are performed on single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to investigate the effects of torsion speed and temperature on CNT torsional properties. The AIREBO potential is employed to describe the bonded interactions between carbon atoms. The MD simulations clearly show that the buckling of CNTs in torsion is a reversible process, in which by unloading the buckled CNT in opposite direction, it returns to its...

    Abstract
In continuum mechanics, the constitutive models are usually based on the Cauchy-Born (CB) hypothesis which seeks the intrinsic characteristics of the material via the atomistic information and it is valid in small deformation. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the temperature effect on the stability and size-dependency of Cauchy-Born hypothesis. Three-dimensional temperature-related Cauchy-Born formulations are developed for crystalline structure and the stability and size-dependency of temperature-related Cauchy-Born hypothesis are investigated by means of direct comparison between atomistic and continuous mediums. In order to control the temperature effect, the Nose-Hoover...

    Abstract
Overlay networks have been an active area of research for the past few years. The control overhead and the recovery from failure are the two important issues in the topology aware embedded overlay networks. In this research, we have introduced an enhanced version of the NICE protocol, called resilient NICE (R-NICE) that reduces the control overhead significantly. Furthermore, by saving the join path for an end host, the time and overhead of rejoining for isolated nodes have also been reduced. This will cause the clusters and consequently the overall network to become more stable and the effect of a node failure become localized. Our experimental results have confirmed the superior...

    Abstract
Bluetooth headsets are one of the popular accessories of mobile phones because of their convenience. It is necessary to assess the impact of electromagnetic waves on the human head when a person is using a headset. In this paper different scenarios closely modeling the situations that a subject may use the headset in real life are simulated. Simulations are performed for two types of materials commonly used to manufacture the headsets, namely silicone and acetal, and for two different orientation angle of the headset on the ear. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and path loss values are then obtained for two different environments, the open space and inside a car. SEMCAD-X software is used as a...
