Experimental Study and Optimization of Calcium Ion Extraction Using Emulsion Liquid Membrane with Isotope Separation Perspective
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Karimi Sabet, Javad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the extraction of calcium ions using an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) with an isotopic perspective. Considering the importance of ion extraction as a preliminary step to isotope separation, the factors affecting the extraction of Ca(II) ions in the ELM process were investigated and optimization of the process was performed in this study. Dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) was used as the carrier due to isotopic considerations. However, its extractability for calcium ions is limited. In order to address this issue, it is possible to introduce an organic acid, specifically di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), into the membrane phase. This...

Abstract
Gelcasting is a novel forming method in fabricating complex three dimensional ceramic parts, and has many parameters and characteristics required to be specified. Up to now, few articles have been published on determination of the idle time of gelation precisely. In this work the chemorheology of gelation in aqueous solution of acrylamide and N, N′ methylenebisacrylamide monomer, and zirconia (PSZ) suspensions of this solution was investigated. As the viscosity of gel system increases abruptly in gelation point, idle time can be determined precisely by measurement of viscosity against time. Idle time can also be determined through temperature measurement against time since the reaction of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, the Oil industry, much progress has been made in terms of increasing the productivity of reservoirs. In this method, generally one or more fluids are injected into wells to help, extract more oil from the reservoir. Knowledge of the main parameters in this flow of two or three phase fluid in the reservoir is most important. If fractured reservoirs are studied, the multiphase flow are much more complex and require more information about that. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of fractured reservoirs and fluid flow within them, little research has been done on them. The studies about two or three phase flow in fractured reservoirs are classified in two groups, modeling and laboratory...

Abstract
The friction on the water–solid interfaces continues to be the most important factor for the energy loss in many marine and submarine applications. Therefore, different techniques have been developed and are available to reduce friction and, as a result, the overall cost. In the past decades, the use of structured surfaces has been given considerable attention because of their specific characteristics such as their abilities in pressure drop reduction. However, an appropriate optimization method is required to find the best surface structure. In the present study, we consider a microgrooved substrate and examine the performance of three shapes including rectangular, elliptical, and...
Fabrication and Optimization of Organic Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells Using Vapor Phase Deposition
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Tajabadi, Fariba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, we focus on study and fabrication of organic inorganic solar cells. We use and optimize various methods such as one-step spin-coating, two-step sequential deposition and vapor-assisted solution process (VASP), to prepare high quality perovskite films. One-step deposition is simplest method for deposition of perovskite films. Although perovskite deposition by this method is very simple, the control of uniformity and surface film morphology is difficult. Chlorine inclusion, optimization of annealing conditions, and a sequential solution-based deposition method have been demonstrated to increase film coverage and uniformity. Hence, we use sequential deposition method for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kazeminezhad, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Al-6wt%Mg alloy has been enormously exploited in aerospace industry. Since for production of this alloy in the form of sheets of different thickness, the cold rolling process is used, thus to understand the final mechanical properties of the rolled alloy products, their work hardening should be examined. Also, one of the important phenomena that occurs in cold state of the alloy is dynamic strain-aging (DSA), which can cause serrations in realistic stress-strain curve. The aforementioned issue is discussed in the current study. Therefore, the work-hardening values for the mentioned alloy during and after rolling is determined, and then compared with the experimental studies. The results of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimipour, Vahid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Quantum entanglement and superposition are wonderful and mysterious phenomena of quantum mechanics. By means of quantum entanglement, two or more systems become partner in state of each other . As a result, measurements on each of these systems affect the status of other systems. Quantum superposition allows a system inhabits several of its possible quantum states simultaneously. These two features are applicable in many technologies in present age. Photons, as an quantum unit of light, are appropriate candidate for utilization these properties. Because they are robust to decoherence and for their preparation exist various methods. Hence, we interested to generation of quantum states of...

Simulation of Fluid Flow on Superhydrophobic Surfaces
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, with rapid developments and advances in science and technology, different ways have been studied to reduce energy consumption in various industries. Reducing the drag force and thus reducing the friction force is one of these methods which has many applications (e. g, in submarine construction industries). Creating some microgrooves in the microchannels is one of the most effective methods in order to reduce the friction force in microchannels that has recently been studied. In this method the air is trapped within the microgrooves and when the fluid (e. g, water) enters the channel passes over the trapped air within these microgrooves instead of touching the channel walls (solid...

Abstract
This investigation is devoted to the influences of non-uniform wall characteristics on the surface adsorption-desorption rates in an electrokinetic microarray. Utilizing already explored electroosmotic and electrophoretic velocities, the species transport equations are solved by a finite-volume-based numerical approach. Uniform, sinusoidal, and pulse-like distributions of the zeta potential are considered in the analysis. The developed model is validated by comparing the results with those of two analytical solutions that are derived for limiting conditions. The results reveal that, in some cases, the surface charge heterogeneity can reduce the saturation time by more than 60%. The efficacy...

A Study on Action Selection Deficits in Schizophrenic Patients Using Computational Modeling in Reniforcement Learning Framework
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vosoughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Bahrami, Fariba (Supervisor)
Abstract
Schizophrenia is a devastating disorder that steals the opportunity of having a normal life from the sufferers. Drugs used in treating this disorder usually target psychotic symptoms and do not affect negative symptoms effectively. One of the deficits falling into this category is the impaired reversal learning. These patients usually learn the rules but do not renounce them after the contingencies of reward have been reversed. To investigate the reasons of this impairment, first a hypothesis of how different parts of the brain communicate during reversal learning is proposed using the physiological evidence. Then considering the known relation between the actor-critic model of the...

Abstract
Friction stir processing (FSP) can be used to improve surface composites. In this study, a modified method of FSP called friction stir vibration processing (FSVP) was applied to develop a surface composite on AZ91 magnesium alloy. In this technique, the workpiece is vibrated normal to the processing direction. The results illustrated that compared with the FSP method, the FSVP caused a better homogeneous distribution of SiC particles in the microstructure. The results also showed that matrix grains of friction stir vibration processed (FSV-processed) samples ((26.43 ± 2.00) µm) were finer than those of friction stir processed (FS-processed) specimens ((39.43 ± 2.00) µm). The results...

Abstract
An improved method of friction stir processing (FSP) was introduced for the processing of AZ91 magnesium alloy specimens. This novel process was called “friction stir vibration processing (FSVP)”. FSP and FSVP were utilized to develop surface composites on the studied alloy while SiC nanoparticles were applied as second-phase particles. The effect of reinforcing SiC particles with different sizes (30 and 300 nm) on different characteristics of the composite surface was studied. The results indicated that the microstructure was refined and mechanical properties such as hardness, ductility, and strength were enhanced as FSVP was applied. Furthermore, it was concluded that the effect of...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Tajabadi, Fariba (Supervisor) ; Mohammadpour, Raheleh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Solar cells, as a part of photovoltaics (PV) industry, have a significant share in the renewable energy market. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and thin film solar cells (TFSCs) achieved 23% and 22% power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) respectively. However, the PV industry still faces challenges like “high manufacturing costs” and “stability”. Among the strategies to overcome these challenges are substitution of the costly materials with cheaper, more abundant ingredients along with utilizing inexpensive deposition methods like printing rather than vacuum-based methods such as evaporation and sputtering. Carbon materials attract more attention in the solar cell research community for their...

Abstract
In this work, a fundamental kinetic model based upon the Hougen-Watson non-porosity formalism was derived and used to simulate dehydrogenation and oxidation axial flow reactors. In addition, partial pressure profiles of components during styrene production process inside porous catalyst were obtained using Dusty-Gas model. The preservation equations are adopted to calculate temperature and flow profiles in the reactors filled with iron-potassium promoted catalyst pellets. The presented mathematical model for ethylbenzene dehydrogenation consists of nonlinear simultaneous differential equations with multiple dependent variables. Simulation results such as selectivity and operating temperature...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the main purposes of this project is to propose an efficient and stable algorithm of a semi-discretized formulation for compositional simulation of oil reservoirs. In this algorithm, all the equations including both mass balances and equilibrium equations are solved simultaneously. The gradient terms are discretized by the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The resulting Differential Algebraic Equation, the so-called DAE, are solved by MATLAB functions. Another novel technique developed, handles each block equations set, separately. In this block-by-block scheme, there are two set of equations; the primary (mass balance) and secondary (equilibrium) equations. In the primary ones, the...
