Simulation and experimental evaluation of initiator and surfactant concentrations and temperature effects on styrene conversion and polymer particle size distribution in batch emulsion polymerization

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 19, Issue 8 , Aug , 2010 , Pages 599-614 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Abedini, H ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Effects of initiator and surfactant concentrations and temperature on styrene conversion and polymer particle size distribution (PSD) in a batch emulsion polymerization are investigated through simulation and experimental studies. The detailed model based on population balance (zero-one model), accounting for nucleation, growth and coagulation phenomena has been used for prediction of particle size distribution. In checking the effect of initiator concentration on final PSD, it was noticed that when critical micelle concentration (CMC) is kept constant, the model cannot predict PSD very well. Thus, a correlation for calculating critical micelle concentration has been proposed and...

Inferential closed-loop control of particle size distribution for styrene emulsion polymerization

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 63, Issue 9 , 2008 , Pages 2378-2390 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Abedini, H ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this work, a new control strategy for controlling the particle size distribution (PSD) in emulsion polymerization has been proposed. It is shown that the desired PSD can be achieved by controlling the free surfactant concentration which in turn can be done by manipulating the surfactant feed rate. Simulation results show that the closed-loop control of free surfactant concentration results in a better control of PSD compared to open-loop control strategy, in presence of model mismatch and disturbances. Since the on-line measuring of ionic free surfactant concentration is difficult, conductivity which is related to it is measured instead and used for control purposes. The closed-loop...

Weight-based colour constancy using contrast stretching

    , Article IET Image Processing ; Volume 15, Issue 11 , 2021 , Pages 2424-2440 ; 17519659 (ISSN) Abedini, Z ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
One of the main issues in colour image processing is changing objects' colour due to colour of illumination source. Colour constancy methods tend to modify overall image colour as if it was captured under natural light illumination. Without colour constancy, the colour would be an unreliable cue to object identity. Till now, many methods in colour constancy domain are presented. They are in two categories; statistical methods and learning-based methods. This paper presents a new statistical weighted algorithm for illuminant estimation. Weights are adjusted to highlight two key factors in the image for illuminant estimation, that is contrast and brightness. The focus was on the convex part of...

Dynamic simulation and open-loop control of particle size distribution of styrene emulsion polymerization

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 15, Issue 11 , 2006 , Pages 901-911 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Abedini, H ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Particle size distribution determines the major end-use properties of latex produced by emulsion. Therefore simulation and control of particle size distribution are important in emulsion polymerization. The investigated system is styrene polymerization. The model for determination of particle size distribution is based on population balance, accounting for nucleation and growth phenomena. The population balance equation (PBE) is discretized respect to particle radius. The ordinary differential equations obtained from discretization of PBE, initiator and monomers mass balances and algebraic thermodynamic equations are solved simultaneously via MATLAB programme. The accuracy of the model has...

Single and multiple illuminant estimation using convex functions

    Abstract
The lighting situation in which a picture was taken has an impact on its color. Illuminant estimation is crucial in computer vision because the colors of objects vary as illumination changes. For this reason, numerous methods for estimating the illuminant have been suggested. In this paper, we suggest a novel statistic-based method for estimating single and multiple illuminants using convex functions. In this respect, convex functions are used in the two subsequent steps of normalization and weight creation. After using weighted K-means to segment the picture, each segment's associated illuminations are determined. The illumination map for the input image is estimated as a final stage. In...

Model predictive control of blood sugar in patients with type-1 diabetes

    Abstract
In this article, two adaptive model predictive controllers (AMPC) are applied to regulate the blood glucose in type 1 diabetic patients. The first controller is constructed based on a linear model, while the second one is designed by using a nonlinear Hammerstein model. The adaptive version of these control schemes is considered to make them more robust against model mismatches and external disturbances. The least squares method with forgetting factor is used to update the model parameters. For simulation study, two well-known mathematical models namely, Puckett and Hovorka which describe the dynamical behavior of patient's body have been selected. The performances and robustness of the...

Solution of population balance equations in emulsion polymerization using method of moments

    , Article Chemical Engineering Communications ; Volume 200, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 20-49 ; 00986445 (ISSN) Vafa, E ; Shahrokhi, M ; Abedini, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work, the method of moments is used for solution of population balance equations appearing in modeling of emulsion polymerization (EP). The zero-one model without coagulation effect and the pseudo-bulk model including coagulation effect are investigated as two common approaches for modeling EP processes. The fixed quadrature method is used to close the set of moment equations, and the maximum entropy approach is applied to reconstruct the particle size distribution from a finite number of its moments. Comparing the results with those obtained by the high-precision finite volume technique indicates that, despite the low computational load of the moment method, it has an acceptable...

    , Article Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Quarterly ; Volume 24, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 415-423 ; 03529568 (ISSN) Yasari, E ; Shahrokhi, M ; Abedini, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper considers the modeling and control of a tubular fixed bed reactor with recycle stream for dimethyl ether (DME) production. For simulation purposes, a pseudo homogeneous model has been developed. By reactor simulation under steady state condition, effects of parameters such as feed rate, pressure and shell temperature are investigated. Using the steady state model, an optimizer that maximizes the reactor yield has been developed. For cooling the reactor, a steam drum that uses heat of reactions to produce steam was coupled with the reactor. Through dynamic simulation, system open loop response was obtained and two control loops were considered for controlling the reactor...

Inferential closed-loop control of particle size and molecular weight distribution in emulsion polymerization of styrene

    , Article Polymer Engineering and Science ; Volume 50, Issue 12 , 2010 , Pages 2306-2320 ; 00323888 (ISSN) Vafa, E ; Shahrokhi, M ; Abedini, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work, simultaneous inferential control of particle size distribution (PSD) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) in a semi-batch emulsion polymerization reactor of styrene has been addressed. Using a comprehensive dynamic model for PSD and MWD predictions and performing a sensitivity analysis, it has been revealed that free surfactant and chain transfer agent (CTA) concentrations in the reactor are the most suitable candidates for inferential control of PSD and MWD, respectively. To control concentrations of these species in the reactor, their inlet feed flow rates are used as manipulated variables. It is assumed that the concentration of CTA is measured infrequently and therefore...

Correlations for prediction of specific surface area and bulk and apparent densities of porous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers

    Abstract
Macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers with different degree of crosslinking were prepared by suspension polymerization in presence of different binary mixtures of toluene and heptane, as diluent. Specific surface area, bulk and apparent densities, and pore volume of the resulting beads were determined experimentally. Applying the least square method to the experimental data, correlations for prediction of these properties were obtained. Effects of divinylbenzene concentration, diluent to comonomer volume ratio, and composition of the diluent mixture were considered in developing the aforementioned correlations. The influence of the reaction recipe on porous structure of the samples...

    2012
    Abstract
In this study, the local composition based models such as the Wilson, the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL), and the Wilson-NRF have been applied in correlation and estimation of density, viscosity, and surface tension of biodiesels. The thermodynamic models have been used in correlating the thermophysical properties for 215 experimental data points. These models have the interaction energy between each pair that is considered as adjustable parameters. To decrease the number of these adjustable parameters, it is assumed that the biodiesels are composed of two hypothetical components. The average absolute deviation (AADs) of the correlated density of biodiesels for the Wilson, the NRTL, and the...

    Abstract
In this research, direct conversion of wet algal biomass into biodiesel using supercritical methanol was studied. In this process, microalgal lipids simultaneously was extracted and converted to biodiesel under high pressure and temperature conditions without using any catalyst. Several experiments have been performed to optimize the methanol amount and it has been revealed that the best performance was achieved by using methanol/wet biomass ratio of 8:1. The effect of using various co-solvents in increasing the efficiency of the supercritical process was investigated. It has been shown that hexane was the most effective co-solvent and its optimal ratio respect to wet biomass was 6:1. The...

Experimental study and thermodynamic modeling for purification of extracted algal lipids using an organic/aqueous two-phase system

    Abstract
The extraction and purification of lipids from the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris have been investigated. First, a mixture of hexane and ethanol was used to extract lipids from the algal biomass. Ultrasonication was employed to disrupt the cell wall and increase the extraction performance. Under these conditions, over 90% of the fatty acids in the biomass were extracted. Second, a biphasic system was formed by adding water and hexane to the extracted crude oil. In this way, fatty acids were mainly distributed in the organic phase (mostly hexane and ethanol) while most of the contaminants remained in the aqueous phase (mostly water and ethanol). Equilibrium distribution data between the phases...

    Abstract
A better performance and consequently the widespread use of polymeric insulators in different parts of the power grid can increase their role in the grid reliability. The accumulation of contamination and housing-erosion are the two most effective factors in undermining the performance of this type of insulators. Therefore, electric utilities need to identify contaminated insulators for washing and cracks in polymeric housing to replace them with healthy specimens. This paper discusses the impact of contamination layer and housing-erosion of polymeric insulators on the partial discharges (PD) at the insulator surface, through RF-PRPD (phase resolved partial discharge) patterns. The existence...

    Abstract
For large and complex reacting systems, computational efficiency becomes a critical issue in process simulation, optimization and model-based control. Mechanism simplification is often a necessity to improve computational speed. We present a novel approach to simplification of reaction networks that formulates the model reduction problem as an optimization problem and solves it using genetic algorithm (GA).The aim of simplification kinetics modeling is to derive the simplest reaction system, which retains the essential features of the full system. Numerical results for H2/O2 combustion reaction mechanism illustrate the potential and proficiency of this approach

Heterogeneity of trade patterns in high-tech goods across established and emerging exporters: A panel data analysis

    Abstract
This study aims to identify underlying fundamental factors behind high-tech exports by the established and emerging countries, separately. The author also examines whether the two export patterns converge over time. Based on the gravity approach, a generalized method of moments panel estimator is applied to rigorously address the endogeneity problem in both static and dynamic versions of the model. In addition, the nonstationary and cointegrating features of variables are discussed. The author finds that high-tech exports from the emerging countries are mainly based on foreign direct investment inflows and participation in the international production chain, as well as a high degree of...

    Abstract
In this paper, we have proposed a quasi-static model of a multi-agent system as police agents with and without non-holonomic constraints for agents' motion. We also consider an active thief agent which has stochastic dynamic equation of motion. Our control purpose is that these police agents pursue the thief agent and the geometrical center of them aims the thief agent current position. Also in the motion of the police agents for surrounding the thief, the unity of the swarm should be preserved and collision between them should be avoided. Police agents do not have all of the dynamic states of the thief agent's motion andalso those that are available and observable for the police agents are...

    Abstract
This study investigated the effect of intercritical heat treatment temperature on the tensile properties, work hardening and corrosion resistance of dual phase steel. Ferrite-martensite dual phase steel with different martensite volume fractions were obtained after heat treatment at different intercritical temperatures. Microstructure, mechanical properties of steel were measured and the corrosion resistance was evaluated via polarization test. Tensile strength of the specimens increased by increasing the martensite volume fraction up to 48.2%. Further increase in martensite volume fraction led to decrease in tensile strength. Work hardening behavior analyzing showed that in DP steel with...

Identification of 4D Lü hyper-chaotic system using identical systems synchronization and fractional adaptation law

    Abstract
In this paper, the parameters of a 4D Lü hyper-chaotic system are identified via synchronization of two identical systems. Unknown parameters of the drive system are identified by an adaptive method. Stability of the closed-loop system with one state feedback controller is studied by using the Lyapunov theorem. Also the convergence of the parameters to their true values is proved. Then a fractional adaptation law is applied to reduce the time of parameter convergence. Finally the results of both integer and fractional methods are compared
