On-Line Energy Management for Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aflaki Khorasgani, Mehdi (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Providing low-power fault tolerance is usually an important requirement in real-time embedded systems. A faulty result in safety-critical systems and a failure to meet a deadline in hard real-time systems can cause catastrophic consequences for the system or environment. Therefore, these systems must be highly reliable and meet real-time constraints. Slack time in time redundancy techniques (e.g. roll-back recovery) can be used to increase system reliability and to save energy. Time redundancy techniques are suitable from an energy consumption point of view but may not be sufficiently reliable for tight real-time constraints. In the condition of tight timing constraints, the hardware...

Proposals for modification of Iranian bitumen to meet the climatic requirements of Iran

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 23, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 2141-2150 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Aflaki, S ; Tabatabaee, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this research, bitumen from seven Iranian bitumen production plants were tested and characterized according to the Superpave performance grading (PG) system. The study compared the results of this classification with the 13 performance grade binders required for specific climatic zones in Iran. A set of modifiers, as well as laboratory air blowing, were used to generate the required PG binders. The modifiers used were crumb rubber, gilsonite, polyphosphoric acid, and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). It was found that the variety of available binders is not adequate to fully cover the required PGs. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Harmonious Coloring of Graph

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aflaki, Arian (Author) ; Jafari, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Let G be a simple graph. A harmonious coloring of G is a proper vertex coloring such that each pair of colors appears together on at most one edge. The harmonious chromatic number, h(G), is the least number of colors in such a coloring. In this project, first we discuss about complexity of harmonious coloring. Then we find some bounds for harmonious chromatic number

An Investigative Study on Iranian Bitumens Compatibility with SHRP Performance Grading System, and Production of the Needed Grades

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Aflaki, Sasan (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This investigative study intends to identify and characterize bitumen from seven Iranian bitumen production plants according to the Superpave Performance Grading (PG) system, conventional classic tests, and chemical separation tests. The study then compares the identified performance grades with the thirteen performance-grade binders required for specific climatic zones in Iran. It is observed that the variety of available binders is not adequate to fully cover the required PGs. Blending was initially considered as a suitable and economic method for production of the missing performance grades. However due to similar rheological properties of bitumen samples, resulting in nearly identical...

Parametric Study and Numerical Simulation of Spiral Wound Heat Exchanger Performance at Cryogenic Temperatures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinian Khorasgani, Mohsen (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cryogenic is the study of physical phenomena at temperatures below 123 Kelvin. One of the applications of cryogenic science is the liquefaction of gases. In the liquefaction cycles of gases, such as helium liquefaction, fluidization occurs in the pressure reducing valve but temperature of the gas should be greatly reduced before it enters the pressure reducing valve. For this purpose, high-performance heat exchangers should be used. Spiral Wound is one of the heat exchangers that has ability to achieve over 90% efficiency due to its structure. Researchs in the field of design and simulation of spiral heat exchangers are limited and are done with a lot of simple assumptions such as constant...

Analysis of Firm-level Factors Fffects in Success of Financing with Credit Guarantee-Case Study of Iranian Technology Fund

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fatemi Khorasgani, Ali (Author) ; Souzanchi Kashani, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Financing is an important barrier in growth path of small and medium-sized technology-based firms. Using guarantee letters to ease access of such firms to credit, is one way to encounter this barrier. In this study, the pioneer research and technology fund in offering this service to technology-based firms in Iran have been considered. Credit guarantee issuance records of this fund illustrates that none of credit guarantee letters certified by this fund has been defaulted yet. Comparison of fund’s credit scoring model with Chandler’s framework for organizational capabilities reveals that the fund does not investigate marketing and managerial capabilities in its credit scoring model. So, the...

    , Article 2014 11th International ISC Conference on Information Security and Cryptology, ISCISC 2014 ; Sept , 2014 , pp. 173-179 ; ISBN: 9781479953837 Khorasgani, H. A ; Asaad, S ; Eghlidos, T ; Aref, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a method of threshold secret sharing scheme in which secret reconstruction is based on celebrated Babai lattice algorithm. In order to supply secure public channels for transmitting shares to parties, we need to ensure that there is no quantum threats to these channels. One solution for this problem can be utilization of lattice cryptosystems for these channels which requires designing lattice based secret sharing schemes. We indicate that our scheme is asymptotically correct. Moreover, we analyze the security of our scheme by giving a quantitative proof of security from the view point of information theory

A Lattice based Secret Sharing Scheme with Changeable Threshold

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini Khorasgani, Hamidreza (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Eghlidos, Taraneh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The need to protect the key in cryptosystems has been a motivation of studying secret sharing schemes. A secret sharing scheme is a method for sharing a secret data (key) by distributing some values, called shares, to a number of participants in such a way that only some authorized subset of them can recover the secret. In a threshold secret sharing scheme, authorized subsets are those whose size are at least a given value called threshold of the scheme. Increasing the attacker capabilities in achieving the participants’ shares, requires an increase in the threshold parameter. In a changeable threshold secret sharing scheme, participants ate able to compute new shares from their old shares...

Experimental Study and Optimization of Nuclear Grade Boric Acid Production Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian Koudakan, Payam (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Aflaki Pashaki, Fereydoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Boric acid (H3BO3) is a weak monobasic acid that exist as a white powder in the standard conditions. In industry, it is used in manufacturing of fiberglas filaments, precious metals soldering and production of flat panel LCD displays. In all of these applications, normal grade boric acid is used, but nuclear industry demands an ultrapure boric acid (UPA) for controlling of the reactivity and power levels in pressurized water reactors. Annual consumption of UPA in Bushehr Power Plant (BPP) is around 60 metric tons. Currently, this amount is imported from Russia, but atomic energy organization of Iran plans to displace it by the acid made inside the country. Domestic production of UPA in...

Design and Fabrication of Inductive High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hekmati, Arsalan (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The continuous rise in electricity demand and the ever growing power generation in different power networks over the world have caused the short circuit level in the power systems to exceed the operational rating of the installed power devices (including cables, circuit breakers and buses). Replacing these devices with new higher rating devices is an expensive solution. From this point of view, utilizing fault current limiters is an economical solution. Superconducting fault current limiters form an efficient category of current limiters. This type is expected to be studied and used widely in future due to their advantages. In this thesis, the first chapter reviews the superconductivity...

Enhancement of THz Radiation from Josephson Junctions in Superconductors Using Electromagnetic Resonators

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iranmehr, Masoud (Author) ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Terahertz waves which includes frequencies between 100 GHz to 10 THz of electromagnetic spectrum have found many applications in science, medical treatments and industry. One of the recent methods to produce these waves is using nonlinear properties of superconductors based on Josephson junctions which inherently appear in some superconductors called BSCCO. Stack of intrinsic junctions of these superconducting materials can radiate terahertz waves by only applying a DC voltage across them. This Thesis investigates some of these structures based on Josephson junctions to produce coherent radiation of terahertz waves. For the optimization of the radiation power, this study also investigates...

On the Spectrum of Modified Theories of Gravity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seraj, Ali (Author) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Sheikh Jabbari, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are different approaches in modifications of General Relativity as the theory of gravity. The modified theories of gravity are important cases in this context, which mostly start by modifying the Einstein-Hilbert action, while keeping the general covariance. Within the modified theories of gravity, we consider two cases. The first is the f(R) theories of gravity, and the second is curvature squared theories of gravity with an action like S = ∫d4x pg( 116GR + (R)2 + R2 +(R)2). Curvature squared theories of gravity have interesting feautures, most important of which is renormalizability, in contrast with General Relativity. But this advantage, as noted by K.S. Stelle in 1977 comes at...

On Thermodynamics and Phase Space of Near Horizon Extremal Geometries

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hajian, Kamal (Author) ; Sheikh-Jabbari, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG), are geometries which may appear in the near horizon region of the extremal black holes. These geometries have SL(2;R)U(1)n isometry, and constitute a family of solutions to the theory under consideration. In the first part of this report, their thermodynamic properties are reviewed, and their three universal laws are derived. In addition, at the end of the first part, the role of these laws in black hole thermodynamics is presented. In the second part of this thesis, we review building their classical phase space in the Einstein-Hilbert theory. The elements in the NHEG phase space manifold are built by appropriately chosen coordinate transformations of...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Moradnouri, Ahmad (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Co-Supervisor) ; Hekmati, Arsalan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Employing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes, instead of copper or aluminum wires for winding in a superconducting transformer, results in a series of significant advantages; such as: smaller volume, lighter weight, higher efficieny, greatly extended overload capability, better voltage regulation, lower life cycle cost, fault current limiting capability, lower environmental pollution and lower risk potential against fire hazards. In this thesis, optimal design of flux diverter using genetic algorithm for axial short circuit force reduction in HTS transformers has been performed. Then, multilayered flux diverters have been proposed for reduction of weight and losses. The impact of...

A Multi-Objective Robust Optimization Model for Logistics Planning in the Earthquake Response Phase [electronic resource]

, Article Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review, Elsevier ; Volume 49, Issue 1, January 2013, , Pages 217–249 Najafi, M. (Mehdi) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Dullaert, Wout ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Usually, resources are short in supply when earthquakes occur. In such emergency situations, disaster relief organizations must use these scarce resources efficiently to achieve the best possible emergency relief. This paper therefore proposes a multi-objective, multi-mode, multi-commodity, and multi-period stochastic model to manage the logistics of both commodities and injured people in the earthquake response. Also, a robust approach is developed and used to make sure that the distribution plan performs well under the various situations that can follow an earthquake. Afterwards, it proposes a solution methodology according to hierarchical objective functions and uses it to illustrate the...

Monitoring of Valve Leakage in Internal Combustion Engine Using Acoustic Emission Method

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Mohammad (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Mehdigholi, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mehdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Valve leak detection is very important due to bad direct effects on parts life and engine power. Acoustic emission (AE) has a good known ability on leak detection between fault detection methods. The aim of this thesis is presenting the ability of AE method for valve leak detection in internal combustion engines. The research method in a general framework based on the idea that firstly some evaluations were done in static tests for leakage due to three faults including clearance, quasi-crack and notch. Then, the evaluations were continued with dynamic analysis of rotational speeds and different loads on the engine. Finally, the neural network approach was used to automatically detect all...

Evaluation of Electromagnetic Forces on three-phase Core-Type Power Transformer Windings during Inrush Current by FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eslami, Ali (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inrush Current is a form of over-current that occurs during energization of a transformer. For power transformers, the magnitude of the first peak of inrush current is initially several times the rated load current but slowly decreases until it finally reaches the normal exciting current value. This process typically takes several minutes. Time-variant axial and radial electromagnetic forces under inrush current and short-circuit current are calculated (by finite element method; FEM), and compared. An analytic method is presented for computation of inrush current in transformer. The simulation results obtained by this proposed method are compared with the measured values. A compact...

Relative Merits of the Two Famous Formulations of Bohmian Mechanics

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Atiq, Mahdi (Author) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the two existing formulations of Bohmian mechanics. The first one was proposed by Bohm, and emphasizes on the dynamics being second-order, and in which, the key tool for explaining the quantum phenomena is a non-classical potential, called "the quantum potential". In this approach, the postulates of de Broglie's "pilot-wave" theory, which now is known as Bohmian mechanics, are non-fundamental and are special to the atomic level. The possibility is proposed that these postulates become subjected to some modifications at the nuclear or lower levels, but no particular way for performing such modifications is suggested. The...
