The Calculation of Margin Requirements For Gold Futures Contracts By Using Conditional Extreme Value Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Samira Mameghani (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Futures exchanges require a margin requirement that ensures their competitiveness and protects against default risk. The purpose of a margin requirement is to protect a clearinghouse from members’ defaults resulting from big losses due to adverse movement of futures prices. Extreme movements are central to the margin setting problem, because only a large price variation may cause brokers to incur losses. So in this study according to recent default in gold futures in Iran Mercantile Exchange we apply extreme value theory for computing unconditional and conditional optimal margin levels based on Block-Maxima and Peak over threshold approaches. The results show that at very high confidence...

Laboratory Study of Transverse Dispersion and Hydrodynamic of Continuous Flow Around Cylindrical Cylinders

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltani, Samira Sadat (Author) ; Jamali, Mirmosadegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, by performing a series of experiments, the effect of the presence of cylinders on the formation of vortices and the interaction of cylinders on each other and, finally, transverse propagation in a steady flow are investigated. The cylinder cylinders that are in the direction of the motion of the water, have a significant effect on the hydrodynamic aspects and propagation in these streams. In the pattern of flow around cylindrical cylinders, with increasing Reynolds number, the vortex behind the stem begins to oscillate and when they reach, vortices flow into the stream. The flow velocity field, the formation and vortex fluctuation, affects the process of particle propagation...

A localization algorithm for large scale mobile wireless sensor networks: A learning approach

    , Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Vol. 69, issue. 1 , July , 2014 , p. 98-120 Afzal, S ; Beigy, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Localization is a crucial problem in wireless sensor networks and most of the localization algorithms given in the literature are non-adaptive and designed for fixed sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a learning based localization algorithm for mobile wireless sensor networks. By this technique, mobility in the network will be discovered by two crucial methods in the beacons: position and distance checks methods. These two methods help to have accurate localization and constrain communication just when it is necessary. The proposed method localizes the nodes based on connectivity information (hop count), which doesn't need extra hardware and is cost efficient. The experimental...

Accurate and Low-Cost Location Estimation using Machine Learning Techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afzal, Samira (Author) ; Beigy, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless sensor networks have a wide range of applications in the world. In most of the applications, collected data is not usable without the knowledge about the localization of events. There are two approaches to specifying the location of a sensor: using hardware solutions such as GPS, which is an expensive solution, and using the localization algorithm. Therefore, localization has an important role in sensor networks. Most of the current localization algorithms are non-adaptive and proposed for fixed wireless sensor networks. Recently, adaptive localization algorithms have been considered because of their simple implementation, fast result and low computation overhead for each node. In...

An Investigation on the Effects of Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading on Deep Foundations Using Finite Difference Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afzal Soltani, Sina (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Liquefaction is an important phenomenon in geotechnical engineering which can cause severe damages to structures. Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading is defined as the lateral displacement in mild slopes or level grounds ending in free faces (such as quay walls) triggered by liquefaction in subsurface soil layers. During recent years, extensive studies have been conducted around the world documenting liquefaction induced lateral spreading and its effects on deep foundations. In the present study, a series of shaking table experiments which were previously conducted at Sharif University of Technology are numerically simulated using the three dimensional finite difference based program,...

Designing a Low Power Transmitter for Medical Implant Communications Service

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afzal, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Safarian, Aminghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important parameters of an implanted device in the human body is its ability to operate for a long time to decrease the need for surgery in order to replace the battery. Therefore, the radio transceivers in these devices are designed in such a way to reduce the power consumption as much as possible. But, at the same time, it is crucial that the bit error rate be as small as possible to decrease the number of incorrect sent and received bits. Thus, the phase noise should also be as small as possible in order to reduce the bit error rate. In this thesis, a transmitter has been designed for Medical Implant Communications Service standard. In order to reduce the power...

    , Article Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry ; Volume 16, Issue 6 , November , 2010 , Pages 978-985 ; 1226086X (ISSN) Afzal, S ; Rahimi, A ; Ehsani, M. R ; Tavakoli, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In the current study, hydrogen fluoride (HF) adsorption onto the sodium fluoride pellets is modeled. For this purpose a two-dimensional, non-isothermal model was developed and the governing equations were solved numerically. The contributions of diffusion transport in axial and radial directions also were considered in mathematical formulations. The model results of effluent concentration and breakthrough curves of HF were compared with the experimental data obtained in a lab-scale adsorption unit, reported in our previous work [1]. The results indicate while the feed gas velocity decreases, the HF adsorption capacity on NaF is significantly enhanced and there is a delay in breakthrough...

    Abstract
In uranium conversion industry, the fluorine is used as chemical raw material gas to produce UF4 and UF6 while its purity is very important. In this study, the adsorption process of hydrogen fluoride, as an impurity in the process of fluorine production, on sodium fluoride pellets is experimentally studied in a lab-scale fixed bed adsorbent. Also, the effects of some operating parameters including inlet concentration and inlet temperature of hydrogen fluoride are precisely investigated on the adsorption process. The data of adsorption are analyzed and correlated by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The adsorption capacity is found to be 1.908 and 0.750 g HF/g NaF by the Langmuir...

    Abstract
The effects of liquefaction induced lateral spreading on the piles of a dolphin-type berth were investigated using 1 g large scale shake table testing accompanied by numerical simulations. For this purpose, various aspects of the response of the soil and the pile group to lateral spreading were considered. The results indicated that large bending moments were induced in the piles during lateral spreading and the downslope piles of the group received greater bending moments than the upslope one. The monotonic components of bending moments in the piles were reasonably predicted by the displacement based numerical approach using p-y springs when they were properly tuned for strength reduction...

    Abstract
Background: Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods: For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific,...

    Abstract
IMPORTANCE The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) provided systematic estimates of incidence, morbidity, and mortality to inform local and international efforts toward reducing cancer burden. OBJECTIVE To estimate cancer burden and trends globally for 204 countries and territories and by Sociodemographic Index (SDI) quintiles from 2010 to 2019. EVIDENCE REVIEW The GBD 2019 estimation methods were used to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2019 and over the past decade. Estimates are also provided by quintiles of the SDI, a composite measure of educational...
