Hubert Dreyfus on the Impossibility of Artificial Intelligence: Consequences and Implications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghili Dehkordi, Bamdad (Author) ; Sefidkhosh, Maysam (Supervisor) ; Taqavi, Mostafa ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Hubert Dreyfus other than being a prominent philosopher is amongst early critics of classical artificial intelligence project which was initialized during 1955-1960. Challenging the rationalist presuppositions of this paradigm, he foresaw various situations where mechanical artificial intelligence based upon modeling the world through symbolic representation and mimicking reason by formalized rules would fail to deliver even remotely similar outputs in digital computers as in human though process and problem solving ability.Twenty years later it became obvious for AI researchers that obstacles like frame problem or lack of common sense would follow their projects no matter what computing...

Scaling inertia properties of a manipulator payload for 0-g emulation of spacecraft

    , Article International Journal of Robotics Research ; Volume 28, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 883-894 ; 02783649 (ISSN) Aghili, F ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents a method to control a manipulator system grasping a rigid-body payload so that the motion of the combined system as a consequence of external applied forces is the same as any other free-floating rigid-body (with different inertial properties). This allows 0-g emulation of a scaled spacecraft prototype under the test in a 1-g laboratory environment. The controller consisting of motion feedback and force/moment feedback adjusts the motion of the test spacecraft so as to match that of the flight spacecraft, even if the latter has flexible appendages (such as solar panels) and the former is rigid. The stability of the overall system is analytically investigated, and the...

Design of Novel Drugs Based on Tyrosine and Phenylalanine Amino Acids to Inhibit Cyclin-Dependent Kinases 2 (CDK2) Proteins Modeled on Flavopiridol Drug

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghili, Farshad (Author) ; Fattahi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cyclin-dependent kinases 2 (CDK2) are one of the important proteins in cell cycle regulation and progression. In many human cancer cells, the activity of CDK2 kinases and their related subunits are deregulated, leading to tumor formation. Therefore, inhibition of this enzyme as an attractive therapeutic target can cause cancer cell death in glioblastoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Using new pharmaceutical structures based on sugar and amino acids is a new approach due to its greater efficacy and fewer side effects than old drugs. In this research, according to the structure of Flavopiridol as one of the CDK2 inhibitors, the active site of CDK2, and the structure of ATP molecule, 50...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghili, Amir (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increased height of high-rise structures has made the effects of reduced stability a crucial factor in structural analysis and design. There are a variety of methods for analyzing the stability of high-rise structures. This thesis discusses nonlinear finite element method for analyzing the stability of a three-dimensional 50-storey concrete structure with a height of 150 meter using increment dynamic analysis (IDA). The IDA was first proposed by Bertero.v and it has been adopted in a variety of manners by researchers. In recent years, this method has been confirmed by EEMA. Moreover, FEMA350, FEMA351 and FEMA P695 guidelines have paid special attention to this method for determining...

Attitude control of satellites with delay in attitude measurement

    , Article 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, ICRA 2013 ; 2013 , Pages 947-952 ; 10504729 (ISSN); 9781467356411 (ISBN) Bahrami, S ; Namvar, M ; Aghili, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Time delay in attitude sensors is one of the performance limiting factors in controlling the satellite attitude. In this paper, we investigate attitude control of a fully actuated satellite in presence of constant and known delay in attitude measurement. The proposed controller consists of a matrix gain which is computed by solving a time varying matrix differential equation depending on the time delay. We assume that the moment-of-inertia matrix of the satellite is unknown. The controller guarantees asymptotic convergence of the satellite attitude and angular velocity to their desired values in presence of delay. Finally, a simulation example is presented that illustrates performance of the...

Distributed Publisher-Subscriber Pattern for Content-Based Routing in Software Defined Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghili, Shahrooz (Author) ; Hemmat Yar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Content-based routing, as provided by publisher/subscriber systems, has evolved as a key paradigm for interactions between loosely coupled application components (content publishers and subscribers). Content-based routing aims to increase the efficiency of forwarding by utilizing the diversity of information exchanged between application components. Using content-based forwarding rules (also called content filters) installed on content-based routers (also termed brokers), bandwidth-efficiency is increased by only forwarding content to the subset of subscribers who are actually interested in the published content. Many middle-ware implementations for content-based publish/subscribe have been...

    Abstract
Demand forecasting plays an important role as a decision support tool in power system management, especially in smart grid and liberalized power market. In this paper, a demand forecasting method is presented by using support vector regression (SVR). The proposed method is applied to practical hourly data of the Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company. The SVR parameters are selected by using a grid optimization process and an investigation on different kernel functions. Moreover, correlation analysis is used to find exogenous variables. Acceptable accuracy of load prediction is shown by comparing the result of SVR model to that of the artificial neural networks and the actual data,...

    , Article AIChE Journal ; Volume 52, Issue 2 , 2006 , Pages 692-704 ; 00011541 (ISSN) Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The isomerization of D-glucose to D-fructose using the immobilized glucose isomerase, as a typical model system of solid-liquid enzyme reactions has been carried out in a novel type of two-impinging-jets reactor (TIJR), which is characterized by a rotating inner cylinder in a stationary one. Because of the impinging process, turbulence, and complex trajectory of the solid particles within the reactor, the fractional conversion of glucose obtained in the TIJR increased dramatically compared to that obtained by conventional reaction systems. A compartment model was considered to describe the pattern of flow [residence time distribution (RTD) of solid particles] within the TIJR. Considering...

    Abstract
A compartment model was developed to describe the flow pattern of gas within the dense zone of a membrane-assisted fluidized-bed reactor (MAFBR), in the bubbling mode of operation for steam reforming of methane both with (adiabatic) and without (isothermal) entering oxygen. Considering such a flow pattern and using the experimental data reported elsewhere [Roy S, Pruden BB, Adris AM, Grace JR, Lim CJ. Fluidized-bed steam methane reforming with oxygen input. Chem Eng Sci 1999; 54:2095-2102.], the parameters of the developed model (i.e., number of compartments for the bubble and emulsion phases) were determined and fair agreements were obtained between model predictions and experimental data....

    2013
    Abstract
In this article, adsorption of p-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene on Na-BETA type zeolite in liquid phase at 15, 25, and 35 °C has been studied and the single adsorption isotherms have been obtained and reported. The Langmuir isotherm model was used to describe the experimental adsorption isotherm data. It was found that p-xylene is more strongly adsorbed component followed by ethylbenzene, m-xylene and o-xylene. This means that this adsorbent is selective for p-xylene. Using Langmuir isotherm model, the saturation adsorption capacities of the adsorbent were obtained as follows 143 mg/g for p-xylene, 105 mg/g for ethylbenzene, 83 mg/g for m-xylene, and 68 mg/g for o-xylene at 25...

    Abstract
The mass-transfer characteristics of a new type of two-impinging-streams reactor (TISR) was studied by means of sodium sulfite solution as the liquid phase and air as the gas phase, in the presence and absence of various types of surface-active agents (SAAs). The influences of anionic, cationic, and nonionic SAAs on the specific interfacial area and overall volumetric mass-transfer coefficient obtained in the TISR were investigated. It was found that the presence of a little amount of the above-mentioned contaminants increases the specific interfacial area and decreases the overall volumetric mass-transfer coefficient. On the basis of the experimental results obtained for various types of...
