Abstract
Pore facies analysis plays an important role in the classification of reservoir rocks and reservoir simulation studies. The current study proposes a two-step approach for pore facies characterization in the carbonate reservoirs with an example from the Kangan and Dalan formations in the South Pars gas field. In the first step, pore facieswere determined based on Mercury Injection Capillary Pressure (MICP) data in corporation with the Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA) method. Each pore facies represents a specific type of pore geometry indicating the interaction between the primary rock fabric and its diagenetic overprints. In the next step, polynomial meta-models were established based...
Effect of Mold Hardness on Microstructure and Contraction Porosity in Ductile Cast Iron
, Article Journal of Iron and Steel Research International ; Volume 18, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 44-47+67 ; 1006706X (ISSN) ; Amin Ahmadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
The effect of mold hardness on the microstructure of ductile iron and the contraction porosity was investigated. Molds with different hardnesses (0.41, 0.48, 0.55, 0.62 MPa) and a sand mold prepared by Co2 method were used. The influence of silicon content on the induced expansion pressure owing to the formation of graphite was also investigated. The contraction during solidification can be compensated by an induced expansion owing to the graphite relief when the hardness of mold increases; therefore, the possibility of achieving a sound product without using any riser increases

Abstract
Stay and guide vanes (distributor) are essential parts of a turbine. They are used to control the flow rate and to appropriately transfer the flow momentum to the runner. In this work, flow through the distributor is analyzed. For various Boundary Conditions (BC) and different configurations, threedimensional flows in the distributor of a Francis turbine are evaluated and compared with each other. The numerical simulations were carried out using Fluent software and the results were validated with a GAMM Francis turbine, where the geometry and detailed best efficiency measurements were publically available. In these simulations, the flow was assumed to be steady and the effect of turbulence...
Experimental and numerical approach to enlargement of performance of primary settling tanks
, Article Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 1-12 ; 17353572 (ISSN) ; Firoozabadi, B ; Ahmadi, G ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Circulation regions always exist in settling tanks. These regions would result in short-circuiting enlargement of the dead zone and high flow mixing problems and avoid optimal particle sedimentation. Therefore, the main objective of the tank design process is to avoid formation of the circulation zone, which is known as dead zone. Experiments show that the tank performance can be improved by altering the geometry of the tank which leads to a different velocity distributions and flow patterns. In this paper, the presence of a baffle and its effect on the hydrodynamics of the flow field has been investigated in a primary settling tank. Hydrodynamics of the flow field in these basins is...

Abstract
In the present research work the binary NiTi alloys with various compositions in the range of 50.3-51 at.% Ni were used. Samples have been annealed at 850 °C for 15 min and then quenched in water. In order to characterize transformation temperatures and enthalpy changes of the forward and the reverse martensitic transformation, Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) experiments were performed. The enthalpy and entropy changes as a function of Ni atomic content have been thermodynamically investigated. Results show that enthalpy and entropy changes of martensitic transformation decrease when Ni atomic content increases. The variation of enthalpy and entropy of martensitic transformation...

Abstract
In this paper, two very simple and accurate equations are introduced that enable geotechnical engineers to determine the undrained ultimate bearing capacity of shallow strip foundations resting on two-layered clays. Results of the analyses show that in the case of weak-overstrong clay, usually general shear failure occurs, and in the case of strong-over-weak clay, the soil will most likely experience punching failure with a large amount of plastic settlement before it reaches its ultimate bearing capacity. This study applied the finite-difference method using a computer program to evaluate the undrained bearing capacity for all cases analyzed. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was used for...

Abstract
Some fundamental and unique characteristics of space are (1) global perspective, (2) above the atmosphere, (3) gravity-free environment, (4) abundant resources, and (5) exploration of space itself. If the mission doesn't rely on some fundamental and unique characteristics of space, it will likely cost more to do in space than in air or on Earth [1]. On the other hand, design of complex systems like satellites involves selecting design parameters (DPs) to satisfy the required constraints while meeting desired performance objectives. These parameters are often coupled, and their relationships not easily understood, and it makes the design an iterative process with high complexity [2]. But in...

Abstract
Various parameters affect thermal conductivity of nanofluid; however, some of them are more influential such as temperature, size and type of nano particles and volumetric concentration. In this study, artificial neural network as well as least square support vector machine (LSSVM) are applied in order to predict thermal conductivity ratio of alumina/water nanofluid as a function of particle size, temperature and volumetric concentration. LSSVM, Self-Organizing Map and Levenberg-Marquardt Back Propagation algorithms are applied to predict thermal conductivity ratio. Obtained results indicated that these algorithms are appropriate tool for thermal conductivity ratio prediction. The...

Abstract
Due to unique properties of NiTi shape memory alloys such as high corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, super elasticity and shape memory behavior, NiTi shape memory alloys are suitable materials for medical applications. Although TiO2 passive layer in these alloys can prevent releasing of nickel to the environment, high nickel content and stability of passive layer in these alloys are very debatable subjects. In this study a NiTi shape memory alloy with nominal composition of 50.7 atom% Ni was investigated by corrosion tests. Electrochemical tests were performed in two physiological environments of Ringer solution and NaCl 0.9% solution. Results indicate that the breakdown potential of...

Abstract
In this paper, reducing the Strouhal number of a circular cylinder is studied numerically. Two-dimensional numerical simulations of flow over a normal circular cylinder and various modified circular cylinders are carried out using FLUENT® soft ware. Two small blades are attached to a circular cylinder and the effects of variation of the blades length and the blade angle are studied numerically. The blade angle is chosen 2α=0°, 30°, 90°, 120° and 150°. The blades length is chosen l/d=0.125, 0.25, 0.375. Effects of blade angles and blade lengths were studied for both 2α=0° and 150°. Results show that increasing in blade lengths decreases the Strouhal number. Moreover, as the blade angle was...

Abstract
In this work, the rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. In addition to general studies of microgravity effects, the initiation of hydrodynamic convection, solely due to the variations of interface curvature (surface tension force) and thus the generation of shearing forces at the interfaces, was also studied. Then, the variation of surface tension due to the temperature gradient (Marangoni convection), which can initiate the onset of convection even in the absence of buoyancy, was studied. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The...

Abstract
Using solid-state power amplifiers for next generation of weather radars becomes feasible by pulse compression techniques. In this study a 1.5 kW solid-state power amplifier (transmitter) for C-band weather radars is designed and fabricated by GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) technology. An experimental setup based on heterodyne receiver with 16-bit digitiser is developed to investigate the behavior of the power amplifier under different cooling methods and back-off points. Several measurements with shaped LFM pulse show an approximately identical pulse to pulse (P2P) stability for 3 dB compression, P1dB and 2 dB back-off points while the best sidelobe level (SLL) is achieved for...

Abstract
The present study is concerned with the numerical simulation of free-surface waves and wave induced separation in the presence of an intrusion. The results of several simulations are reported. The first study was performed for a NACA0024 surface piercing hydrofoil over a range of several Froude numbers (0.19, 0.37, 0.55), along with wave breaking at Fr = 1.0 The NACA0024 foil was of particular interest, as it almost has no separation at large depths; thus the effect of the free-surface wave and the wave induced separation could be studied. Free- surface waves and wave induced separation results were evaluated and compared with both the available experimental data and the previous numerical...

Abstract
The effects of SiO 2 and K 2O were investigated on the glass forming ability (GFA) and structural characteristics of CaOTiO 2P 2O 5 system. Differential thermal analyzer (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR and 31P magic angle spinning NMR methods were applied for characterizations of the system. Unwanted crystallization in the initial three components base glass composition was observed by adding SiO 2 and crystalline phases such as TiP 2O 7, rutile (TiO 2) and cristobalite (SiO 2) were formed in it. The results showed that K 2O prevents crystallization of glasses and promotes the formation of glass. FT-IR and X-ray diffraction showed that the addition...
