Abstract
A novel pool-based market-clearing algorithm for spinning reserve (SR) procurement and the cost allocation associated with provision of spinning reserve among customers (DisCos) is developed in this paper. Rational buyer market model is used to clear energy and spinning reserve markets in the proposed algorithm. This market model gives DisCos the opportunity to declare their own energy requirement together with their desired reliability levels to the ISO and also they can participate in the SR market as a interruptible load. The DisCos' desired reliability levels are selected from a hybrid deterministic/probabilistic framework designated as the system well-being model. Using the demand of...

Abstract
Large-scale simulation of spiking neural networks on hardware with a remarkable resemblance to their mathematical models is a key objective of the neuromorphic discipline. This issue is, however, considerably resource-intensive due to the presence of nonlinear terms in neuron models. This paper proposes a novel uniform piecewise linear segmentation approach for nonlinear function evaluations. Employing the proposed approach, we present a uniform-segmented adaptive exponential neuron model capable of accurately producing various responses exhibited by the original model and suitable for efficient large-scale implementation. In contrast to previous nonuniform-segmented neuron models, the...

Abstract
This study presents a cellular-based mapping for a special class of dynamical systems for embedding neuron models, by exploiting an efficient memristor crossbar-based circuit for its implementation. The resultant reconfigurable memristive dynamical circuit exhibits various bifurcation phenomena, and responses that are characteristic of dynamical systems. High programmability of the circuit enables it to be applied to real-time applications, learning systems, and analytically indescribable dynamical systems. Moreover, its efficient implementation platform makes it an appropriate choice for on-chip applications and prostheses. We apply this method to the Izhikevich, and FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron...

Abstract
In this research, a bi-objective optimisation model for the joint replenishment problem (JRP) of a supply chain comprised of a single supplier and multiple retailers is developed, in which the retailers are assumed to be members of a unique distribution company. The mathematical model minimises the supplier's as well as the retailers' cost subject to some constraints. The constraints are the required storage spaces for any retailer, for any product, and for all the products. The benefit of using the JRP policy is shown based on minimising total cost of supplier and retailers. Since the developed model of the problem is NP-hard, the multi-objective meta-heuristic optimisation algorithm of...
A simple and efficient method for segmentation and classification of aerial images
, Article Proceedings of the 2013 6th International Congress on Image and Signal Processing, CISP 2013 ; Volume 1 , 2013 , Pages 566-570 ; 9781479927647 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Segmentation of aerial images has been a challenging task in recent years. This paper introduces a simple and efficient method for segmentation and classification of aerial images based on a pixel-level classification. To this end, we use the Gabor texture features in HSV color space as our best experienced features for aerial images segmentation and classification. We test different classifiers including KNN, SVM and a classifier based on sparse representation. Comparison of our proposed method with a sample of segmentation pre-process based classification methods shows that our pixel-wise approach results in higher accuracy results with lower computation time

Abstract
Pore facies analysis plays an important role in the classification of reservoir rocks and reservoir simulation studies. The current study proposes a two-step approach for pore facies characterization in the carbonate reservoirs with an example from the Kangan and Dalan formations in the South Pars gas field. In the first step, pore facieswere determined based on Mercury Injection Capillary Pressure (MICP) data in corporation with the Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA) method. Each pore facies represents a specific type of pore geometry indicating the interaction between the primary rock fabric and its diagenetic overprints. In the next step, polynomial meta-models were established based...

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) as a leading cause of cancer death among women, exhibits a wide range of genetic heterogeneity in affected individuals. Satisfactory management of BC depends on early diagnosis and proper monitoring of patients’ response to therapy. In this study, we aimed to assess the relation between the expression patterns of blood-based microRNAs (miRNAs) with demographic characteristics of the patients with BC in an attempt to find novel diagnostic markers for BC with acceptable precision in clinical applications. To this end, we performed comprehensive statistical analysis of the data of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and the blood miRNome dataset (GSE31309). As a result,...

Abstract
In this paper, we report on the design and analysis of filters and lenses realized by an array of metallic posts integrated in a parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG). The design methodology of these components is inferred from the modal analysis of a spoof surface plasmonic waveguide composed of metallic posts arranged in a 1D periodic structure inside PPWG. Samples of the proposed devices are analyzed using a full-wave analysis method and their performance is assessed. We show that the mentioned structure can be used to realize all-metallic band-pass filters and lenses for mm-wave and terahertz applications

Abstract
Gain-boosted cascode amplifiers are good choices for power optimiied high-speed amplifiers. In this paper, after a comprehensive study on the pole-zero locus and time response, a generic and perfect model is developed for these amplifiers. By the help of this novel modeling method, the optimum parameters for the feedback or auxiliary amplifier are determined, in order to eliminate the well-known slow timing component in the step response and obtain the minimum achievable senling time. The required circuit conditions as well as a straightforward design procedure for realizing the results of the analytic analysis are presented, finally. © 2003 IEEE
Joint pricing and rationing in a production system with two demand classes
, Article European Journal of Industrial Engineering ; Vol. 8, issue. 6 , 2014 , p. 836-860 ; Shavandi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We consider a production system with a single product and two classes of customers. Customers are segmented into two classes: 1) loyal and 2) occasional. Each class has a different shortage cost for the system. The demand of the customer classes is assumed to be stochastic and price sensitive, and distributed as a Poisson process. The objective is to determine the inventory rationing as well as pricing policies in order to maximise the profit function of the system. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision problem and characterise the optimal policies for pricing and inventory rationing. The joint pricing and rationing threshold policy is shown to be optimal. The performance of the...
Effects of microhydrophobic porous layer on water distribution in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells
, Article Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology ; Vol. 11, Issue. 1 , 2014 ; ISSN: 1550-624X ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) at high current densities is limited to transport reactants and products. Furthermore, large amounts of water are generated and may be condensed due to the low temperature of the PEMFC. Development of a two-phase flow model is necessary in order to predict water flooding and its effects on the PEMFC performance. In this paper, a multiphase mixture model (M2) is used, accurately, to model two-phase transport in porous media of a PEMFC. The cathode side, which includes channel, gas diffusion layer (GDL), microporous layer (MPL), and catalyst layer (CL), is considered as the computational domain. A multidomain approach has been used...
Semi-supervised ensemble learning of data streams in the presence of concept drift

Abstract
Increasing access to very large and non-stationary datasets in many real problems has made the classical data mining algorithms impractical and made it necessary to design new online classification algorithms. Online learning of data streams has some important features, such as sequential access to the data, limitation on time and space complexity and the occurrence of concept drift. The infinite nature of data streams makes it hard to label all observed instances. It seems that using the semi-supervised approaches have much more compatibility with the problem. So in this paper we present a new semi-supervised ensemble learning algorithm for data streams. This algorithm uses the majority...

, Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; 2013 ; 09277757 (ISSN) ; Gu, N ; Sharif University of Technology
2013
Abstract
In this work, ferrofluids containing dextran coated magnetite nanoparticles have been synthesized via co-precipitation method. FT-IR results verified presence of dextran molecules on the particles surface. TEM results showed that mean particle size is 7.23 nm, while mean hydrodynamic size determined via PCS technique varies between 39.8 and 125.8 nm depending on the ferrofluid concentration. The maximum hydrodynamic size was obtained in mid concentrations. To the best of our knowledge, effect of concentration on mean hydrodynamic size has not been systematically studied before. VSM results confirmed the superparamagnetic behavior of the synthesized nanoparticles with saturation magnetization...
Robust detection and isolation of failures in satellite attitude sensors and gyro
, Article Robotica ; Volume 30, Issue 7 , 2012 , Pages 1157-1166 ; 02635747 (ISSN) ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2012
Abstract
Summary Reliability of a satellite attitude control system depends on accurate detection of failures in its sensors. This paper presents an observer for robust detection and isolation of a class of failures in satellite attitude sensors. The proposed observer uses measurement of a three-axis gyro together with only one attitude sensor, and generates a residual signal which is sensitive to faults and is simultaneously robust against disturbance and noise. A nonlinear model of satellite kinematics is considered for design of the observer. The structure of the observer is in the form of a delayed continuous-time differential equation ensuring its robustness properties. A realistic simulation is...
A new approach to determine reference current for shunt active power filters: According to IEEE Std.1459 definitions
, Article 2012 3rd Power Electronics and Drive Systems Technology, PEDSTC 2012, 15 February 2012 through 16 February 2012 ; February , 2012 , Pages 156-159 ; 9781467301114 (ISBN) ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Increase of nonlinear loads has led to the rise of harmonic currents, voltage distortion and imbalance in power systems. IEEE Std. 1459 proposes new definitions for electric power in sinusoidal, nonsinusoidal, balanced and unbalanced conditions which can be used for compensation of nonsinusoidal and unbalanced systems. Among different definitions, IEEE Std. 1459 proposes the new concept of effective apparent power and power factor which is more related to the real losses in a power system. In this paper, by expansion of definitions of IEEE Std. 1459, instantaneous forms of effective parameters are defined. Then, a new control strategy for a Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPFs) is defined based...

Abstract
Low structure carbon black (CBN330), conductive high structure carbon black (CBXE2B) and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were loaded into the blend of natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) at different contents up to 10 phr. Kraus plots showed that all the reinforcements interact with NR/SBR blend appropriately. However, the CBXE2B whose interfacial area is the highest showed greatest value of Kraus interaction parameter. Flory-Rhener model and effective torque value revealed that all of the reinforcements enhanced the crosslink density, among them CBXE2B showed the highest impact and MWCNT placed in the second rank. It was also shown that the cure kinetic...

Abstract
A novel substrateless power amplifier module realized by ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology is proposed in Ka-band. Up to our knowledge, this is the first time that an active device is directly integrated with an RGW structure. No substrate is used in the RF section of the implemented power amplifier and the whole structure is made by machining a piece of metal. The amplifier was made of two pieces and was easily assembled without needing a precise contact between the two sections. The cavity resonance of the amplifier is suppressed using a pining structure. The fabricated amplifier module is self-packaged and does not need any packaging. It is shown that the simulated and measured results...
