, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tamaddoni, Nima (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A large number of structures subjected to the seismic loading have been damaged or have experienced failure in different parts such as the pile structure or even in the entire structure due to unanticipated effects of the soil-pile-structure interaction. The complexity of problems regarding the soil-pile-structure interaction is an influencing factor in prediction of the behavior of structure during the earthquakes. In this study, the effect of the interaction on the dynamic response of bridges was investigated using the finite element software ABAQUS. The primary purpose of this study, as previously described, is to study the effects of the soil-structure interaction on a bridge located on a...

Design of Optimum Antennas for Wideband THz Pulses Generation Using Photoconductivity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmati, Ehsan (Author) ; Ahmadi-Boroujeni, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most common devices for terahertz (THz) wave generation and detection is a Terahertz photoconductive antenna. Impedance matching between the antenna and the photoconductive material is a primary factor to obtain high optical-THz conversion efficiency. Because of the time dependant conductivity of the photoconductive material, impedance mismatching is an obstacle for generating high power THz pulses. Moreover, the range of laser power (when using Ti:Sapphire) from the excitation source varies from a few tens of milliwatts to a few watts while the radiated THz power as compared to this laser pump power is very low (in the order of a few μW); this means a low power conversion...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hejazian, Maryam (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Suction caisson is a relatively new technology which was introduced about 30 years ago for the first time and after several investigations, was found its position in the oil industry and construction of anchorages, during previous decade. So nowadays, it is the most effective and economical choice as the mooring of offshore structures in comparison with the other foundations. Suction caisson is a hollow cylinder with an open bottom and a closed top. After placement on the seafloor, the caisson first penetrates into the soil by its self weight and then inserts into the ground by pumping water out of it. Although many researchers have attempted to understand the behavior of suction caissons...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghaderi, Sina (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Determination of soil bearing capacity has been a subject for both geotechnical engineers and designers for a long time and a variety of relationships have been proposed to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of homogeneous soils. One of the most primitive equations in bearing capacity of foundations, which was Based on prandtl's (1920) bearing capacity, with some modifications, was proposed by Terzaghi. In many lands, the soft clay layer Located in a low depth of subsurface soil profile. Either the foundation should be laid in greater depth on the stiff clay or a layer of compacted sand can be used to improve the ultimate bearing capacity. Most of the recent works, which have done so...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Khaledi, Masoud (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Investigating the behavior of piled-raft foundations is a three-dimensional problem. The shape and location of the piles in the raft as well as the complex interaction of the soil-structure in these foundations should be analyzed in a three-dimensional fashion to indicate the real behavior of this type of foundations. The soil must also be analyzed in a nonlinear state to achieve the correct bearing capacity of these foundations. In this research, a nonlinear 3D analysis was performed using FLAC3D to investigate the behavior of piled-raft foundations, and the effect of various factors such as the length, arrangement and number of the piles, the loading level and the thickness of the raft, on...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fathi Mehmandoost Sofla, Mahdi (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of designing the foundation is to transfer the load of the structure to the subsoil without creating shear failure and additional settlement in the soil. Therefore, choosing the appropriate bearing capacity is an important point that should be considered in any project. Determining the bearing capacity of foundations is one of the topics that has long been considered by researchers and geotechnical engineering designers. For this reason, its design is not considered a new issue, but the application of new methods and the development of computers, raises new perspectives on this issue that justifies new studies. Most of the recent study, which have done so far on bearing capacity,...

MBBR and MBR Reactor Configuration for Better Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology (Author) ; Borgheei, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) which are commonly understood as the combination of membrane filtration and biological treatment using activated sludge have several advantages, but membrane fouling reduces the membrane efficiency, permeability and lifetime. An alternative is replacing a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) with the activated sludge system which may reduce the effect of membrane fouling. The sludge produced in MBBRs has poor settling characteristics, therefore, their efficiency is limited by the sedimentation tank performance and they require a larger settling surface. The combination of moving bed biofilm reactors and membrane bioreactors can compensate for the drawbacks of both of...

    , Article Journal of Forecasting ; Volume 32, Issue 7 , 2013 , Pages 639-653 ; 02776693 (ISSN) Mahdi Barakchian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper is a counterfactual analysis investigating the consequences of the formation of a currency union for Canada and the USA: whether outputs increase and prices decrease if these countries form a currency union. We use a two-country cointegrated model to conduct the counterfactual analysis, where the conditional forecasts are generated based on the Gaussian assumption. To deal with structural breaks and model uncertainty, conditional forecasts are generated from different models/estimation windows and the model-averaging technique is used to combine the forecasts. We also examine the robustness of our results to parameter uncertainty using the wild bootstrap method. The results show...

    Abstract
Large-scale simulation of spiking neural networks on hardware with a remarkable resemblance to their mathematical models is a key objective of the neuromorphic discipline. This issue is, however, considerably resource-intensive due to the presence of nonlinear terms in neuron models. This paper proposes a novel uniform piecewise linear segmentation approach for nonlinear function evaluations. Employing the proposed approach, we present a uniform-segmented adaptive exponential neuron model capable of accurately producing various responses exhibited by the original model and suitable for efficient large-scale implementation. In contrast to previous nonuniform-segmented neuron models, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Jalili, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Journals and conferences in computer science are the major venue for publishing new achievement in the field. It is an expert opinion that a number of top conferences in computer science are even more important than journals. In this work we aim at studying this in terms of citation analysis. To this end, we took 100 top journals and 63 top conferences and extracted their citation graph through Scopus dataset. We then constructed the citation graph in which the nodes were the journals and conferences and the links corresponded to the citations of the papers. We used various measures to rank the nodes in the graph. The ranking methods included Prestige, PageRank, Eigenfactor, HITS and SALSA....

Design and Implementation of a VLSI Architecture for Time and Frequency Synchronization in the LTE

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golnari, Amene (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The long term evolution (LTE) standard is introduced and developed by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM systems, in spite of having many advantages such high performance in bandwidth usage, are very sensitive to inter carrier interference (ICI) as a drawback. In order to prevent ICI, the frequency offset, mainly caused by the miss-match between oscillators' frequency and also between the sampling frequency of the transmitter and the receiver, should be estimated and compensated. Frequency synchronization is a part of the tasks of a synchronizer. In this thesis, main tasks of a synchronizer are illustrated and...
